KPIX CBS This Morning Saturday March 15, 2014

A remarkable art with a near unpronounceable name. See how one man rescued it from the dumpster and save idd. What would he say . Good job. All that and much more on cbs this morning saturday, march 15th, 2014. And welcome to the weekend. We have a fine lineup of guests including a born new sound. Well have a pofrms from vance joy who shelled his law career to hit the road as a musician. Plus it was q with Malaysia Airlines 370 which van issued a week ago. Ships and planes from several nations including the u. S. Are engaged in a search now entering its eighth day. Investigators expect that the planes transponders were deliberately turned off. Seth, some very big developments overnight. Reporter thats right. Good morning to you. After more than a week of searching and speculation, today some answers from malaysias prime minnesota. He said whatever happened to flight 370, its Communication Systems were cut deliberately. The last signal from the plane came 7 1 2 hours after takeoff. Speaking to a room packed with media, malaysias Prime Minister said new satellite information indicated that two of the aircrafts Communications Systems were switched off separately before the plane left malaysian airspace. Then the plane turned back going west over malaysia then turning again to the northwest. These movements are consistent with deliberate action by someone on the plane. The Prime Minister stopped short of calling this a hijacking. He did say authorities were refocusing their investigation on the crew and passengers on board. Sighting new data, the Prime Minister said the last confirmed satellite communication with the plane was at 8 11 a. M. 7 1 2 hours after it took off. Authorities are still unable to confirm the exact location of the plane at that point, but say there are two possibilities. The northern corridor stretching approximately from the border of kazakhstan and turk min stan to northern thailand. All of the southern corridor stretching across the middle east from indonesia to southern indian ocean. The Investigation Team is working to further refine the information. Reporter officials are now ending the search in the South China Sea and redirecting some of the more than 100 search vessels currently looking for flight 370. Over the last seven days we have followed every lead and looked into every possibility. For the families and friends of theirs involved we hope this new information brings us one step closer to finding the plane. Reporter police here in malaysia confirm to cbs news that the pilots and kru members homes have been under surveillance and now they have been searched. Vinita anthony . Seth doane in kuala lumpur. Thank you. Good morning. Good morning. There was a lot covered. There was human intervention additional seven hours of flight time we hadnt heard of up to this point. What was happening during the seven hours . Certainly we need to be looking and try to understand what happened. Now that we understand theres human intervention i think were going to have to stop using our accident investigation techniques and begin turning this into more criminal investigation techniques. One of the things we learned, marks is the planes altitude weekend up hire. And then lower. What does it suggest . It could be a struggle someone taking over the aircraft and not knowing,000 fly it. Lots of questions that we really begin to believe theres human intervention rather than powe potential mechanical failure. There are so many countries involved in this point. Why do we get the sense that malaysia is taking so much time in releasing information when so many people want to know what happened here . I think its a good question. I think earlier on they believed they could handle this type of investigation. It became overwhelming to them. There was embarrassing information about their inability to track face passport passports and they began to draw in. The investigation really began to blossom when they finally turned the information over that they could validate the tracks that they were just kind of looking at and couldnt whauns they were seeing. The area theyre looking at that seth pointed out is enormous. Mark, is there a possibility that we may not find the plane . The possibility exists anthony, but i really believe we will. Its a 777. Its a very large aircraft. When it finally goes down well be able to see debris. This aircraft has probably been on the ground now for probably seven days. The airplane cant fly for 24 hours. We do believe if the aircraft was filled it could fly for 7,700 miles. We dont believe it had that much fuel on it. We will find this aircraft. We will understand what happened when we get the boxes to be able to tell us exactly what happened on board. These investigators i should i say investigators, but theyre turning to crowd sourcing. There are individual people now who are studying these grids. What are they hoping that someone, a regular person could find . It would be nice if we could get something from that but i really believe the folks on the ground doing the search and rescue search and recovery theyll find whats necessary to discover what happened. The most likely is it went into the indian ocean somehow. If it is there, how difficult will it be to find . Well, the air france that i was involved in it took us five days to get any debreechl two years later we were able to recover the boxes. Two years to find the plane. Why so long . Well they just didnt have an exact pinpoint. But they continues to come back based on some calculations and tomb some very as a matter of fact, it was the folks who helped the french be able to recover and actually pinpoint where the aircraft was. All right. Mark rosenker. Thanks so much. Secretary of state john kerry and his russian counter part in trying to find a diplomatic solution failed yesterday. Meanwhile theyrish issuing a warning to them to steer clear of antiamerican protests. Lets get more from jeff pegues in washington. Good morning. Good morning, anthony and vinita. It was an effort backed and the u. S. Believed orchestrated by moscow to get the region to secede. But on friday john kerry walked away emptyadded. This referendum goes forward only adding tension to that region. The meeting on friday was disappointing and president obama vow add youed a united front moving forward. United states stands united in not only its message about about ukrainian sovereignty and there will be consequences if it continues to be violated. There were talks on russia and the crimean peninsula. Hes not ready to make a decision until after the referendum. We believe the referendum is contrary to the constitution of ukraine, contrary to international law. The russian referendum is ready for sunday. The pending vote has heightened tensions in the region prompting Ukrainian Forces to prepare for the worst. The u. S. And europe are also planning their next move which could come in the form of sanctions as early as monday. It is not where we want to go. Its not what were choosing as a first choice, but if the wrong choices are made then there will be no choice but to respond appropriately because of the gravity of this breach of International Standard breach of Enter National law. There will be a u. N. Security council vote to declare sovereignty and declare sundays resolution invalid but the resolution is not expected to pass. Russias presence on the council all but guarantees that. Jeff pegues in washington. Thank you. In ukraine, two were kill and more than two dozen were arrested. The president is blaming the violence on what he describes as kremlin agents. They will d e side whether to stay in ukraine or have it become part of russia. Elizabeth palmer is in russia. Elizabeth, good morning. Reporter good morning, anthony and vinita. The referendum is less than 24 hours away and despite all that International Condemnation weve just been hearing about, it doesnt look like anything can get in the way of the vote now. On the surface, this is just another saturday in crimeas capital simferopol except for the armed men on the streets. With the help of thousands of russian soldiers seized it a few weeks ago. The Campaign Billboard say it in a nutshell. All together with russia. The new crimean president may have to accept the fact that he may lose a prime chunk of his territory. Were prepared to resolve it but unfortunately russia refuses to review i. Outside the capital, members of the cried mean authority put on a brave protest of their own. The signs say we want to stay with ukraine, but its almost certainly a lost cause. Their leaders will boycott tomorrows referendum which will almost certainly hand diseasive victory to those who will hand crimea to them. Over the past week a sincester pattern has emerged. Ukrainian leaders who may have been able to marshal a vote against russia may have either been arrested or simply disappeared. Anthony, vinita. Elizabeth palmer. Thanks liz. From malaysia to ukraine, theres plenty to discuss. Bob schieffers guests will include congressman mike rogers of the Michigan House and tom donilin, security adviser to president obama. There is hope that the death toll in new york wont climb any higher. Michelle miller is here with the latest. Good morning. Good morning. The emergency workers are continuing to clear the debris from the site of the deadly explosion. Theyre expected to reach the basement levels today. They plan on conducting tests to pinpoint the source and time line of the apparent natural gas leak. Surveillance video obtained by our new york station wcbs shows an explosion that destroyed a pair of fivestory parents in upper manhattan. It blew out windows and sprayed debris in all directions. It happened at 9 30 wednesday morning. Utility workers arrived too late. It revealed that an unsafe concentration of gas had seeped into the ground near the buildings. Is there any indication of how long gas may have been leaking prior to the explosion . Thats exactly what we want to find out. Investigators are focusing on the underground gas main that runs in front of the buildings. The 8inch cast iron pipe was installed in 1887. Firefighters worked friday to clear the remaining rubble. They believe the cause and or gin of the explosion could be found in the buildings basements. Out shows the cost to replace a broken gas line run in the billions. Thank you michelle. Criminal charges are being placed on rashad owens for riding into a crowd at the west by southwest festival. He is charged for not breaking and accelerating when he reached the crowds. General motors is under growing pressure to compensate victims and families for a deadly ignition switch defect that prom prompted the recall of 1. 6 million gm cars. Terrell brown is here with the latest on that story. Good morning, terrell. Good morning to you. A classaction lawsuit has been filed and it could lead to growing increase in deaths. It may include teenagers learning to drive in gms market entry cars. Reporter the class action wants gulf of mexico to notify people not to drive defective vehicles. He represents the families of 18yearold tania and 15yearold amy killed in a crash blamed on a defective chevy cobalt. You have all of america buying the car using it like my client teaching your child how to drive, i thinks its going to be safe. Meanwhile gm had files in their own filing cabinet. Gm connects 12 deaths to the recall of its 1. 6 million vehicles. Charles silver is one of a growing users who said his chevy simply shut down while driving. There was a car in front of me. And i didnt have brakes. I was pressing and they were tight. Luckily enough we were able to pull up the emergency brake. Scarier still, his two teenage sons were learned how to drive in ta car. Theyre in the car all day. Now hearing everything that happened were just grateful Nothing Happened to them. Theres a 19yearold girl driving a kobalt somewhere in america with this defect. So then you have her life in danger, the lives of the people driving around her in danger e how do you reach out to all of them. Them . A defect that could have been fixed at the outset. What gm may have to shell out if the lawsuit is successful 6 billion. Gm is not responding directly to the suit but has apologized and said it will take care of its customer customers. Meanwhile theyre looking into why it took so long for them to address it when documents show they may have known about it a decade ago. There was plenty of news about home mortgages. Joining us is nick timeros who covers housing for the wall street journal. Good morning. Good morning. Lets start with freddie and fannie. If theyre replaced what is it going to mean for them . Its the 10 billion question. The challenge for congress here is to try to come up with a new system if thats what they want to do get rid of fannie and freddie. Who and what is going to provide credit. Twothirds are made possible through fannie and freddie. A lot of people dont understand what these two companies do. They buy them from lenders. They package them into securities and theyre guaranteed to make those investors whole if borrowers involve. Otherwise those investors would not be purchasing u. S. Mortgages. It makes possible the 30year fixed Rate Mortgage that you can pay off at any time so you can finance. Which many countries dont have. You can lock into your rate. So if were going to get into fanny and freddie, its going require some new system of guaranteeing mortgage bonds or hold mortgage loans. What about those responsibility . The Justice Department put out a report saying they another doing enough. What should be happening at this point . Right. There was a report this week saying the government is saying one thing about its prosecution of mortgage fraud effort us but actually the fbi has not looked into it. The Justice Department says thats not really fair. Mortgage fraud is on the decline. There was a lot of problems during the housing bubble. Lending standards tightened up so were not seeing as mump. But it was an embarrassing report for the Obama Administration because it had a number of facts in it that showed they had really been overstating the and of investigations and prosecutions that theyve been trying to carry out. Mortgage rates have been up a little bit. Whats your sense of where the Housing Market is right now . The Housing Market is softer than it was a year ago. Mortgage rates went up by a full percentage point so weve seen demand kind of cool a little bit. Last year we had cheap Mortgage Rates and lower home Mortgage Rates. That took a bite out of consumers buying power, so weve seen a little bit of a bite in the market. Its time to look at headlines. The New York Times looks at new le released documents. It showed mr. Clintons aides tried to portray him as a leader and republicans gaining control of congress in 1994. The wall street journal says the federal government is getting out of the internet business. The Commerce Department will give up its role of managing the Organization Nation that assigns names and addresses. Its a response to increasing International Concern about u. S. s concern over the internet structure structure. The owner of an ice cream parlor is charged with beating a man with a tire iron. Hes no longer with pink berry. Interestingly enough a friend said he was homeless at one time also. The herald says bostons brewery is pulling out or a parade. A bar along the route threatened to stop serving sam adams unless organizers change their position. And the star tribune says they want to arm all patrons with ear buds to prevent them from hearing loud music. Most of the places i go to have them already. It is about 22 minutes after the hour. Now heres a look at the weather for your weekend. Up with affordable ways for people to have solar power. Reporter im plan don scott literally out on the range here in southern texas. When you testified, you had no intention of i going and testifying in front of the Senate Committee and jill abrab som said at the time you basically walked into a lions den. What did you understand was going to happensome. I understood they were going to ask questions but the level of outside incidence of press conferences and statements about me that were made by people who were on the committee, i think, were so far beyond what i expected to happen. I expected to be able to give my testimony, for them to ask probing questions because i really wanted the people to understand exactly what had happened. But i didnt think all of the outside campaigning that was done against my testimony by the people who were supposed to be determining what the truth was was appropriate. But now when you look back having just said that do you think the hearings were fair when you look back at it today . No. No, i dont. I dont think they were fair. Again, the people who were finders of fact the triers of truth, were outside campaigning against me. It would be like having a judge on a Judicial Panel outside giving press conferences about one of the witnesses. You cant have a fair hearing. But the question from the senators was unfair . The questions themsel
