The World Health Organization told us that more than 4,000 people have died in four west african nations, and one in the United States thomas eric duncan, wednesday, in dallas. Tonight, new documents raise still more questions about how the hospital treated duncan and why it initially sent him home. Manuel bojorquez is in dallas. Reporter medical records released by duncans family to the Associated Press reportedly show his 103degree temperature flagged with an exclamation point in the Texas Health PresbyterianRecord Keeping system. The records indicate, during his visit to the emergency room two weeks ago, he said he felt dizzy, had a headache, and abdominal pain so severe he rated them eightout of ten. And though duncan told the nurse he was from west africa, they sent him home, reportedly with antibiotics and tylenol. Saymendi lloyd spoke on behalf of duncans quarantined girlfriend. If you went to the hospital right now and your temperature was 103 degrees, no doctor would return you home. Reporter duncan returned two days later. The hospital has defended their treatment, but said today in a statement c. D. C. Regards this as a very high priority. Reporter at a congressional hearing in dallas, congressman Michael Burgess of texas peppered toby merlin from the centers for Disease Control and prevention with questions about whether hospitals are ready. What are you going to do now differently to make sure that message gets to the people on the front line, because that is the critical part that was missed . What we need to do is work with regulatory organizations to be sure that compliance with preparedness is a higher a higher priority. Reporter Texas Health Officials acknowledge delays in the quarantine of exposed family members and the decontamination of the apartment they shared with duncan. Reporter scott, you always want patient care to be perfect, but what keeps communities safe is the Public Health response to an illness like this. So there were some initial mistakes, as we heard in the piece. There was delay in cleaning out the apartment, moving people out. But after that, it was all by the book. And in fact, within 48 hours, contacts were all traced down by the c. D. C. So, yes, lessons were learned, and certainly we need to learn more lessons, and the entire nation is certainly on a heightened state of alert and you just hope it doesnt turn into panic. At a press conference, his father said his son didnt have a cold or a fever or any signs of illness. I put him to bed about 7 00. I kissed him on the forehead, gave him a big hug, gave him his nightnight. I said, ely, lets have a great day tomorrow. And he just said, i will, daddy. I will. And the next morning, he was not. He was no longer with us. Reporter during the night, ely stopped breathing. He became the first child in new jersey to die from enterovirus 68, or e. V. D68. Had you guys even heard of enterovirus . No, we had not. O, reporter doctors dont know where there have been more outbreaks this year than ever. Evd68 appears like a fast moving cold with a runny nose and cough. Usually, theres no fever. While most people recover quickly, some have experienced paralysis and muscle weakness, but its unclear if its connected to the virus. Doctors say children with asthma or other respiratory problems are at a higher risk. And the hope is that, by doing this, maybe i can do something that ely would be proud of.
