KPIX CBS Evening News With Scott Pelley October 22, 2014

Captioning sponsored by cbs this is the cbs evening news with scott pelley. Pelley good evening. This is our western edition. The Government Agency that created a lot of worry among millions of drivers yesterday followed that up by creating a lot of anger and frustration today. People trying to find out whether their vehicles have a potentially deadly airbag defect couldnt get through to the national Highway Traffic Safety Administration on the phone, and the web site wasnt much help either. 247,000 more vehicles were recalled yesterday. An Auto Safety Group estimates as many as 25 million may have the dangerous airbags. Heres jeff glor. Reporter one day after the government issued an urgent letter advising consumers to take immediate action to fix exploding airbags, there was no apparent urgency on the nations auto safety web site. A search feature for recalled cars didnt work. A separate page listing affected cars was inaccurate, including vehicles not involved, and callers to the national Highway Traffic Safety Administration were put on hold. Wil Customer Service representative will return your call within one business day. Nhtsa is not ready. This is a system which is clearly broken. Reporter massachusetts senator ed markey. These airbags are ticking time bombs, and any one of them could go off in any car at any time. Reporter the explosions from takata air bags can send shrapnel through a vehicle. That flying metal has been linked to at least four deaths and 30 injuries. Nearly half the vehicles are made by honda, but there are eight other manufacturers involved, including toyota. Toyota is telling people who own affected cars no one should sit in the passenger seat until the problem is fixed. And dealers will disable air bags until the parts required to fix them are in. Millions of cars, however, are not scheduled to be fixed at all because most recalls have been ordered in warmweather states where takata thinks high humidity makes an explosion more likely. Nhtsa treats these cars like they never leave their home or move to another part of the country. Reporter we discovered complaints of air bags exploding in multiple states outside the recall zone, including indiana, ohio, illinois and maryland. Nhtsa says theyre currently composing an updated advisory, but, scott, it wont be released until later tonight. Pelley jeff, thank you very much. We will have more information about the defective airbags and the recalls on our web site, cbsnews. Com. A u. S. Air drop in Northern Syria may have fallen into the wrong hands. Today isis fighters posted a video online showing a pallet of miapons apparently intended for kurdish fighters that missed its mark. With isis extremists controlling much of syria and iraq, that region has become the most dangerous place on earth for reporters. But our Holly Williams managed to get inside syria for a rare encounter with captured isis seghters. Reporter in the basement of a prison in Northern Syria, men accused of being isis terrorists were let in one by one. The guards holding them, a part of a Kurdish Group fighting against the islamic extremists. They dont want to be identified. One of the prisoners was clearly terrified. Why are you so frightened . Because i thought i was about to be beaten, said suleiman mohammed, who is accused of plotting to detonate a car bomb. He denies it. And so does jabar sabah habash, his alleged accomplice, who was brought in next to tell his story. But 15yearold Kareem Mufleh freely admits that he fought with isis. They captured my village and gave me a choice, he told us. S. Ither join isis or be beheaded. Isis has embarked on a reign of fear. Mufleh told us he witnessed massacres when isis seized villages in syria. I even saw them kill a woman because her Wedding Dress showed her neck and bare arms, he told us. Ty claims that isis gave him an antianxiety drug, zolam, before he went into battle. That drug makes you lose your mind, he said. If they give you a suicide belt. D tell you to blow yourself up, youll do it. Uster a power cut in the prison, he showed us his wounds. Caused, he said, by three bullets to his stomach. The group now holding mufleh captured him during a firefight nine months ago and also saved his life. The public face of isis is the masked gunmen who slaughter those who dont agree with their violent interpretation of islam, frt behind that facade is a frightened 15yearold who says he was drugged and forced to witness atrocities. Pelley heres holly now hoining us from northern iraq. Holly, isis has been beheading reporters in syria. Can you share with us how you managed to get to the prison there . Reporter well, scott, we thre escorted into syria by the Kurdish Group that runs the prison. It took several weeks of negotiation for them to allow us to meet the prisoners. Ce werent allowed to see the cells where theyre being held, but we were given complete freedom to ask them anything that we wanted. Pelley remarkable insight from Holly Williams once again. Holly, thanks very much. Today, the f. B. I. Confirmed that it helped find three teenaged girls who may have been headed to syria, and it returned them to their parents in denver. Theyd been detained in frankfurt, germany. The girls were reported missing last week. The the bureau says it is investigating the possibility that they intended to join isis. On ebola today, there is la on ebola today, we just got word that infected dallas nurse nina pham has been upgraded to good also the u. S. Imposed travel restrictions on people arriving from west africa. Now passengers from guinea, guinea, liberia, and sierra leone, to land at one of five u. S. Airports where extra screening is set up. And the c. D. C. Is now recommending Health Care Workers use protective cloacting that leaves no skin exposed, and follow a buddy system so that the clothing is used properly. Rsres dr. Jon lapook. Reporter thousands of Health Care Workers attended an ebola education session this morning in new york city. Before barbara goes in to see the patient. Reporter the feature presentation, new c. D. C. Procedures for wearing and removing protective equipment. Debbie friedland is a nurse. I think i have the knowledge. I need the practice taking off the garments. I reporter the increased measures aimed to protect workers performing aggressive measures like dialysis. Valuable lessons have been learned here in the u. S. , for example, rehydrating the patient with up to ten liters of fluid a day help prevent shock, and the e portance of having a designated nurse care for each patient. Dr. Daniel bausch has been researching ebola for 20 years and says we need to know more about what happens right after infection. We dont have a lot of Scientific Data on that, but our observation over many years is such that we dont see transmission from people in a casual way, shaking hands and exposure to sweat. Cr reporter bausch says there an a delicate balance between providing increased protection and creating confusion with whats being called an abundance of caution. Last weekend, a coast guard helicopter was sent to a cruise ship to get a blood sample from an isolated Health Care Worker with no symptoms. When we say this virus is not spread by casual contact and not spread during an incubation isriod, and then we say someone in that period is going to be isolated for 21 days, how can people interpret that . Reporter one more lesson weve just learned at emory, dialysis was performed on an ebola patient and no Health Care Workers got infected. This is important because thomas reic duncan received dialysis in the texas hospital where two nurses caught the virus, but the emory case shows dialysis can be done safely. Pelley jon, thank you very much. Oscar pistorius spent his first day in prison after being sentenced to five years for ralling his girlfriend in 2013. Here is debora patta. Pistorius could serve as little as ten months in prison, the rest under house arrest according to South African law. Pistorius has always claimed he killed his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp by accident, mistaking her for a burglar. The prosecution said he deliberately shot her four times. Reevas mother june just seemed relieved it was over. En hes going to pay something. Do you think justice has been served . Yes. Reporter in addition to only serving a possible ten months of a fiveyear jail term, Oscar Pistorius wont be condemned to the gangridden cell blocks of the maximumsecurity facility. Instead, its expected he will serve his time in a private cell in the prisons hospital section. Pelley debora patta reporting from johannesburg. Debora, thank you. Bradley stood up to the u. S. Government, pursued the story which brought down a president and shaped a generation of journalists. Bill plante reports. I just do not believe the first version of events in this city. I dont believe it. Reporter as executive editor of the Washington Post, ben bradley brought skeptatism to the papers daily reporting. People dont tell the truth. They dont tell the truth in a hundred different ways, and its bottom b. C. So easy to lie. Reporter a harvard graduate and World War Ii Navy veteran, bradley worked at the u. S. Embassy in paris and later at newsweek. There, he became friendly with a neighbor, senator john f. Kennedy. Bradley joined the post in 1965. Under his leadership, the paper published a classified government study of the war in indochina in 1971 known as the pentagon papers, a risk ratified by a Supreme Court decision. But it was the posts coverage of the watergate stanley scanl which led to president nixons resignation that made bradley a public figure. He was portrayed by Jason Robards in the movie all the president s men. I cant do the reporting for my reporter chrkz means i have to trust them. I hate trusting anybody. He had the ability to encourage people, stimulate people, but not run over them. Reporter bradley was one of the few who knew woodwards and bernsteins main source, known for years only as deep throat was actually f. B. I. Director mark felp. There was always the risk of having a story that was highrisk. It was never hostile. It was, hey, look, were on the same team. Im trying to check and make sure youve done enough. Reporter despite one major embarrassment, when the post had to retract a reporters false story about a heorrinaddicted child and return a pulitzer prize, bradleys tenure won accolades for the paper, including 19 pullitzers. Last year president obama awarded him the medal of freedom, and through it all, ben bradley had the last word in washington. It isnt all straightlaced and serious. It isnt all legislation and the brink of war. Its just a town where people get along or dont get along, and theyre dealing with interesting problems, but theyre dealing with them in the same old way. Reporter ben bradley, who said of his life, i have had a very good time. Bill plante, cbs news, washington. Pelley drivers are dozing off behind the wheel a lot more often than you may think. Approximately 115,000 crashes resulting in injuries involve Drowsy Driving, and at least 5,000 people each year are killed in crashes involving a drowsy driver. Reporter and this is another number that may go higher. Until Law Enforcement has the tools to determine who is fatigued and who is not, it will be difficult for investigators to determine the scope of this problem. Pelley jeff, thanks very much. All politics is local. President obama banters with the locals at the polls. Next. Im angela, and i quit smoking with chantix.
