The multieffort search is focusing on the sea, and theres reports of possible debris spotted, but nothing confirmed. The plane left indonesia sunday morning for singapore, less than an hour into the flight, they vanished and all contact was lost. It is the second flight to disappear over Southeast Asian waters this year. Elizabeth palmer has coverage from london. Liz, good morning. Reporter good morning. Its been more than 36 hours since that air asia flight vanished, and investigators do not know what happened to it. Family members clung to hope as long as they could needing to believe that no news was good news but search aircraft reported debris in the area where the plane disappeared, and the head of indonesia search and rescue says his working hypothesis is that the plane is at the bottom of the sea. Air asia flight 8501 took off from indonesias second largest city, surbaya, for singapore. Over the sea, the pilot asked control to climb from 32,000 to 38,000 feet to avoid storm clouds. Minutes later, sometime between 6 17 and 6 24 with no distress call the air bus 320 disappeared from radar. The pilot had 20,000 hours of flying experience. On board were six more crew including a french copilot and 155 passengers most from indonesia, but there were also three south koreans, a malation and a britain, 16 and a 2yearold are among the missing. Tony hernandez is the ceo of the budget air airline. Until we have a full investigation of what went wrong, we cant speculate. We dont want to speculate until we find the aircraft, know what went wrong look into it and see if we need to improve anything, but its speculation at the moment. Some of the boats are, in fact warships, military vessels. They are looking east of indonesia, and they report now that the weather and the visibility are good for the search to continue. The missing plane was a relatively new air bus 320 delivered and put in service in late 2008. The jet is typically used for shorter flights like the two hour trip it was supposed to complete on sunday. At the moment the flight vanished from radar, it was at cruising altitude the safest part of the flight passing through heavily traveled air space. Data shows several planes in the same area before the air asia flight disappeared. There are a number of things that could have happened to this aircraft. Theyll be interviews from the pilots in the area at the time and talking to the air traffic controllers. The jet, an air bus 320, logged 23,000 hours of flight time over 13,600 flights. According to a boeing safety study in august 8320s have the lowest accident rates in the industry, and air asia is widely considered to have a good safety record. The incident has drawn similarities to malation Airline Flight 370 which investigators say disappeared over the southern indian ocean in march with 239 people on board. You think about the Southeast Asia dealing with three Airline Disasters in the past year. What do you think happened here . No id sigh this is incredibly unprecedented to see three aircraft losses coming from the same part of the world. But i think in this case its a very different situation, and investigators will look closely at the flight track, last communication, and target the debris field and recorders. What about the issue of Severe Weather . Could that have caused a plane of this size to come down . Typically we dont see large commercial aircraft taken down by Severe Weather. It is a factor when you talk about smaller aircrafts in thunderstorms, inflight breakups, but we dont see that with commercial large transport category aircrafts. There is discussion of Ice Accumulation that interviews with the air speed indicators chance which is what happened to air france in 2009. Based on what we know about what the pilot said and the area they were in seem like a theory here . Sure. I think investigators will look at every theory and air france showed us there could be a malfunction as far as tubes icing over and not giving Reliable Communications back into the cockpit, but one of the challenges here is not just the equipment, but its how the pilots in the aircraft are responding to any equipment failures or anomalies. Theyll look at that quickly. You mentioned that and the sad reality is we had a profile of aviation disasters and heard distress signals. Do we know in this case if they could send an alert that something wrong was happening . So far the information we have from the authorities on the ground is they asked for clearance to a higher altitude. There was not any distress signal that was sent thats been reported at this point. I will tell you, for pilots they have responsibilities, and they are aifuate, navigate and communicate, and communication in emergencies is really the last thing they are foe e kusing on. They have to handle the airplane and make sure that that is their first priority, and so its not necessarily a surprise if youre in an emergency that they are not theirnarrating play by play air traffic. I have a question how does a flight just disappear from a radar . How does that happen . What changes is the Airline Industry making to transmit data . One of the biggest issues today is after the disappearance of mh 370 is why we dont have beater tracking of aircraft in dead spaces.
