And its friday, so Steve Hartman is on the road with another story of kindness and generosity, about a california chef who is serving up 300,000 meals to those in need. This is the cbs evening news with norah odonnell, reporting from the nations capital. Odonnell good evening, and thank you for joining us. Tonight, as the death toll here in the u. S. Has now passed 50,000, several states have begun lifting stayathome orders, allowing some businesses to reopen. The decision to ease restrictions comes against a recommendation of experts, and even though those states dont meet the guidelines set by the white house. But instead of focusing on those guidelines, tonight the white house finds itself trying to walk back comments from the president that his own medical advisers are warning are dangerous. Today, President Trump said he was being sarcastic when he asked an official from the department of Homeland Security on thursday if the government would test injecting disinfectants into patients with coronavirus. His comments forced the makers of clorox and lysol to ask ke dis not to take disinfectants as medicine, and the surgeon general, to warn americans to talk to their doctors before trying any new treatments. Earlier today, the president signed an extension of the relief bill, giving an additional 484 billion to Small Businesses and hospitals. Many companies had complained of being shut out when the first round of funding became available. Well, our team of correspondents is covering every angle. H re going to begin with cbs Mark Strassmann who leads us off today in atlanta. Reporter this Bowling Alley reopened and with each new player both the shoes and the balls are resanitized. Reporter but outside georgias governors mansion, ediveby protesters jeered todays reopening, and governor brian kemp. cars honking his executive order includes salons, gyms, tattoo parlors, and Bowling Alleys. The blowback was immediate. Critics said too soon, too risky. President trump criticized the decision. Im not happy about it. And im not happy about brian kemp. Reporter Health Officials noted America Today crossed the 50,000 deaths mark in this contagion. Were concerned about the infections. You know, we dont want to see a second wave of infections now. Reporter and in atlanta, 200 atlanta businesses posted they would stay shut. I think its irresponsible to open at this point. Reporter Neda Honarvar owns tough love yoga, closed since midmarch. I think putting peoples lives at risk, you cant bring people back to life but you can start a business again. Reporter its not just georgia. In dallas, texas, the North Park Mall started retail sales today, parking lot pickups only. Oklahoma and michigan also had limited reopenings today, and next monday, tennessee, minnesota, and colorado will join them. Todays protesters in wisconsin want the same. Its part of americas latest polarizing divide deciding when and how to reopen the economy. People are still a little nervous and skittish to get out. Reporter back at the salon outside atlanta, jason griggers and Nakia Lawrence both said theyre both conflicted. Everything is going to take baby steps and im happy, you know, that were doing that, and im happy to help support the salon do that. Reporter the salon was closed for five weeks. Hriggers was burning through savings. I think people are a little nervous right now, and its totally understandable. I get it. I get it. Im a citizen, too. Reporter with proper social distancing, houses of worship here can start having inperson services this weekend, and onstaurants on monday can start seating customers. But the question no one can truly answer yet is it safe . Norah. Odonnell mark, thank you. Had to wcitio notor of maryland ingest or inject disinfectants into their bodies. This came after the state received more than 100 calls to its emergency hot line asking for guidance, and to be clear that is dangerous. The warning came after President Trump suggested scientists look into disinfectants as a treatment, a way to internally cleanse the body. Cbs paula reid is at the white house. And, paula, what is the president saying tonight . Reporter norah, today the president tried to walk back his suggestion that humans could be injected with disinfectants to seght covid19, and he proposed this idea after listening to a presentation where it was mentioned that bleach is effective against the virus on hard surfaces and in the air. President trump claimed today he was just kidding when he suggested injecting disinfectant to fight coronavirus. But i was asking a sarcastic in a very sarcastic question to the reporters in the room about disinfectant on the inside. Reporter but there was no trace of sarcasm when he said this thursday night and is there a way we can do Something Like that, by injection inside or or almost a cleaning. You see it gets in the lungs and it does a tremendous number on the lungs, so it would be interesting to check that. Reporter cameras captured ri. Deborah birx appearing to wince as the president made those remarks. The makers of lysol issued a statement warning that, under ho circumstance, should our disinfectant products be administered into the human body. If people are listening to even a sarcastic remark like ntat that could potentially be actionable, again, it could lead to people being harmed or killed. Reporter the president also wondered aloud about u. V. Light, shown to kill some viruses but soso cause cancer. Suppose we hit the body with a tremendous whether it is ultraviolet or very powerful light. Reporter dr. Birx dismissed the suggestion. That is a treatment. I have not seen. Reporter but today, the president doubled down. I would like them now to look as it pertains to the human body. Reporter the president has repeatedly clashed with his medical advisers. No, i dont agree with him on that. Reporter and endorsed malaria drug, hydroxychloroquine, as a hlssible treatment. We have some very good signs. Reporter but today, the f. D. A. Warned people not to take the drug to treat covid19 outside of formal health care settings, because it could cause lifethreatening heart problems. Tonight, the president left his Task Force Briefing after just 22 minutes. That is a record. He took no questions from reporters. Norah. Odonnell and a first. All right, paula, thank you. In nw york state, the pandemics epicenter, 422 new deaths were reported today. That is the lowest daily number this month. And the total number of patients in hospitals is down nearly 25 from the peak. Those are positive signs, but cbs mola lenghi reports on what is still continuing to alarm st experts. Reporter as most new yorkers keep their social distancing, a slow but steady decline in deaths and hospitalizations is reason for hope. And yet. The number of new people coming into the hospital, number of new infections is slightly down, but thats basically a flat line, and that is troubling. Reporter in new york state, preliminary results from antibody tests found that nearly 14 , or roughly 2. 7 million people, showed evidence of past infection. Chief medical correspondent jon lapook reporter if it turns out that its higher than we even think, thats good and thats bad. On the one hand, its bad lcause that means a lot of people have been infected and probably spreading it asymptomatically and thats hard to get your arms around. On the other hand, its good because if its asymptomatic and people can recover without us knowing it, then no harm, no foul. Reporter epidemiologist maciej boni is working with rhode island on their projected hospital requirements. Tonight he has an urgent warning. Well, its important not to o impaent. Tuation. N annate many months e. Like this for rk of hu ths ofple dying christmas, and its critical that we take this very seriously for the benefit of our parents and grandparents who are the most at risk. Reporter as the Risk Management debate rages on for when to reopen businesses, a new report finds the coronavirus may be even more contagious than previously thought. Researchers in italy found evidence the disease could be carried for hundreds of feet by microscopic particles. Well, as we mentioned, there has been a lot of focus on those antibody tests with some concerns over their accuracy. And the major question if you have antibodies, to what degree are you protected against reinfection . E ose uncertainties are just some of the reasons why Health Care Officials and workers at eospitals like this are stressing, despite some improving trends, not to get complacent, norah. Reporter the recommendation to give captain Brett Crozier back his ship was made by the chief of naval operations, admiral michael gilday, who had ordered an investigation into the headspinning tale of coronavirus at sea. Gildays recommendation to reinstate crozier in effect exonerates the captain for blasting out an email warning sailors would die if the navy did not act faster to get them off the infected ship. Acting Navy Secretary thomas modly fired crozier for sending his plea for help outside the chain of command. That demonstrated extremely poor judgment in the middle of a crisis because what its done is its created a firestorm. Captain crozier applause reporter modly flew there and delivered a rant against crozier, which antagonized some s the crew. Of the crew.
