Reporter researchers collected details of how 192 coastal countries got rid of their trash, and calculated that eight million tons of plastic ends up in the ocean each year. Coauthor of the study Jenna Jambeck<\/a> showed how much that is. Five bags like this, filled with plastic for every foot of coastline in the world. Reporter this plastic ends up not just floating on the top of the ocean. It goes all the way down to the bottom. Some of it tends to sink and some of it tends to float and were not even sure what happens to the fragments when they get below a certain size. Reporter they found 20 countries are responsible for 80 of the plastic going into the ocean annually. China is worst with about 2. 4 million tons. The United States<\/a> is number 20 with 750,000 pounds. Weve heard these stories of the plastic garbage patches that are floating out in the pacific but that is just a small amount. Thats sort of the tip of the iceberg. Theres a lot more. Reporter captain Charles Moore<\/a> has been tracking whats known as the pacific garbage patch aboard his Research Boat<\/a> alguita. His latest discovery is a collection of ropes, floats, and trash that has created an artificial island. Theres cups like this. Theres lids of trash cans like this. In the middle of the pacific we discovered this summer we were there for a month and its beyond my wildest fears how bad its gotten out there.
