History was made this morning at the vatican as two former popes were proclaimed saints by pope francis. Correspondent alan tizzy is there. Reporter hundreds of thousands of people fill st. Peters square and the surrounding areas. Many of them having stood in line for more than 12 hours to secure their place at an unprecedented event, the canonization of two popes while a third pope watched over by a fourth. It took pope francis only a new minutes to declare that popes john xxiii and john paul ii announced saints in heaven who should be venerated. He said none of the 20th century lived through time ultous events but not being overwhelmed by them. Its not without controversy. Many criticize the fact that john paul ii was put on a fast track being made a st. Nine years after his death and there are those who say he didnt do enough to curb and deal with the Church Sex Abuse scandal and, therefore, has no right to be a saint. That didnt bother anyone in the crowd however, most of whom said they had come for what they were sure would be the blessings that would now fall upon them from heaven from these two saints nearly from the fact they were here with them when they were declareds. For saints. For sunday morning,. Secretary state kerry is calling on an Observation Team thats been detained in ukraine. They charging theyre nato spies. And april may be ending but spring showers are not. Scattered rain is predicted across the nation in the week ahead. Osgood next back from the dead . And later hit,,,,,,,, osgood bringing the dead back to life has been a dream of humankind since the beginning of time. But could bravado ever become reality . Our cover story is reported by tracy smith. Reporter youve always been an optmist . Yes. Reporter joe tiralosi of brooklyn, new york, says life is good, especially now. Five years ago, tiralosi, then 56 and in good health, was at work as a driver in new york city one hot august day when he felt sick, really sick. I just suddenly didnt feel like myself. I didnt know what it was, so i called home, and i spoke to my wife and i told her, i says, i dont feel good. I think i want to just come home. And thats when she said to me, why dont you just go to the hospital . Reporter he walked into new york presbyterian on his own power and promptly dropped dead. It was like they shut the lights out, and i just collapsed and fell on the floor. My heart stopped. And the nurse was i heard screaming, and that was it. Reporter but that wasnt it. Tiralosi was brought back from the dead. He says it was divine intervention, a testament to the perseverance of his medical team and the power of some bonechilling cold. Do you see any moving . Reporter consider this scene from the 1997 blockbuster titanic, the big ship has gone down, and the icy water has apparently taken its toll on the 1,500 victims. Is anyone alive out there . Reporter as it turns out, there might have been. While the reality is we know that today if those people had been found, many of them could potentially have been saved, because by virtue of dying in icecold water, their brain and their cells would have been preserved. People who have died could have been saved if they had died today and if and i say t is with a capital i if care had been provide for them. Reporter dr. Sam parnia runs the Resuscitation Research program at Stony Brook University medical school and writes that death isnt a moment but a process that can be interrupted and often reversed with the help of new techniques. In the century since the titanic, for instance, weve learned a few things about cold water. Rescuers work frantically to find 2 1 2yearold michele funk. Reporter in 1986 michele funk drowned in an icy stream in utah. The little girl was submerged for more than an hour and technically dead, but the cold water chilled her down to 66 degrees, enough to stave off brain damage. Little michele woke up and, as Susan Spencer reported, went on with her life. Michele remembers nothing of that awful day. Her doctors will never forget it. Reporter today, cooling devices like this do much the same thing as that icy stream. They chill people whose hearts have stopped and preserve their brains until doctors can figure out how to get their hearts going again. So cooling somebodys body down buys doctors time to fix whatever else is going on and bring them back to life . Absolutely. Cooling buys us time so, for example, if somebody were to suddenly collapse and die at home, what we could do is go in the freezer and take out our frozen peas, frozen vegetables, put them on the body and try to do cpr at the same time so we can slow down the rate by which theyre getting brain damaged. Reporter hold on a second. Are you saying that seriously . That if somebody were to collapse, you could take your frozen developtables out of the freezer, ice them and do cpr and it would help . Absolutely, absolutely. Reporter but despite what weve learned, the chances of being brought back are from the dead are still small. Last year in the u. S. , over 24 of those who had a cardiac arrest in a hospital survived the experience. Outside a hospital, the survival rate was less than 10 . One of the reasons, parnia says, is that emergency workers sometimes quit cpr too soon. Its harder when youre tough work out in the gym so you have to do this and you have to do it very actively. And if you do this for a while, it gets very, very tiring. People get out of breath. So imagine trying do it for an hour. Reporter Compression Machines like this one can carry on for an extended time, because longer and often better. A lot of doctors will stop compressions after about 20 minutes, but we know from research that if you go on for 40 minutes to an hour, your chance of bringing people back to life is much, much higher. Reporter in joe tiralosis case, it was all by hand. Do you have any idea how many different people gave you compressions that day . I dont know the number. Its dozens, dozens, many, many people. Reporter all taking turns. All taking turns. Reporter and so after about 4,500 chest compressions and nearly an hour in the cooling suit, joe tiralosis doctors brought him back, cold, fragile, but alive. What did they give you that day . I heard there was quite a concoction of certain medications. Reporter but i mean bigger than that, whatd they give you . Well, saved my life. They gave me the chance to live again. Sometimes people tell me being back, whats the best day that you could remember . And honestly, every day is the best day to remember. Because reporter there is a chance, of course no way to measure what it all means to joes wife, janet, son joey or daughter christina. Hes here every day. Were so grateful. Im so happy. Thank you. Youre welcome. Reporter life is even sweeter, it seems, when you thought death fought death and won. Osgood ahead a small town thinks big picture. When the dust settles and we have time to mourn, well never secondguess, did we do the right thing . Oh the name your price tool you tell them how much you want to pay, and they help you find a policy that fits your budget. I told you to wear something comfortable this is a polyester blend whoa uh. Little help . I got you unh its so beautiful man should we Call Security . No, this is just getting good. The name your price tool, still only from progressive. vo oh. My. Tongue. Finally. announcer allnew friskies saucesations. A taste experience like no other. In cheesy, creamy, homestyle, or garden sauce. Friskies. Feed the senses. Osgood we cant know for sure when the end will come, but at least we can be prepared. Dean reynolds takes us to a town putting those words into practice. Reporter la crosse, wisconsin, is a lively, Mississippi River town that talks a lot about death. How many of you have signed advanced directives . And how many of you are working on them . We came to lacrosse because at last count, 96 of the people who passed away here had created advanced directives. Thats the highest percentage of endoflife planning in a nation where only about 30 of all adults have such a document. It made sense to me because i want to have my family know my last wishes and exactly what they need to do and not have to worry about agonizing over that decision if something happens. Reporter an vas advanced directive is a statement of patient preferences that tells everyone else, this is what i do and do not want to keep me going. And perhaps most important, who will speak for me when i cant. The plan covers all sorts of scenarios and situations. It also gets down, as i understand, specifically to who you want in the room . Yeah. It can. Yep. And who you dont want in the room. laughter none of the people at this table. laughter reporter bud hamis is a medical eththist with the Gundersen Health system here who started the program called respecting choices 20 years ago after seeing first hand what death was like without it. I found a situation where the young doctors in particular were expressing to me their distress about having to treat patients who were critically ill, many of them quite erlderly and not knowing whether it was what the patient would or would not want. Perhaps, the saddest thing i witnessed was to see families ripped apart by this disagreement. Reporter so theres irreconcilable differences. Yes, because i mean, you murdered mom. Reporter right. Kind of feelings. Reporter one key point for hamis as he spreads the word to other states and countries is that patients at the end of their lives often choose to forgo efforts to extend them at all costs. That, he says, translates into shorter, less expensive stays in the hospital. There arent any right or wrong answers. Its whatever is best for you. Reporter this is a nurse facilitator speaking to gloria reed about her recently diagnosed lung cancer. And glorias wishes going forward. So which one of chose choices do you think fits your wishes the best . I guess maybe stop all efforts to keep me alive. I guess its how i live my life means more to me than how long i live. Reporter in the hospitals Critical Care unit, bob stanton was unconscious and near death from a heart attack. His family was at his side, u of many things he made clear in the directive he had completed just days before. Joline is bobs daughter. We had talked with him about how long he wanted life support, who he wanted in the room with him, what kind of medications he would receive. So that was very detailed. It was pretty much black and white. Reporter and how important is it to you that this was all sort of buttoned up and done and theres no argument about it now . Very important. Reporter Gloria Stanton is bobs wife of 56 years. So you were on board as he was doing this. Definitely. Reporter why do you think la crosse is doing this the right way . Is it just because they got the word out to you this way . I think its popular. Thats the word to use in la crosse because weve had good education. When the dust settles and we have time to mourn, well never secondguess, did we do the right thing . Reporter because you know what the right thing is to do. We do. Reporter bob stanton died shortly after our visit. The ultimate content of this conversation, i think, isnt about death. I think the ultimate topic thats being discussed is how people care for each other. And so what comes out at the end of the conversation is i love you and i now know how to take good care of you. Osgood next, a sunday morning dip in the dead sea. How do they pack so much juiciness into these starburst minis . They built a factory in miniminneapolis. But shes still gonna give me a heart attack. Thats health in numbers. Unitedhealthcare. Osgood its one of the most mystical and fascinating spots on earth. With clarissa ward, were off to the dead sea. Ireporter it was the ancient romans who named this place the dead sea, a majestic body of deep blue water framed by remote desert cliffs. So salty that no fish or plants live in its mineralrich waters. Some 1,300 feet below sea level, it is the lowest surface on earth. Basically, you see the layers. Reporter you see it, literally, the layers. Yep. Reporter thousands in here. Yep. Reporter jackie benda cane is with the dead sea search and rescue team. He knows every inch of this place and showed us some of its many treasures. Another thing that youre going to see that is unique to the dead sea is salt diamonds. Reporter right. Salt diamonds are basically diamonds from salt that are created in the deep mud. They need mud. They need soil pressure just like diamonds. Reporter if you dont like diamonds, there are also salt cruels, rounded by the gentle waves of the sea. You can actually find like perfectly reporter yeah. Pearls. Reporter even the mud is precious. It is said to provide relief from skin ailments and arthritis. Its rejuv its rejuvenating qualities have spawned a wide range of beauty products. Slathering yourselves in dead sea mud is considered by many to be the ultimate spa treatment. But the water itself is perhaps the biggest attraction. The dead sea is about eight times saltier than the ocean, so the water is incredibly dense and that makes it the easiest place in the world to stay afloat. Bobbing on the water, breathing in the low altitude oxygenrich air, one quickly relaxes. And this is also part of the healing of the dead sea. It calms you down. Reporter so its a place for reflection as well. Yes, yes, yes. We say that if you bring all the worries of the world and put them in the dead sea for a week, might be different. Reporter but the dead sea is dying, disappearing at a rate of one yard every year. Across the landscape a series of ruins from notsoancient history illustrates just how dramatic that retreat has been. Bromberg is the director of friends of the earth middle east. Well, this was the place to be on the shores of the dead sea, particularly in the mid1950s where people would be drinking coffee, literally facing the dead sea in front of them. Youd walk down the stairs and at the bottom of the stairs, the dead sea was right there. Reporter wait, so the water came right up to these stairs . Right up to the stairs. Eporter traditionally, the dead sea has been sustained by the waters of the river jordan, where the bible says the israelites crossed into the Promised Land and where jesus christ was baptized but in recent years those waters have been diverted to jordan, syria and israel for irrigation. Next to nothing today flows down that river. And in the very south, industry in israel and in jordan have turned the dead sea into an industrial quagmire extracting the unique minerals of the dead sea but in the process drying up that dead sea. Reporter massive sinkholes now pock mark the landscape turning large parts of the coast into dangerzones. The disappearing water is also a threat to the rich ecosystem that has thrived on the edge of the dead sea for millennia. Rare species like the jordan rivers st. Peter fish live in fresh water pools. As the dead sea disappears, that sweetwater getting sucked away with it. Greenberg works at the nature reserve. What were doing is were moving all the different fish here and all the different species here in the water to make wider pools at the south of the part of the reserve hoping we wont have to move them again.
