KPIX CBS Evening News With Norah ODonnell July 16, 2019

Odonnell good evening. Its good to be with you. This is our western edition. And we begin with breaking news in washington, four democratic congresswomen of color have just spoken publicly as a group for the first time about the racist tweets aimed at them by the president of the United States. President trump continued his attacks at the white house today, again inviting these congresswomen to leave the country. And cbs news has learned that Speaker Nancy Pelosi met with her Leadership Team tonight to discuss a House Resolution denouncing the president s language. Republican leadership in congress, theyve been noticeably silent. White house correspondent weijia jiang begins tonights war of words. Its time for us to impeach this president. Reporter late this afternoon, four freshman congresswomen of color known as the squad fired back at President Trump after he tweeted over the weekend they should go back and help fix the totally broken and crimeinfested places from which they came. This is a distraction. And we should not take the bait. Reporter all four democratic lawmakers are american citizens and only ilhan omar was born outside of the u. S. She became a u. S. Citizen in 2000 after emigrating from somalia. If you are not happy here, then you can leave. As far as im concerned, if you hate our country, if you are not happy here, you can leave. Reporter the president defiantly defended himself at a made in america event this morning that was supposed to showcase u. S. Products. But his racist tweets about who should stay in america quickly got all his attention. Some people think its controversial. A lot of people love it by the way. A lot of people love it. Reporter mr. Trump also called the women antiamerican and a bunch of communists. Which Congress Women are you talking about. You can guess that one. Reporter President Trump singled omar out for her comments in february claiming aipac, the proisrael lobbying group, bought the support of her democratic colleagues. Says horrible things about israel, hates israel, hates jews. Hates jews, its very simple. He does not know how to defend his policies. So what he does is attack us personally. And that is what this is all about. Reporter republicans were slow to respond to the president s remarks, but today several did say he was out of line. The tweets are racist and xenophobic. Reporter others stood by him. Come on, of course the president is not racist but he is frustrated like so Many Americans are. Reporter Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the house would hold a vote on a resolution condemning the president s tweets, forcing g. O. P. Lawmakers to go on the record. And she accused mr. Trump of wanting to make America White again. Speaker pelosi says you want to make America White again. Is that true . Well, thats just a very racist statement, somebody that would say that. Nohitese, an weijia, havent the Republican Leaders in congress enhis . Reporter norah it is not a lack of trying. Cbs news has been pressing g. O. P. Leaders all day long including Senate Majority leader mcconnell and Kevin Mccarthy to weigh in on this escalating controversy but so far we have congressman steve scalise, the number two in the house says they will talk about it more but so far that has not happened and theres no indication when it will. All right, wgbh thank you. Weijia jiang, thank you. Odonnell weijia jiang, thank you. Also at the white house tonight is Major Garrett and he has been covering mr. Trump since he began his first president ial campaign four years ago. Major looks at the president s long history of controversial racial comments. Theyre bringing drugs, theyre bringing crime, theyre rapists. Reporter the nation has observed mr. Trump as candidate and president , judge and judge harshly based on race, religion and ethnicity. Like his call for a muslim ban. Donald j. Trump is calling for a total and complete shutdown of muslims entering the United States. Reporter he accused federal judge Gonzalo Curiel born in indiana of being biased because his parents emigrated from mexico. Im talking about common sense, okay. He is somebody, he is proud of his heritage. But you are saying it say barrier to him doing his job. Is he not treating me fairly. Reporter even before running for president , mr. Trump inflamed racial tensions questioning president obamas birth place. Why doesnt he show his birth certificate. Reporter and the president was forgiving of White Nationalists spewing anti semitism after a deadly confrontation in charlottesville. You also had people that were very fine people, on both sides. Reporter mr. Trumps willingness to invite charges of racism is now a staple of his presidency, as is the resiliency of his support, foreshadowed by his own words during the campaign. Where i could stand in the middle of fifth avenue and shoot somebody and i wouldnt lose any voters, okay it is like incredible. Odonnell and major, we saw the president today double down on those remarks that he made. Why is he doing that . Reporter well, my reporting, norah, today is consistent with the reporting i have done throughout my exposure to mr. Trump as candidate and president. He sees an advantage in being labeled a racist or being accused of having racist motives, why . It draws attention to some other issue he wants the public to scrutinize or Pay Attention to. National security, immigration, patriotism, or in this case, the so called progressive or radical left of the democratic of the party. He believes by uniting democrats now he has brought attention to what he perceives as a political vulnerability of democrats, a leftward lurch and that is why many people close to the president tell me he went down this road starting this weekend. Odonnell Major Garrett, thank you. The White Nationalist who killed a protester with his car in charlottesville, virginia received a second sentence today of life in prison. James fields received the life term plus 419 years and 480,000 in fines. He was already serving life in prison with no chance of parole on federal charges. Fields deliberately plowed into a crowd of antiracism demonstrators in august of 2017 killing 32 year old heather heyer. The president said the weekend roundups of undocumented immigrants were in his words very successful. Cbs news has repeatedly reached out to immigration and Customs Enforcement but so far ice will not tell us how many immigrants were detained. Manuel bojorquez reports on the impact all of this is having on immigrant families. The truth is, one of these days is going to be a nightmare. Reporter at the basement of this church in new jersey, volunteers met with anxious immigrant families like jose who came with his 13 year old son fernando and asked we not use their real names. Im just scared, one morning all my dreams, and all my expectations and all my freedoms just disappear. Reporter jose came to the United States from mexico 20 years ago and was given a deportation order two years ago after being pulled over for a broken tail light. Hes now a father of three u. S. Citizen children. I feel like he can get detained and my family could get separated. Reporter they are so worried they have covered up the windows at their home and even barricaded the front door. For fernando, every day feels like it could be his last with his dad. That time i feel worried in the night, that last hug i give my dad, last kiss i give him is the last time i feel i am never going to see him again. Reporter there was no sign of increased activity at this ice facility in florida today. Norah, the Trump Administration has laid out a new rule that would essentially block most Asylum Seekers from Central America and other countries, but that rule seems certain to face a court battle. Odonnell all right, manuel bojorquez, thank you. Two of Jeffrey Epsteins accusers faced him today. At a bail hearing in a new york courtroom. Epstein faces federal charges that he sexually abused underaged girls. He is hoping for home detention as he awaits trial. As mola lenghi reports, new evidence found at his new york home could complicate that. Reporter in a safe inside Jeffrey Epsteins manhattan home prosecutors say they found piles of cash and diamonds plus an expired foreign passport with epsteins picture, a fake name and residency listed as saudi arabia and discovered new photos of nude and seminude young girls. Plus Bank Accounts totaling over 500 million. All reasons the government wants epstein to remain in jail until his trial. Certainly anybody that keeps thousands of pictures of nude and seminude children in his home is somebody that i think could present a danger to the community. Reporter two of epsteins accusers, annie farm and courtney wild asked the judge not to release epstein on bail. Wild says she was 14 years old when epstein abused her in palm beach. It was a very dark time in my life. But i just hope that basically he gets what prosecuted the way he should have been. Reporter epsteins Defense Attorneys argued that if he wanted to flee, he already would have and that he has disciplined himself since his conviction in florida in 2008. At one point telling the judge its not like he is an out of control rapist, to which the judge replied how do you know that . Odonnell mola lenghi joins us now, so epstein wants to stay in his 77 million townhouse, how would that work. Reporter ultimately it will be up to the judge, norah but his legal team says that he has offered to pay for armed guards at the townhouse for surveillance cameras for g. P. S. Ankle monitor that will prevent him from fleeing according to them. Complicating this for the judge is that more women according to prosecution have come forward since epsteins arrest more than one week ago. But the judge will ultimately decide on bail. Odonnell we will likely hear from those women, thank you. Sere is a possible break tonight in the murder of an american scientist in greece. The police there have detained a 27 year old man who they say has confessed to killing suzanne eaton, a molecular biologist attending a conference on crete when she disappeared july 2. Her body was found in a world war ii bunker. At this hour protesters in san juan are demanding that puerto ricos governor step down. Ricardo rossello used profanity in his social media chat to describe a politician and federal control board. David begnaud is there with the protesters tonight, david . Reporter norah, good evening. We are in front of the Governors Mansion where people have been chanting where is ricky, ricky is not here. He is out selling what is left of the island. I say that is probably 2,000 people who have been here for the last two hours. They are loud and they are peaceful. The governor has said he is he not leaving but he did apologize for what he said in that secret chat room that he ran in one chat there was talk of violence against the mayor of san juan carmen yulin cruz, the governors chief Financial Officer wrote im dying to shoot her up. To which the governor responded you would be doing me a big favor. Tonight in washington, there are politicians who are wondering whether more oversight is needed to determine how much money puerto rico should get after Hurricane Maria and how exactly it should get it given the political crisis that is brewing here. Odonnell and david, what happens if the governor resigns . Reporter well, good question. His number two resigned this past weekend because he was caught up in the scandal. So no one really knows. Odonnell all right, David Begnaud there, thank you. Still ahead on the cbs evening news, the murder of a well known civil rights activist has left baton rouge in shock. We spoke to her brother today. Sadie robertsjoseph founded an africanamerican History Museum in her hometown. Mireya villareal spoke today with her brother. Reporter the discovery of sadie robertsjoseph dead in the trunk of her own car has left her brother Joseph Armstrong in shock. We never seen anything like this in our immediate family and it is really hard. Reporter the 75 year old local civil rights activist was last seen friday morning after baking cornbread with her sister, according to the family, around 3 45 that afternoon her car was found on a dead end street several miles from her home. They popped the trunk and there she was, in the trunk of the car. Reporter police have offered Little Information to explain what happened, an autopsy released today concluded she died of traumatic asphyxia, including suffocation. How did it happen . Reporter or why. Why did it happen, how did it happen. Was it a robbery, or was it what. Reporter robertsjoseph was widely known for charity work and activism and has been described as a treasure to the community. In 2001, she founded the local baton rouge black History Museum. In 2011, robertsjoseph spoke at an event she organized to commemorate the end of slavery. Embrace diversity, learn of our history and that is the only way we are going to be able to heal. Reporter it took more than 20 years to build this museum. It was sadies dream and now her family tells us they are not sure how they will keep it open and who will actually run it. Meanwhile police say they have been tirelessly working to find who killed her here in baton rouge. Norah . Odonnell thank you, mireya.
