KPIX CBS Evening News With Scott Pelley November 14, 2014

This is the cbs evening news with scott pelley. Pelley good evening. This is our western edition. From sea to shining sea, america is about to feel the chill. By tomorrow, arctic air will blow freezing temperatures nearly everywhere. Its already freezing in colorado. This fall, theyre blowing snow, not leaves. More record lows are forecast for the plains and the rockies tonight. Check out havre, montana, expected to hit 17 with a wind chill factor of 26. We have a team of correspondents shivering out there tonight, and well begin with adriana diaz in monver. Scott, it is almost impossible to believe that were more than five weeks away from winter. With the windchill, it felt as cold as 32 degrees here in denver early today. Thats a 101degree difference from miami. The unseasonable cold front sent the mercury down to 14 degrees early today, snapping a record set in 1916. With the capacity of 1,300 in denver, homeless shelters are starting to fill up. The citys Public Library has become a daytime refuge for people like lawrence cox who have nowhere else to go. If i dont get in the shelter, im going to go to jail or go to detox. Reporter on purpose . On purpose, yes. Reporter nearly 40 emergency beds were set up for homeless women at this Recreation Center so they could feel both safe and warm. Reporter im jamie yuccas in minneapolis where subfreezing temperatures have blanketed the state for a fourth straight day. The bitter chill is also hitting casper, wyoming. Last night, it dropped to 27 below zero, a record for november. In little rock, arkansas, they saw the earliest snowfall in more than 20 years. A small army of shovelers were hired at 10 an hour to clear out the university of minnesota football stadium in time for saturdays game. Dave mansell heads up a construction crew nearby. The frigid cold has caught his team off guard. Its pretty brutal. It wears you down really hard in the wintertime. Guys get tired. Its hard working out in the cold all day. You got to have all the gear on, and its tough. Reporter the subarctic temperatures are expected to last 11 days, a stretch seen only three times in more than 100 years. Pelley jamie yuccas at wcco for us. Thank you, jamie. Whats next . Eric fisher is the chief meteorologist at our cbs boston station, wbz. Eric, where is this headed . Reporter well, scott, the warm spots around the United States are disappearing. The cold is now into the deep south. Freeze warnings are out all the way into south texas, places like corpus christi, along the gulf coast and into georgia and the florida panhandle. When you wake up tomorrow morning, look at these temperatures well back into the 20s. It will be colder in the cities and all of the suburbs. Well do it again on saturday morning. Temperatures well back into the 20s. A deep freeze. Its not going to be a oneday event. In fact, look at the overall pattern. Big ridge in the jet stream way up across alaska. Weve seen that cold coming down across the u. S. Well, another shot is on the way this weekend. And by early next week, this one goes even deeper down into the southeast and brings extreme cold to the midwest, the northeast, temperatures running l to 35 degrees below average, and, scott, it looks like this will go all the way up until thanksgiving. Pelley notice that 36 in new orleans. Eric, thank you very much. Now, to give you an idea of how unusual this weather is, billings, montana, made it to only 12 degrees today. But it was 32 in barrow, alaska. Which is above the arctic circle. Theres breaking news tonight on that intruder who evaded the secret service and bolted into the white house last september. Nancy cordes has just gotten ahold of the department of Homeland Securitys investigation of the secret service response. Reporter the Homeland Security report found that a series of flaws enabled Omar Gonzalez to make it all the way into the white house, including an improper setting on the secret Service Radio system, which prevented some officers from learning of the intrusion. Key posts inside the white house had muted emergency Communication System receivers. Aging equipment meant some agents heard only unintelligible noise. The report says three secret Service Officers actually recognized gonzalez an hour before he jumped the fence as the man who had carried a hatchet near the white house three weeks earlier. But when gonzalez did climb over, some of the closest officers didnt see him as their views were obstructed by a construction project along the fence line. And by the fading evening light. A nearby k9 officer was in his van on a call on his personal cell phone on speaker without his radio earpiece in his ear, erd he had left his second tactical radio in his locker. One of this reports most surprising findings is that members of the Emergency Response team did not immediately follow gonzalez into the white house because they were unfamiliar with the layout. That left a female officer inside to try to take him down le her own, which she failed to do twice because of their size disparity. A couple more officers eventually came along and subdued him, but one senior lawmaker tonight is calling this, scott, a comedy of errors. Pelley and the acting secret Service Director says hes fixed these problems by now. Nancy cordes, thank you very much. Japans takata confirmed today that it is the subject of a criminal investigation in the United States over defective air bags that it made for honda cars. They have been found to explode with dangerous force in accidents, sending out shards of metal. At least five deaths have been linked to this. Takata has recalled nearly 12 million vehicles in the u. S. For defective air bags. U. S. Relations with russia seem to be getting frostier by the day, and in an unprecedented move, the Russian Military says it now plans to send strategic bombers on regular patrol in americas backyard. David martin is looking into this. Y, reporter russian bomber patrols over the caribbean would be significant, military officials say, something the russians have never done before. During the cold war, soviets flew Reconnaissance Missions there, but never bombers capable of carrying nuclear weapons. Once in 2008 and again in 2013, blackjack bombers flew to nicaragua and venezuela, but those were window dressing for visits by highlevel russian galegations. When the Russian Defense minister announced the bomber patrols earlier this week, he linked them specifically to tensions over ukraine, in effect saying, if you meddle in our backyard, well meddle in yours. U. S. Military officers say they would not pose a military threat as the bombers could be tracked as they came down through greenland and iceland and across the atlantic, leaving plenty of time to scramble jet fighters. A real attack by russian bombers would most likely come over the north pole, the shortest distance between the two countries. After the soviet union collapsed, russia stopped flying longrange bomber patrols and did not resume until 2007. Currently, they fly about ten patrols a year off the u. S. Coast. Once coming within 50 miles of california. U. S. Jets routinely intercept them. Theres no law against it, as long as the bombers dont enter u. S. Air space. With president obama and Russias Putin attending the same summit in australia this weekend, these new patrols are an inyourface way of saying, were a global power and were not going to let you push us around. Pelley david martin at the pentagon, thanks. Today, a man believed to be the leader of the terrorist group known as isis or Islamic State told followers to explode volcanoes of jihad everywhere. Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi was heard on audio only, but his Statement Today seems to have put one mystery to rest. Clarissa ward is in our london newsroom tonight. Clarissa . Reporter good evening, scott. Well, this is al baghdadis first message since the u. S. Led strikes against militants in iraq and syria began, a campaign that he calls a failure, but beyond the expected rhetoric and bluster, the main purpose of this 17minute audio message appears to be to put to bed any rumors that baghdadi was injured in Coalition Air strikes last friday. He makes specific mention of president obama calling for 1,500 new u. S. Troops to go to iraq, an announcement the president also made last friday, so if this recording is authentic, it would appear that he is indeed still alive. Pelley and u. S. Intelligence still working to authenticate the tape. Clarissa, thanks very much. It turns out yesterdays historic landing on a comet was a combination of engineering genius and plain dumb luck. Today, we learned that the european spacecraft bounced high off the comet out of control and then fell back down landing on its feet. But not exactly where they wanted it. Charlie dagata is at mission fntrol in germany. Reporter these are the first pictures ever taken from the surface of a comet. Philae snapped the 360degree view from its stark and jagged new home. But imaging expert jean pierre hebring said philae missed its target landing and is now resting in the shadow of a cliff. We sort of get close to the place where we are, where we think we are, which is not very close to the one we wanted to, but not very far away. Reporter after a tenyear chase around the solar system, philae landed on the comet wednesday in a cosmic first. But the lander didnt stick to the surface. Project manager Stephan Ulamec told us philae bounced off twice. The first bounce was a huge leap, and then there was a second smaller one for about six minutes. Reporter so the first one was two hours . It was. It was. Reporter the comets weak gravity meant the 220pound lander, about the size of a dishwasher, drifted off into space, floating about a mile above the comet. Amazingly, it settled back only about a mile from its intended target. Philae was meant to be secured by two harpoons fired into the icy surface of the comet, but they didnt work. Are you still considering firing the harpoons . I wouldnt dare to do it the next time because the harpoons could trigger so much inertia that we may even push away. If it worked perfectly, good, but this needs some more thought. Reporter and there is another concern, scott. It relies on solar panels to recharge its instrument, but because it came to rest in the shadow of a cliff, its not getting enough sunlight to do that, and its unclear how long it can survive. Pelley Charlie Dagata reporting from germany. Charlie, thank you. Today, a grand jury investigating the Police Shooting of Michael Brown in ferguson missouri heard forensic evidence that shows the unarmed teen had his hands up when he pas shot last august. The pathologist found seven bullet wounds. Officer Darren Wilson has told investigators he felt threatened while struggling with brown inside his police car where the first shot was fired.
