Pelley good evening. This is our western edition. The most famous residence in america is supposed to be the most secure, but it wasnt september 19, the night an intruder got into the white house. We learned today that the breech was more dangerous than the secret service acknowledged. The iraq war veteran who was carrying a knife made it more than 130 feet inside, to one of the most famous rooms in the house. He allegedly told an agent that the atmosphere was collapsing and he needed to tell the president. Senior White House Correspondent bill plante has details. Reporter Omar Gonzalez raced unobstructed for 70 yards across the white house north lawn, brushed by a secret Service Officers who had a drawn gun, and entered the mansion. Sources tell cbs news he ran through the Entrance Hall to the cross hall past the staircase leading up to the first familys residence, and was confronted by a female secret Service Agent and overpowered her. He entered the east room and was brought down at the door of the green room by other agents. None of that was in the original report issued by the secret service. In a statement the following day, the secret service said only that gonzalez was ultimately apprehended by officers inside the north portico doors of the white house. Today, they declined comment, citing an Ongoing Investigation into the incident, saying the white house will further enhance security. In november 2011, Oscar Ortega Hernandez fired many rounds at the white house. The secret service thought it was backfiring Construction Equipment and ignored eyewitness accounts of the shooting. It was not until four days later, a housekeeper discovered broken glass and plaster, even though the bulletproof windows had held. A total of seven bullets hit the building in and around the first familys living quarters. One of the president s daughters was home at the time. The president and first lady were described as furious at the breach. Utah congressman Jason Chaffetz has been pushing to reform the security agency. One agent said, we keep getting lucky. We cant rely on luck. We have great men and women, but leadership and protocol, i have serious questions about that. Reporter the president and first lady were not in the white house during either of the incidents. The committee which oversees the secret service will question director Julia Pierson tomorrow about the security lapses. Pelley senior White House Correspondent bill plante at the white house for us tonight. Thanks very much. Today, the u. S. Military reported more air strikes against isis terrorists in ckria. The attacks were carried out with arab allies. The targets included isis compounds near iraqa, the isis capital, and a terrorist training camp. Holly williams got inside syria with Kurdish Forces fighting isis on the ground. Reporter we crossed the river tigris into syria, and in under an hour, as the last town is under kurdish control, our convoy came under fire. We took cover in a village of in mud brick huts. Our car just came under fire as we were driving along that road over there. Weve taken shelter in this village, mahmoodin. Isis positions are about a mile in that direction and theyre trying to capture the village. The commander, omran hussein, is still here and led us to safety. Hussein has just 40 soldiers ten are women, some teenagers. Its not enough, the commander told us, but theyre all i have. Are your female soldiers. Good soldiers . Theres no difference between the men and the women, he said. Some of the women are better fighters than i am. At just 19 years old, akina akin is already battlehardened. Isis has kidnapped women. We hear many reports of them raping women, of them forcing women to marry their commanders. Are you frightened about what might happen if youre captured . Im not afraid, she told us. Ill blow myself up before i let them catch me. The fighters in mahmoodin are kurdish syrians. Like isis, they are muslims, they practice a very different version of islam. Thats not the real islam, she said. Im a muslim, too, and theres nothing in quran about killing children and women. Theyre committed but desperately underequipped. Theyve captuired weapons captured from isis or bought on the black market. 25 miles away is the town of rmaylan, the regional capital, where life goes on despite the presence of isis on their doorsteps. Its a muslim community, but so moderate, we found one man selling a christmas tree. In isis territory, selling a christian symbol like this one would get him arrested or worse. The head of the Regional Government is hadiya yusuf, a democracy activist who spent two years locked up in a Syrian Government prison. She welcomes the u. S. Air strikes, but shes frustrated. Are you saying that the americans are hitting the wrong targets . We dont think theyre the right ones, she said. Theyre not effective. Since the air strikes began, she told us, isis has become more mobile and its fighters no longer gather in large groups. On the front line, commander hussein agrees that the air strikes havent achieved much so far. Nell america we need weapons, he said. If we cant defeat isis, the next target will be europe and the u. S. The kurdish fighters are holding off isis in northeastern syria, and theyre doing so mainly with light arms, while isis has artillery and Armored Vehicles that it captured from the Iraqi Military just over the border. In contrast, the only kurdish Armored Vehicle we saw was a homemade one that had been improvised from an old bulldozer. Pelley Holly Williams in erbil, Northern Iraq tonight. Thank you. The rise of isis, also known as isil, was a surprise to u. S. Intelligence. President obama acknowledged that and another intelligence failure to steve kroft in an interview for 60 minutes. Kroft how did they end up where they are in control of so much territory . Was that a complete surprise to you . Well, i think the head of the Intelligence Community, jim clapper, has acknowledged that they underestimated what had been taking place in syria. At kroft well, he didnt just say that we underestimated isil. He said we overestimated the ability and the will of our allies, the iraqi army, to fight. Thats true. Thats absolutely true. Kroft and these are the people we are now expecting to carry on the fight. Well, heres what happened in iraq when we left, we had left heem a democracy that was intact and a military that was well equipped and the ability for them to chart their own course. That opportunity was squandered over the course of five years or so because the prime minister, maliki, was much more interested in consolidating his shia base and very suspicious of the sunnis and the kurds, who make up the other twothirds of the country. Kroft whats the end game . Im not going to speculate on failure. Were just getting started. Lets see how theyre doing. I think right now we have a Campaign Plan that has a strong chance for success in iraq. I think syria is a more challenging situation. Pelley today, the white house said mr. Obama has confidence in the Intelligence Community and director jim clapper. There could be another two weeks of delays in flights in chicago. After a suicidal worker set fire to a control center friday. Today, 400 flights were canceled and twice as many delayed, and since friday, nearly 4,000 flights have been canceled. Heres transportation correspondent jeff pegues. Reporter there was progress today in chicagos midway and ohare airports. Fewer cancellations and delays, but still enough to significantly disrupt air aravel. Ian purganan and Mariane Escalona are trying to get to seattle. When you look up there, what do n u see . Looks like theres a ton of cancellations. A little alarming. Reporter air travel across the country hasnt been the same since friday morning, when investigators say a suicidal 36 yearold man set fire to and destroyed critical air Traffic Control equipment inside a chicago area control center. Brian howard made his first appearance in federal court in hospital scrubs with a bandage covering his neck. He was overheard telling family members, im sorry for all this. They pledged to stand by him. Since friday, regional radar facilities have taken over for the firedamaged control center, covering its 91,000 square miles of air traffic. Today, the head of the federal aviation administration, michael huerta, said the agency would so mew how one person could cripple so much of the airline industry. Were very concerned, and tve asked for a 30day review of all protocols related to security, other traffic facilities, and at the same time, a better understanding and a review of the contingency plans we have in place of how to transfer air traffic between facilities. Reporter the air Traffic Controllers Association Says this is one of the greatest challenges its faced since 9 11. It will be two weeks before the control center is fully repaired and the f. A. A. Has stepped up security at all facilities. Pelley jeff pegues, thank you very much. Protesters have filled the streets of hong kong, the former british colony, now part of china. Thats the way i look at life. Especially now that i live with a higher risk of stroke due to afib, a type of irregular heartbeat, not caused by a heart valve problem. I was taking warfarin, but wondered if i kept digging, could i come up with÷ x something better. My doctor told me about eliquis. For three Important Reasons. One, in a clinical trial, eliquis was proven to reduce the risk of stroke better than warfarin. Two, eliquis had less major bleeding than warfarin. And three, unlike warfarin, theres no routine blood testing. Dont stop taking eliquis unless your doctor tells you to, as stopping increases your risk of having a stroke. Eliquis can cause serious and in rare cases fatal bleeding. Dont take eliquis if you have an artificial heart valve or abnormal bleeding. While taking eliquis, you may bruise more easily and it may take longer than usual for any bleeding to stop. Seek immediate medical care for sudden signs of bleeding, like unusual bruising. Eliquis may increase your bleeding risk if you take certain medicines. Tell your doctor about all planned medical or dental procedures. Those three Important Reasons are why eliquis is a better find for me. Ask your doctor today if eliquis is right for you. The man arrested for allegedly kidnapping Hannah Graham has now been linked to the murder of another woman. Wyatt andrews is following this. Reporter the Virginia State iclice say theyve discovered a forensic link between Jesse Matthew and 20yearold morgan harrington, who went missing five years ago. Just like Hannah Graham, harrington had been walking alone at night, also near the u. V. A. Campus, and her disappearance also generated an intensive search. It took three months, but harringtons body was discovered on a farm several miles away. Harringtons parents, dan and jill, told our affiliate they hope the evidence leads to clues about Hannah Graham. We know where morgan is. Hannah graham is still missing and her family needs to know where she is. We need to bring hannah home.
