Force president obama to veto this bill, shame on us. The gop field goes after donald trump. Mr. Trump, we dont need an apprentice in the white house. Apologize to her right now. No, because i said nothing wrong. You attack people on their appearance. Arent we way above that . I never attacked him on his looks. And believe me, theres plenty of subject matter there. I think women all over the country heard what mr. Trump said. An 8. 3 earth quake in chile. Since weve been out here weve seen the waves gain in size and strength. A teenager in texas in handcuffs after building a clock. We dont have any other details. Thats because there were no other details. Its a clock. John stewart lobbying congress to renew the World Trade Center methhealth program. Buckle your seatbelts. Its time to get this done. What is your stance on womens issues . I know a lot of women. And they all have issues. Donald trump got an unexpected endorsement from tom brady. I thought brady didnt like things that were filled with too much air. What would you want your secret Service Code Name to be . Eveready. Its very high energy, donald. Humble. Thats a good one. On cbs this morning. That young lady right there. Could you do your tarzan yell . [ yelling ] [ cheers and applause ] morning sponsored by toyota. Lets go places welcome to cbs this morning. The second president ial debate among the republicans produced plenty of fireworks and revealed some sharp divisions. 11 candidates took the stage in prime time on cnn. Once again, frontrunner donald trump was the center of attention. Other candidates attacked trump early and often. The conversation touched on everything from serious policy issues to a lot of personal insults. Major garrett is at the Ronald Reagan president ial library in simi valley, california, the site of last nights debate. Major, good morning. Reporter good morning. A list of republican critics of donald trump nearly as long as the crowded debate stage itself. Trump defended, par eluryparrie sometimes mocked. Candidates challenged trumps qualifications to be president. Mr. Trump, you dont need an apprentice in the white house. We have one right now. I think theres a sophomoric quality that is entertaining about mr. Trump. But i am worried. The lack of judgment and lack of understanding about how the world works is really dangerous. I think mr. Trump is a wonderful entertainer. Hes been terrific at that business. What i am far and away greater than an entertainer is a businessman. Thats kind of mindset the country needs to bring it back. Trump took the most questions and snapped at jeb bush over trumps business dealings in florida. Donald trump wanted casino gambling in florida. No, i didnt. You did. I would have gotten it. Im not going to be bought by anybody. I promise, if i had wanted it, i would have gotten it. He offered bush a backhanded compliment when the topic turned to one of Hillary Clintons campaigns. Excuse me. One second. More energy tonight. I like that. Asked her reaction to trumps criticism of her looks, businesswoman Carly Fiorina said little but conveyed much. I think women all over this country heard very clearly what mr. Trump said. [ applause ] reporter amid an accusation that he judged fiorina on surface qualities alone, trump doubled down. I think shes got a beautiful face and i think shes beautiful woman. Reporter it wasnt all conflict. Asked what their secret Service Code Names would be as president , the bushtrump conflict cooled. Everready. Its very high energy, donald. [ cheers and applause ] mr. Trump . Humble. Reporter for this race to change, Donald Trumps poll numbers in the early primary and caucus states will have to go down. In the first debate republicans thought that might happen all by itself. Last night they took up the work themselves. Surveys of Republican Voters in those states the next couple of weeks will tell us a lot about trumps fate and the battle for the republican nomination. Major, thanks. Face the nation moderator John Dickerson is with us this morning. Carly fiorinas moment . She had two moments. The big moment was the one that was played there where she responded to Donald Trumps comments about her face, or as mr. Perot said, her persona. There was an answer where she talked about iran and planned parenthood in one. It was a tight, compact answer that showed that she was wellversed, that she had command of the issues. Those kinds of answers helped her as well. Shell advance in the polls this week, probably. I think so. Shes the person everybody is talking about this morning. Does it matter that trump spent a lot of the debate on his heels, as you wrote . Trump said a number of things that people thought would hurt him. For a period he disappeared. The question is, it was raised repeatedly in this debate, is does he have the temperament for the job. It was a high substantive policy debate where he disappeared. That was exposed in this debate. How do you think this debate will shake things up . Certainly Carly Fiorina is going to have her moment here, and can she take advantage of that. The other candidates, jeb bush and scott walker had moments, but they didnt grab their opportunity the way Carly Fiorina did. Ben carson was number two going in. His last debate performance, people thought, where was ben carson . And he still did well. The question is who are your supporters, do you get them from television or social media. Chris christie . He had a strong performance, he came with a script, stop talking about yourselves and Start Talking about people. There were 11 candidates, who will capitalize . Hillary clinton will be the guest on face the nation. That is sunday here on cbs. Congratulations. Looking forward to that conversation. Thank you, john. Carly fiorina will join us in our next half hour. Governor Chris Christie produced another of the debates most talkedabout moments. He reacted as trump and fiorina criticized each others Business Records. Carly, listen. You interrupted everybody else on the stage. You wont interrupt me. The fact is we dont want to hear about your careers, back and forth and volleying back and forth about who did well and who did poorly. Youre both successful, congratulations. You know whos not successful is the middle class in this country who is being plowed over by barack obama and hillary clinton. Lets stop this childish back and forth between the two of you. The new jersey governor joined us earlier from the Ronald Reagan president ial library. Good morning to you, Chris Christie, thank you for joining us. Good morning, thank you for letting me be here this morning. What was your strategy last night . It was to be myself. In a field this crowded what you really need to do is let people know you, be yourself. Thats what i tried to do last night, focus on the problems of the people watching the debate, rather than focusing on the arguments between all the people at the debate. You talked in the past about your Business Record yet you criticized the other candidates for talking about theirs. They werent doing proof points, gayle. They were in a food fight. In the first debate it was between jeb and donald trump. Yesterday it was between donald trump and fiorina. They were going tit for tat with each other. That adds nothing to peoples knowledge about what kind of president they would be. Who are you going to care about . I expressed to folks that everything ive learned on the campaign trail, the problems of regular middle class folks in this country, that really should be the concern of this campaign, and not who made more money at what job. Governor, do you think that after this debate, the second debate, which featured a lot of attacks on donald trump, that he will be declining in terms of polls and in terms of attention . Charlie,i iv have no way of knowing that. Im definitely not a pollster. Last night was very illustrative in terms of who has the priorities for this country and who is prepared to be president of the United States. Im happy with how the debate went for us. It seemed like a lot of attention was focused on mr. Trump. You were in the top five, but there was a whole 32 minutes when you were not called on. Were you happy with how this debate was conducted . I thought it went fine. That 32 minutes was the most boring 32 minutes of the debate. I think thats probably pretty clear from the ratings. So listen, theres 11 people up there. Theres 11 good people. You try to use the time you get as wisely as you can. Listen, when youre talking about other peoples issues, the people of the United States problems, thats what they want to hear about, what will you do to make the government work for them. Theyre frustrated and angry about the fact that the government doesnt work. I wanted to try last night to address them directly. And im glad that we had the opportunity to do it as often as we did. Governor, where are we in this race now, for the republican nomination . Still very early, charlie, still very early. I think what you can see though is the folks who are really serious, the folks who are peeped to talk about foreign policy, to talk about domestic policy, to talk about the Intelligence Community and defense, are showing themselves to come to the for her. To the fore. What matters the most is those willing to say to the American People, i understand what youre going through, im learning from this campaign, which i definitely am, about the things that concern you most. Most importantly, im the type of leader who you can trust and who will remember these lessons when i get to the oval office on january 20th of 2017. Three times during the debate you had its knnot about us, it about you, the voters. Do you think you know the voters better than your opponents . I think im getting to know the voters very well, gayle. People talk about who is an outsider. If youre a republican in new jersey, youre an outsider every day. I vetoed 400 bills from a democratic legislator. I vetoed more tax increases than any other governor in history. In the end im getting to know their concerns very well. I think in the end theyll pick a guy from new jersey who is like them, who is one of them, who understands them, and will bring that understanding to the oval office. Governor christie, great to see you this morning. Thanks so much for joining us. Thanks, guys, great to be back. A small tsunami wave threatened the california coast after a deadly quake in chile.
