Under way. In the past two hours this vigil was held for victoria soto, the first grade teacher shot while trying to shield her first grade students from the gunman. Her family says she lost her life doing what she loved. She was 27 years old. A live report from sandy hook in a moment but first, cbs 5 reporter don knapp is at a vigil in San Franciscos dolores park. Don. Reporter ann, even though we are a continent away from what happened in newtown, connecticut, people in San Francisco in the bay area very much touched and troubled by what happened here. There was a vigil tonight one of about 16 or 17 around the bay area suggested by moveon. Org. People decided to come down and bring their own candles. They stood in the rain and talked about what happened and offered each other support and talked about the title of their get together which is vigil to end gun violence. Some people say even though we have a lot of violence in the united states, what happened this time with so many children may be the tipping point. One of those people is natalie foster. I like to believe that because its very innocent, very young children, that this will really cut through a lot of the mess in d. C. Im a brand new mom. I have a sevenweekold who ive brought out. And my heart like every parent across america is breaking right now. So when the president cried, you know, there were parents crying with him. I like to think this can be a real moment for us. Reporter we would expect people would come together to do something. We see this after all the events we follow in this country when people are shot in schools. Reporting live in San Francisco, don knapp, cbs 5. Even before we know the toll at sandy hook the shooting took its place on the roster of american mass shootings. Columbine, Virginia Tech aurora. And for every one of those incidents, there are survivors and leaders who still cope with the aftermath and news of the latest tragedy. Not again. Just sick to my stomach and just takes me back to what we felt on april 12, 1999. Its emotionally anyone that was alive during that time or especially columbine just takes us back to that horrific day that we had. It really hurts when babies die. And i really hope that this shooting is the turning point. We have the power to prevent violence. We have learned how to accept each other, live with one another. We have to get back to the basics of being human beings. This one just really, really, really hurts. I cant put into words how impossible it seems to me that this could happen again so suddenly so rapidly. Its disconcerting. Again, theres nothing controversy out there that enough information to assimilate that this is one of the things that im still upset enough about just hearing about connecticut that i havent even been able to formulate my words. Lets now go live to newtown, connecticut, and cbs reporter ines ferre. Ines, investigators are still piecing together what happened. Reporter they are still piecing together what happened. President obama will be here speaking with family members, thank First Responders and is expected to speak at a vigil tomorrow night at 7 p. M. Ines, we have heard that adam lanzas father issued a statement. Do you have details . Reporter yes. He has issued a statement. People started lining up four hours before it began. The line stretching for blocks in east oakland. Everyone came to exchange their firearms 200 cash for each working gun. Some guns off the streets, grandkids some kids cant get these guns and kill somebody. Reporter more than 100 people have been killed in oakland so far this year. While this happens all too often in oakland, its the Connecticut School massacre thats on a lot of peoples minds today. I think now they understand it a much more fundamental profound level that having a gun in your home that is not safely kept could be a gun in the street committing a crime. Reporter in oakland, anne makovec, cbs 5. In San Francisco, there was also a long line of people waiting to turn in guns. Police worked with Community Groups to get the word out about the gun buyback program. So many people responded in San Francisco that they ran out of money and they had to give out ious. One woman said the connecticut massacre prompted her to turn in her fathers guns. The recent events have really spurred something that i have been thinking about for a long time. My familys personal history was destiny was stolen by guns in their lifetime, my grandfather and my father, my mothers. And i dont want my grandchildren to go through this. This is the easiest statement that i could make was to turn in these guns. Police say they took in 300 guns in oakland and 125 in San Francisco.
