Mason it used to be when a sign at the mall Read Everything must go, it meant a store was going out of business. These days it could mean the entire mall is shutting down. Our cover story is reported by mark strassmann. Reporter these are the ruins of a dying culture the american shopping mall. This is a working fountain, isnt it . Yeah. It definitely was. I remember woolworth being here, and then they got that skating place in. Reporter audrey callagary grew up outside of toledo. The mall was always place to go. Reporter like many of her generation, she spent much of her teenage years hanging out at the mall. It was always busy. You couldnt even get parking spots a lot here. Most of my paycheck in my High School Years went to jcpenney. Reporter audrey wasnt alone. Everyone wanted to go to the mall. We want to shop now. Reporter for half a century, the mall was the mecca of our booming consumer society. Yeah, lots of space in this mall. Reporter fact celebrated in many a popular movie. This place has got everything. Reporter americas love affair with shopping malls began in 1956 when the nations first fully enclosed mall, southdale, opened its doors outside minneapolis. This was the most exciting period in the u. S. Economy. Actually, the most explosive growth anywhere on earth at any time during history, early 50s through the 70s. Reporter robin lewis is the author of the new rules of retail. In the mid50s Dwight Eisenhower signed the interstate highway act. These new highways will have farreaching Economic Impact on the entire nation. They constructed 54,000 miles of interstate highway. What that did immediately is it provided mobility so they began the move into the suburbs and cities. But also what it afforded was the ability to construct these regional malls, and that just exploded across the country. Reporter between 1956 and 2005, about 1,500 malls were built, including the mall of america in minnesota, one of the worlds biggest, 4. 2 million square feet, 520 stores, an Amusement Park and even a wedding chapel. It was a golden age of shopping, which lasted until a new golden age came along. [fax machine noise] courtesy of the internet. All of a sudden, the consumer now has every single retail store throughout the world a key tab away. Reporter today malls across the u. S. Are dying. No new enclosed mall has been built since 20 of, and lewis predicts fully half of all of our malls will close in the next ten years. Why would you get in your car and drive to the mall when you can reach in your pocket . Thats the point. Reporter but if the mall is dead, how do you explain this . On the other skirts of atlanta, we found one formerly dying mall that is thriving. Where some saw financial ruin, jose lagaspe saw opportunity. The color, the item, thats what brings people from fair into this area. Reporter in 2005, he took over a struggling generic mall and transformed it into plaza fiesta, designed specifically to meet the needs of an exploding hispanic population. We followed the denigration because its nothing more than a numbers game, i will tell you. You have to have enough number of consumers to be able to support Something Like this or any kind of mall. Reporter lagaspe has turned dead space into successful hispanic malls in several cities with large immigrant communities. Looking to expand, he discovered the hispanic population around atlanta had nearly quadrupled between 1990 and 2000, but one thing was missing. Part of the culture of the Hispanic Community is one of family. There was not place where the families could gather, and shopping doesnt just mean shoes and clothing or eating at a restaurant, but its also a place where they can listen to music, sit down, relax and spend some time with their family. Reporter plaza fiesta has 280 distorts, but there is also a Doctors Office and a dentist, hairdressers, moneywiring service, everything you might find in a mexican village. Theres even a bus station to bring customers in. The mall had more than 4 million visitors last year. Its more than onestop shopping. Its a onestop experience. Its a onestop experience. Reporter the strategy here, paying attention to a changing america, and giving customers something they cant get on their computeer, may also be the key to reinvention at other malls in other places. If some of these malls are going to have a second life, what are the keys . Experience, entertainment. Youre dragging them away from their smartphone and shopping at the internet. You got give them a reason to spend the time to go and make the effort to go there. And the only way theyre going to do that is if there is a fun thing going on. Reporter and an experience you cant get. You cant get online. Exactly. You cant get online. Exactly. Mason next, were talking real money. Facefriendly for beach, pool and sunny days. Perfect, no matter what youre wearing. Its so on. Coppertone clearlysheer. Its on. Sometimes the Little Things last the longest. Give extra. Get extra. What does an apron have to do with Car Insurance . An apron is hard work. An apron is pride in what you do. An apron is not quitting until youve made something a little better. What does an apron have to do with Car Insurance . For us, everything. Mason a lot of thought goes into the design and the color of money, but is it art . Here are two sides of the story beginning with rita braver. Reporter these days american money is all about our celebrated statesmen, but once upon a time, our currency was more adventuresome, featuring native americans, the pilgrims, martha washington, lewis and clark, and back at the end of the 19th century, there was this inventive line of bills, known as the education series. The name of this particular design is actually electricity presenting light to the world. Hes literally holding a lightbulb. Reporter we can understand why United States treasurer, rosie rios, whose signature youll find in your wallet today, looks back longingly at the money of yesterday. To tell you the truth, this looks a lot more exciting than our current currency. Absolutely. I agree. This is absolutely my favorite. Reporter you have cherishes. You have partially clothed women there. In 1929, we got the dollar we know today, and the look hasnt changed much. But see what the rest of the world is spending, colorful and creative bills, west bank notes graced with birds and beaks, even sports themes. The bank note could be the calling card for what that country represents in the international market, so youre trying capture the culture of that particular country. Reporter alan newman is the director of design at a british firm thats designed paper money for more than 150 countries. There is the twotime bank note of the year winner, the kazakhstan bill. And the new libyan bill, created after the fall of dictator mommar qaddafi. So on the front is an image of a crowd scene here. On the back really depicts the 17 doves above the new libyan flag. Reporter as for who appears on the most currently worldwide, for decades its been queen elizabeth, what with the reach of the british commonwealth. In the u. S. A. , the bureau of engraving and printing produces 1. 3 billion worth of currency a day. We make money 24 hours a day. Reporter and director larry felix says the current focus is on using technology to thwart counterfeiters, as in the new 100 bill. In this blue ribbon, it contains hundreds of thousands of microlenses. When you tilt the note left and right, the images actually move up and down. And when you tilt the note up and down, the images move left and right. Reporter but weve still got ben franklin. Welcome on board the International Space station. Reporter . Dan not only put an astronaut on its 5, but also views from space. I just want to tell you how proud i am. Reporter but we americans can only dream of what could be. A few years back, when a web site put out a call for designs to update the dollar, suggestions poured in. How about the statue of liberty, amaila earhart, marilyn monroe. But Officials Say changing the images on u. S. Bills would become a political quagmire. In our country its all about dead statesmen and old buildings. Well, that is one thing that people do rely on when they look at u. S. Currency is that familiarity, and so when you go overseas, they may not know who this image is, but they know theyre going to look for it on the 100 note every time. Reporter so you can bet your Bottom Dollar that our money will keep its iconic look. [music to National Anthem playing] i had no idea where it would go when i started cutting up the first bill. Reporter Collage Artist mark wagner first cut up a dollar bill 15 years ago. I had no sort of personal interest in economics. Reporter but he couldnt stop making things out of money. His collages are assembled almost entirely from 1 bills. He calls this one the money lisa. By doing what you do, we show off all sorts of parts of dollars that we never notice. Thats one of the ideas. People are so familiar with this object. They have it in their hands on daily basis, and no one is aware what it looks look. Reporter his work asks us to reconsider this piece of paper we value so much. Its against the law to destroy a bill. Reporter his epic piece liberty is made up of more than 82,000 bill fragments. It took almost an entire year. Reporter not all his ideas are ambitious. Is this standard or did you have those made . I had those made. My brother david is a woodworker. Reporter titled a very expensive push broom, its bristles are 88 dollar bills. You give new meaning to how far you can make a dollar bill go. Thank you. I intended that. Reporter the 42yearold artist works out of his home in lancaster, pennsylvania, where he lives with his wife amy and their twoyearold son henry. Wagner is a magician with an exacto life and glue. Its almost like you did an autopsy on the dollar bill to see all the artistic pieces in it. We call itdy section when were breaking up the bill. Reporter he harvests every scrap of the bank note, meticulously sorting the pieces. This is the light chunks box. Reporter the light chunks. Reporter it includes a section for the signatures of the treasury secretaries. George washington also has a home. If i want an image of someone doing something, its always george washington. He stands in for everyone. Reporter in wagners world, washington becomer man and all the faces in the crowd. He makes other famous faces, abe lincoln, ben franklin, ben bernanke. This was commissioned by time. That was commissioned by time for their man of the year cover. They ended up rejecting it and it sold to the smithsonian. Reporter sold to the smithsonian . Yeah, to the National Portrait gallery. Theyre always moving between drawing elements and more painterly effects. Reporter at new yorks pavel zubak gallery, wagners collages can fetch tens of thousands of dollars. His shows usually sell out immediately. Reporter how many pieces of his do you have . Probably a dozen. Frank williams is a collector. I keep finding things i like to bring home that i like to look at longer than i can when i see them in a gallery. Reporter is it expensive to work with money . You cut up a lot of bills. Its no. I let people think its expensive when theyre looking at the bills. The bills arent the expensive part of the operation. Its the time. Reporter the very act of cutting up money raises the question of what its worth. Mark wagners art is a conversation about the nature of money and american identity. Im not making posters. Im not making protest signs. Art happens in two places. Art happens, you know, in my brain when im making these things and in the viewers brain when theyre looking at them. You know, i am interested in what everyone brings to the table. Reporter coming up,es table. Reporter coming up,es somethings fishy. As this dye reveals. Lysol toilet bowl cleaner does more. It removes the tough stains that bleach doesnt and it also disinfects. Thats healthing. Coffeintroducing nespresso vertuoline. Now coffee becomes an experience like nothing youve ever had before. Nespresso vertuoline. Experience the revolution of coffee. Wella, wella, wella, uh tell me more, tell me more. Twizzlerize your summer fun with twizzlers. The twist you cant resist. Mace somethings fishy at a busy tokyo market, much to the delight of restaurant patrons all over town. Seth doane now with a very pricy fish story. Reporter its the fish, the knife and a little rice. Theres not much else. Eating fish is kind of part of life. Reporter part of life . Yeah. Reporter at
