Reporter what did you say . Captioning sponsored by cbs this is the cbs evening news with scott pelley. Pelley good evening. This is our western edition. The Islamic Terrorist Group known as isis said today it has executed another western captive. That would be the fourth in six weeks. Isis put out brutally graphic video purporting to show the beheading of a british aid worker, 47yearold alan henning. Of course, we will not show that to you. The terrorists are now threatening to kill another american, peter kasig, in retaliation for u. S. And allied air strikes on isis targets in iraq and syria. Holly williams has more now about the latest casualty in the war with isis. Reporter he was a british taxi driver and father of two daughters who worked with a Muslim Charity to deliver aid to syrians. And everybody watching. Reporter but that didnt matter to the isis militants who kidnapped alan henning nine months ago and have now beheaded him. His blood is on the hands of the british parliament. Reporter the latest execution follows british air strikes against isis in iraq. Hennings wife, barbara, publicly pleaded for mercy from isis, or as it also calls itself, Islamic State. We are at a loss why those leading Islamic State cannot open their hearts and minds to the truth about alans humanitarian motives for going to syria. Reporter several Muslim Leaders also called for Alan Hennings release, but to no avail. After his execution, his murderers followed their usual habit of threatening the life of another hostage, this time an american aid worker and former army ranger, peter kasig. Kasig is just 26 years old and from indianapolis. And, scott, before his capture by isis, hed set up his own aid organization, delivering food, clothing, and medical supplies to syrians. Pelley Holly Williams reporting again for us tonight from northern iraq. Holly, thank you. In addition to alan henning, isis has executed american journalists james foley and steven sotloff, and another british aid worker, david haines. So, who is that masked executioner . The new director of the f. B. I. Says he knows, and in his first Major Television interview for 60 minutes, we asked james comey about the work to hunt down the isis killer. Well, its not work i really want to talk about on a lot of dimensions, using our intelligence tools, our military tools, obviously our relationships with our partners, especially our great partners in the british services. We are working pretty hard, not just to identify and find that savage, but all of them. Pelley do you know who he is . I believe we do. Pelley do you have a name. I have it in my head. Pelley but youre not willing to share it. I am not. Pelley how do you capture him . Thats a very good question, one im probably going to stay away from speculating about. Pelley but you want him. I want to see our country and our allies bring justice to him, whether that means capturing him or killing him, i dont know at this point. Pelley i can tell by the look in your eyes that you want one or the other very much. Yeah, i want justice, and thats not just my job. Thats my passion. So i want justice in this case, and in the others where horrific things have been done to innocent people. Pelley comey also told us just how Many Americans have joined terrorist groups in syria. Well have that and more on 60 minutes sunday. This evening at the white house, the nations top Infectious Disease expert, dr. Anthony fauchi of the National Institutes of health, was asked about the chances of an Ebola Outbreak in america. I take nothing lightly, but im convinced by what we have all said today that the system thats in place with our Health Care Infrastructure would make it extraordinarily unlikely that we would have an outbreak. Pelley at the same white house briefing, the president s Homeland Security adviser, lisa monaco, said every Ebola Outbreak over the past 40 years has been stopped, and we know how to do this, and we will do it again. Removed from the apartment where the first ebola patient stayed before helps hospitalized. First, Manuel Bojorquez in dallas. Reporter this afternoon, a fullysuited hazmat crew finally entered the dallas apartment where Thomas Duncan stayed soiled sheets towels were taken. Towels, even a car that was possibly contaminated, were still there three days after his ebola diagnosis. Fire Marshal Robert de los santos. Right now, were just trying to get the soiled linens and those items out of there. Reporter today, police cars were guarding the apartment complex, but some residents have complained all of this should have been done earlier, a few days ago. Texas governor rick perry said this rest assured that our system is working as it should. Reporter yet hospital officials acknowledged a key part of their system did not work. Texas Health Presbyterian said a technical flaw allowed the sick man to be released last week, potentially putting others at ask for two additional days. The electronic records of a nurse who knew duncan had been in west africa did not link up with those of the doctor who treated him. The hospital says that has been fixed. There are also questions about why relatives who were with duncan in the apartment were not immediately quarantined, allowing them to have contact with others. Dave daigle is with the centers for Disease Control and prevention. Have you been caught off guard . We certainly have learned things. Reporter you are confident that this will not spread beyond this one gentleman or beyond his close contacts . Im confident well stop the outbreak here in dallas. Reporter this team of c. D. C. And texas contact tracers have been monitoring all those potentially exposed to duncan. Stephanie shrag is the supervisor. Are these people scared . I will say the community is going through probably one of the most difficult times in their life, and i would encourage a lot of sympathy for the community. They are scared. Reporter but officials say, so far, no one is showing symptoms. Duncan remains here in serious condition. Scott, today, the Dallas CountyDistrict Attorney said he is considering whether to file criminal charges against the patient, but has not specified what those charges might be. Pelley manuel, thanks. The Ebola Outbreak in west africa is the largest ever seen. And now, an american journalist covering that story has been infected. Hes ashoka mukpo, an nbc cameraman, who is now flying back to the United States for treatment. Nearly 7,500 cases of ebola are reported in four african nations, and with relatively primitive medical facilities, about half of those patients have died. Patients at two hospitals in the washington, d. C. , area are being tested for possible ebola. One is at Howard University hospital. After traveling from nigeria. The other is at a hospital in rockville, maryland. We asked dr. Jon lapook to show us what hospitals in this country are doing to prepare for ebola. Reporter in new york city emergency rooms, the writing is on the wall, asking patients to report flulike symptoms that could suggest ebola. In the e. R. At n. Y. U. Lagone medical center, doctors frequently test protocols designed to identify infected patients. This is the isolation room. Reporter dr. Jennifer lighter fischer is part of the opfection control team. We have secret shoppers that we have. Reporter what does that mean . People in infection protection will randomly show up at the Emergency Department, pretending that they recently traveled to west africa. The staff. The Emergency Department staff does not know that theyre a fake patient, if you will. Reporter so far, she says, the staff here has asked all the right questions. If ebola is suspected in one of these test runs, the patient is given a mask and immediately brought to the isolation room. Memberss of the Emergency Room Team are immediately notified. The triage nurse makes a phone call to the back of the Emergency Department so that physicians and Health Care Workers are aware. Reporter thats unlike the hospital in dallas, where a breakdown in electronic communication led to Thomas Eric Duncan being sent home. Dr. Fischer says, given the scope of the outbreak in west africa, she expects to see ebola patients in new york city. The trick will be, in several months from now, to keep doing those mock runs to make sure that its always on the forefront of peoples minds, because i dont think ebola is going away any time soon. Pelley jon, we heard dr. Fauchi earlier say theres not going to be an outbreak in america. How can he be so sure . Scott, its important to distinguish between an individual case of ebola and an outbreak, and i think its important to emotionally immunize americans against the nearcertainty that there will be individual cases. But given the Robust Health care system here, its very likely that it will be contained, but only if protocol is followed, something that was not done in dallas. Pelley were approaching flu season. I can imagine people will start getting symptoms and jump to the wrong conclusions. Reporter right, even without a travel history to west africa, there is still going to be panic in thinking maybe they somehow were exposed. And if there were ever a time to get the flu shot to protect you against getting the flu it wont protect you from getting ebola but getting the flu and the confusion associated with that its now. Pelley dr. Jon lapook, thank you very much. Dr. Lapook is answering questions about ebola on our facebook page. Tonight, armed guards have been r sted at synagogues throughout germany for the start of yom kippur, the jewish day of atonement. Mark phillips reports anti semitism is once again on the rise in europe, especially in germany. Reporter the tensions have been building in germany since demonstrations against last summers gaza war exposed a clear antijewish sentiment. Chants were heard that echoed from germanys darkest times. Jew, jew, cowardly pig, they say. We havent had this dimension at all before. When you imagine that in german streets, you hear people chanting, a roaring mob chanting, jews to be gassed, to be slaughtered, to be burned. Reporter Dieter Graumann is the chairman of the Central Council of jews in germany. Do you see it as well as having spiked because of the passions that were stirred up by the events in gaza . Well, its cited as a reason for that, but i dont think its a reason. Its a pretext. Its an occasion to let it out. Reporter much of the more incendiary street rhetoric has come from german muslims, many recent immigrants. But Monika Schwartz friesel of berlins Technical University has studied thousands of anti semitic emails sent to German Jewish institutions and made a disturbing discovery. We saw that more than 60 of the writers who clearly invoke antisemitic stereotypes come from the middle of society, and many of them are highly educated. Reporter the memories of jewish persecution, of the november 1938 kristallnacht when jewish institutions were destroyed, are burned into german memory. And frankfurts main synagogue, badly damaged that night, is now under armed guard. Antiisraeli protests that become antisemitic demonstrations may be taking place all across europe, but nowhere are the echoes more sinister than here in germany. This may not be 1938 but, once again, the Jewish Community here says it feels like its under siege. Are people here now living in fear . They are worried, and many many jews here ask the question, has our Jewish Population a future in germany . I havent heard that question for many, many years. Reporter now, though, the question is being asked again. Mark phillips, cbs news, frankfurt. Pelley and this program note israeli Prime MinisterBenjamin Netanyahu will be among bob schieffers guests this sunday on face the nation.
