KPIX CBS Evening News With Jeff Glor April 3, 2018

Glor and this is our western edition. Were going to begin tonight on wall street, where weve gotten used to big swings up and down. Today, however, was especially severe. The dow plunged at much as 700, hitting its low for the year before recovering some and closing with a loss of 458 points or nearly 2 . Part of the blame went to new concerns of a trade war after china responded to u. S. Tariffs, but that wasnt the main issue. Heres bianna golodryga. Reporter the drop in the market was driven by a selloff of the Tech Industry giants. President trump stepped up his attacks on amazon via twitter, repeating his view that the companys Business Practices hurts the u. S. Post office. Amazon losing more than 5 of its value. Facebook, which started the tech downtown turn last month amid criticism of how it handled users data lost 2. 7 today. Collectively, shares in the five tech giants known as fang facebook, apple, amazon, netflix, and alphabet lost about 324 billion of their value in the last two weeks. Cbsmoneywatch. Com editorat large jill schlesinger. Anything that impedes their forward progress is a sell thgnal to the big investor. They dont want the risk of sitting atop of these multiyear profits to see those profits evaporate. Reporter the market also felt the effects of china slapping 3 billion in tariffs on american pork, fruit, and 120 different types of commodities. Its just a fraction of what we send into china. The fear is an escalation, whether this becomes a trade tit for tat conflict, which escalates into a trade war. Ouat would be a terrible thing for each of those economies. Glor bianna, how much concern is there right now about an escalation in these trade offers back and forth . Reporter well, there is more concern than there was last week, thats for sure. Experts say not to worry too much now. This is a tit for tat trade war that were seeing back and h,rth, but President Trump edreatened to impose 60 billion worth of tariffs over intellectual property violations against china. There is a big question over how this impacts any future negotiation with north korea where china will also possibly be at the table. Glor another thing to keep in mind. Bianna, thank you very much. Hundreds of schools were closed today in oklahoma and kentucky. Thousands of teachers walked out of classrooms to rally in state ahpitals. They are demanding higher pay and increased funding for students. Her e strikes follow a growing seend of teacher walkouts across the country. Omar villafranca is in oklahoma unty. Whose house is this . Our house. Whose house . Our house reporter an estimated 36,000 oklahoma teachers walked out of class today and marched to the state capitol, vowing to fight for better wages and more funding for their classrooms. Funding education should not be historical. Reporter 15yearold hope davis brought one of her toxtbooks for show and tell, a eld ered 12yearold history book held together by masking tape. Do you want to stay here . Df you had your choice, would f i go elsewhere . If i had a choice, i definitely would go back to texas. Reporter oklahoma teachers rank 49th in pay and havent received a raise in more than a decade. For weeks teachers threatened to walk out unless lawmakers raised their pay by 10,000. A st week the Legislature Passed a tax hike to increase teacher pay by an average of 6,100. Under the new law, new oklahoma teachers will have to work eight years to reach a 40,000 a year clary. It currently takes 20 years to reach the 40,000 a year level. I mean, weve had teachers leaving for years, and now its e tting so bad the kids want the leave too. Reporter bryan davis is a teacher in bartlesville who earns extra cash as a pitching coach and driving an uber. He earns under 42,000, so a raise will help, but he says the raise may not be enough to help starting teachers make a living. I have two daughters. I think one of them would like to be a teacher, but i told her, if you do go into education, be ready to not be in oklahoma. Reporter another rally is e anned for tomorrow morning acre at the capital, and teachers from Oklahoma City and tulsa, the states two largest districts, say theyll be here. Yoff . Glor omar, thank you. A spring snowstorm has swept from the midwest to the northeast. Big, wet flakes piled up fast, as much as eight inches in parts of new jersey and new york. That made it a slippery and slushy commute for millions. The steady snow also forced the yankees to postpone their homeowner in the bronx. Amazon was not the only target of the president s tweeting today. He went after democrats, as well, about daca. Th. Trump said daca is dead because this democrats didnt care or act. Here is Major Garrett at the white house with more on this. The democrats have really let them down. Its a shame. Now people are taking advantage of daca, and thats a shame. Reporter at the white house easter egg roll, President Trump blamed democrats for the legislative impasse over daca, even though it was his own executive action that put the program in doubt. His comments followed a weekend of tweets and remarks about the obamaera program that protects about 700,000 immigrants brought to the United States illegally as children. Mexico has got to help us at the border. And a lot of people are coming in because they want to take advantage of daca. And were going to have to really see that. Reporter but new immigrants cannot take advantage of daca. Undocumented immigrants are only eligible for protection if they were in the United States and under age 31 in june 2012. The president also tied construction of the border wall to daca. Who is going to pay for the wall . Mexico reporter even though he has largely abandoned the promise that mexico would pay for that wall. The president also tweeted that Senate Republicans should abandon the 60vote threshold and pass his immigration policies with a simple majority. But mr. Trumps proposal has attracted only 39 votes in the senate this february, well short of that simple majority. Declaring daca dead is also a full reversal from mr. Trump who said this in february 2017. Da we are going to deal with daca with heart. Its a very difficult thing for me, because, you know, i love these kids. Glor major, i also want to ask you, the kremlin said today that President Trump had invited Vladimir Putin to the white house. What do we know about that . Reporter well, the president suggested a white house summit with his phone call with Vladimir Putin on march 20. Today the white house said washington was only one possible location, suggesting not much groundwork has been laid for a fullblown summit. The kremlin cast doubt on a potential meeting, noting that both countries have recently expelled dozens of diplomats and closed consulates in an ever escalating dispute over allegations that russia used a nerve agent to poison one of its former spies who was in great britain. Jeff . Glor all right, Major Garrett at the white house. Major, thanks. Police in fort worth, texas, are shnding themselves under harsh spotlight tonight. Bystanders captured these images saturday as officers struggled to handcuff a black man they detained. A warning, these images can be disturbing. David begnaud has more on them. Whoa. Man, look at this here. Ar reporter the cell phone video appears to show a Fort Worth Police officer punching 35yearold forrest curry at least four times while trying to arrest him. A second officer is seen using his knee twice. According to a police statement, die officers were responding to a disturbance call. Curry had allegedly become combative with Fort Worth Fire Department personnel who were already on scene. Firefighters say he appeared to tointoxicated and attempted to assault them. Police say when they arrived curry fled on foot. Different cell phone angles capture what happened next. Police say it was a four and a half minute struggle and it took three officers and one supervisor to take curry into custody. Hes being held in a local jail for evading arrest, resisting arrest, and public intoxication. Jasmine crockett is currys attorney. It seems as if he suffered from a seizure and woke up potentially disoriented with what was going on. Reporter do you believe his resisting may have been a result of being disoriented because of the seizure. I dont believe that he resisted. We got word from her attorney the client bonded out of jail and shes trying to have him medically evaluated nhl the last two years, two case with strained relations between the black community and the Fort Worth Police department. Tonight the community is asking for patience saying he is doing administrative investigation into the actions of the officers over the weekend. Jeff. David, thanks. South africas Winnie Mandela died today. She was married to Nelson Mandela for 38 years and was a powerful antiapartheid voice while he was in prison. Trnnie mandela spoke to the late bob simon for 60 minutes about her own treatment under apartheid. In that atmosphere, i left. Reporter solitary confinement for 18 months. Thats a long time. Yeah. Reporter interrogations . That was really brutal. Reporter but they didnt y hek her. In fact, they helped create her. The woman eventually released from prison was no longer just we wife of Nelson Mandela. It was winnie. Nther of the movement, mother of the nation. Glor winnie and Nelson Mandela divorced in 1996. While her later life was embroiled in scandal, but she is remembered as a woman of the people. She was 81 years old. It was 50 years ago today that Martin Luther king, jr. , was assassinated in memphis. Kings three surviving children havent spoken about their enthers legacy in a dozen year, but they did with michelle reller an interview theyll youll see only here on cbs. Martin luther king iii was ten when his father died, dexter was seven, and bernice five. Its hard to forget the images and sometimes i have to catch myself, because i get emotional. Martin and i were watching television, and even to this day when i see a breaking news flash, i have p. T. S. D. So even though its been 50 years, it doesnt seem like it. For me it seems like it was yesterday. Reporter bernice, what do you remember . What i do vividly remember is the day of the funeral. So im sitting right on the corner here at ebenezer. Im in my mothers lap. And so mom said he couldnt speak to me, but a child kind of ows a dads voice. I think about my own death and i think about my own funeral. And if you look at the film, im looking around, like where is he . So i remember that to this day in this sanctuary. This was to be a peaceful march to city hall reporter 68 was a time when your fathers popularity was waning. Mom used to Say Something like, because his voice is silenced, now hes loved. Reporter what does that mean . We sort of dumb down dad to some degree. Me was a doer, not just a teamer. He talked about what could atcome, but he left us a blueprint for how that could be manifested. Ar leading the march, the reverend Martin Luther king. Dad was radical and revolutionary, and america doesnt understand that yet. Reporter i have to ask this question of you did you have to tse your father for the nation wod the world to appreciate him the way they do today . You look at the greater good in terms of the sacrifice, because if he had lived, he may not have been, im certain he would not have been as effective. Because he gave his life, he was martyred, and then you remember all of the positive things he left behind. Glor Michelle Miller with the king children. Reporter more than 100 firefighters searched 2400 feet of pipe in a maze of a sewer system that has different depths of water mooring at 15 miles per hour. They tracked him after spotting handprints on the inside of the pipe wall. What appears that he was trying to get out.
