KPIX CBS This Morning Saturday March 22, 2014

Title of biblicalthemed movies throughout the year. You may have never seen this . The rise of the ninepin bowling, the goal is not to knock them all down on this saturday, march 22nd, 2014. Captioning funded by cbs and welcome to the weekend. We also have some great guests for you this morning including one of our favorite chefs kathie lee who litearned to cook literally on her grandmothers knee. Plus from nashville, she worked on wall street before performing. Now she has bob dylans attention. We begin with our top story the search for Malaysia Flight 370. The hunt is now headed into its holly williams. Shes at the air force base where the search is. Good morning. Reporter good morning. We have breaking news at this hour that the chinese may have spotted some of the wreckage of flight 370 somewhere many the indian ocean. 1,500 miles off the coast of australia search crews continue to scour the seas. A new satellite image released by the chinese authorities and taken four days ago appears to show two objects, one around 70 feet, the other 40. Theyre miles from the ones spotted last weekend. At first light this morning a team of six military and kmernl commercial aircraft began again. Theyre searching. So far its the only credible lead since flight 370 disappeared along with itself 239 passengers more than two weeks ago. But its in one of the most remote corners of the earth, a fourhour flight from australias west coast and in seas that sometimes swell to 50 feet. Australian aviation expert jeff thomas told us the search is the most difficult ever undertaken in aviation history. To put it into say, american context, its like flying from chicago to los angeles searching for two hours in a sea thats Something Like a north atlantic storm and then flying back to chicago. This is about as tough as it gets. Reporter since radar has proved ineffective in rough weather, the pilots and the crews are now relying on their own eyes trying to spot the brie in the churning ocean. Its down to several hundred feet off the water. Theyre kind of jumping the swells if you like. This is tough. Its and theyre very very skillful. Reporter the australian Prime Minister visited the search team today and warned theres no certainty that the two objects sighted were part of the missing malaysian airliner jet. There is a lot of ocean debris floating around the globe continuously, and containers do fall off ships, and so there are any other numbers of potential explanations as to what these items actually are. Those who have done the Technical Analysis believe theyre of interest in relation to this disappearance. And even though this is not a definite lead, it is probably more solid than any other lead around the world. And thats why such an interest is being put into this search. Reporter and if the objects are the wreckage of the boeing 777, strong currents could have already dragged them hundreds of miles from where they were last seen or they may have already sunk to the ocean floor. None of that has deterred this international effort. Military planes from the u. S. , australia, and new zealand, will soon be joined by aircraft from china and japan. They will continue to solve the mystery disappearance of flight 370. Anthony and vinita. Holly perth in australia. Thank you. During her visit to beijing, the First Lady Michelle Obama talked about the missing jet airliner with the students at peking university. My husband said theyre offering as much is that can the assist in the search and please know that we are keeping all of the families and loved ones of those who were on the flight lost in our prayers at this very difficult time. Reporter seth doane has been following this story since it broke and he follows this story from kuala lumpur, malaysia. Seth good morning. Reporter good morning. Here all eyes are on the search off the coast of Western Australia but as holly broadcast, the news of the chinese satellite seemed to take the acting transport minister by surprise. He seemed surprised by that news. Just earlier he mention thad a high delegation went to beijing today to meet with the passengers family members there. The malaysian government affects the highest party and search and rescue. Reporter representatives from the malaysian government met with passengers relatives in beijing today but left without taking questions. We are here. We want to know what happened. Reporter some worry the search may only issue more false hope. This mans flight was on flight 370. Every bit of major news turns out to be disappointment, he told us. I wonder how much disappointment is still ahead of us. Shu was among those protesters who made International Headlines when they unfurled banner criticized the malaysian government of hiding the truth. Even malaysias transport minister seemed to transmit his own worries to reporter this morning. My biggest concern is if we are not able to identify the debris having to go back to the corridor, the huge and massive area. Reporter so many here are touched by this international mist mystery. This is the house right here. Reporter and you pass by it on your way to the mosque. Yeah. Reporter he lives down the street from flight 370 eerss copilot fariq hamid. You know the copilots dad. Yeah. Reporter how is the dad doing . Of course, everyone wantsances but many of the family and friends of passengers are also concerned this debris may indeed fwlong the plane. They say, were indeed holding out hope that the plane is intact somewhere. Vinita, anthony . Thanks very much. With this mornings breaking news, lets bring in mark rosenker. Hes a former ntsb director and a consultant for the cbs news. The Chinese Ambassador handed a note to the minister to begin showing the fact that the chinese may have found something. Theyve got photographs on a satellite that may show additional debris. Weve seen all the efforts focused on the south indian ocean. People say thats the most inaccessible spot of the earth. Does this change anything in the search now . Not really. Its exactly where they are searching. They could see potential or additional debris. Some may have drifted way. It could have even sunk and then we may never find it. That highlights part of the problem. If you see something on a satellite image, it doesnt mean youre going to be able to get to it in time. In this case lets hope that what the chinese have spotted on their satellites is fresh. The data we were looking for was about four days old so that really gave us tremendous challenges to try to find it because of the drifts and currents. Theres been a lot of talk about the drifting buoys. What are they . Theyre marking places where theyve been so they dont have to go back and ultimately theyre best used when in fact you find something and you can begin marking that and from that do the applications necessary for the calculations to take a look at where the potential real primary debris site would be. Mark were now into the third week of this search. How unusual is it that we havent found at least some debris at this pointsome . Its absolutely extraordinary, anthony. I remember one that took us a year to find it. Steve faucetwcettfawcett. He was a well known aviation pilot. They found some things down on the track where hikers were. We found the actual debris site and solved the accident at that point. Even hearing this is the most inaccessful water and the currents are so strong i think a lot of people are wonderinger boy ansi especially since the planes wings were empty of fuel seats. Why hasnt anything turned up . Its a very good question. We just dont know where to find these pieces because we just cant tell. The satellite images are good points to look for. Theyre good starting points but we havent been able to lay eyes on them. We havent been able to verify that what we have from the satellite photographs are actual pieces of the aircraft. At one point, mark when you presided over the search for your the air france plane two years ago which happened to be 2,000 feet under the atlantic, i believe, if the plane is in this body of water, it could be 13,000 feet down. How does this complicate things . It complicates things a great deal. I was there when it first went down and i was hoping by virtue of having the first five days and finding the debris it would be easier. It turned out it took two years to find them and recover them. Its challenging to work in. The winter will come in. This is not going be an easy search. So many talks with those family members. Mark rosenker thank you so much. And now to the confrontation in ukraine. The state Department Warning americans not to travel to ukraine. Russian troops continue to amass and the u. S. Is warning moscow that further aggression will lead to more and tougher sanctions, this as president obama prepares to depart for europe and talk to others on the crisis. Mark is in our bureau in washington. Good morning, mark. Good morning, vinita. The state has issued that warning to avoid traveling to southern and eastern ukraine. It now stretches along the even tire ukrainian board were some as close as 30 miles away. Despite the russian tanks and tactical aircraft russias defense minister told the u. S. Secretary chuck hagel the moves are just part of an exercise with no intention of invading ukraine. Given their past practice and the gap between what they have said and what they have done we are watching it with skepticism. Reporter National Security adviser susan rice says the u. S. Was reassessing its relations with russia in light of the recent situation with crimea. This is obviously a very worrying and fragile situation, but we have very much admiring the posture that ukrainian people and government have taken. Theyve exercised enormous restraint. Reporter president obama is due to meet with the other six countries in the hague with ukraine front and sun ter. The United States is leading the International Community in supporting the government of ukraine and the people of ukraine and inin posing costs on russia. Reporter White House Press secretary jay carney warned future problems could harm them. Everybody who has a visa or mastercard who tried to use it today, transactions are denied. Whatever accounts they have with those financial institutions, those accounts are froeszen. U. S. Defense secretary chuck hagel told his ukrainian counterpart yesterday the United States is actively reviewing ukraines request for nonlethal equipment and military materials. Mark anthony in washington. Thank you, mark. A team of 200 national monitors arrives in ukraine in order to relieve tensions. For more heres Charlie Dagata in donetsk. Reporter they will not be allowed into crimea. Specifically the region in the east where an alleged buildup of Russian Forces along the border has this country on edge again. The drive to the border takes you through farmland and miles of open fields like this that pmay be the crossing point for a russian invasion. If that happens, theres not much to hold Russian Forces back. We found three Ukrainian Border guards manning the last checkpoint on the road to rur. Russia. They said they were under strict orders not to let journalists film so we had to rely on dashboard camera. Ukrainians told us they had seen no signs of troops. But you have heard there are more russia forces around here. No comment. Reporter the hamlet is only four miles from the border. Reporter people here have told us theyre worried. They account not sleep at night. Theyre hearing all kinds of reports of a Russia Military buildup. They told us on their russia relatives every day desperate to find out whats going on. Nothing, they said. No tanks, no troops. But it hasnt done much to calm their fears. Afraid of what . Were afraid of war this woman told us. Theyre still digging trenches long that border but what we didnt see considering the threat is a large buildup of Ukrainian Forces and residents said thats just fine by them. The last thing they want is for their village to be turned into a battlefield. For cbs this morning saturday, im Charlie Dagata in donetsk, ukraine. The deadline to sign up is march 31st, just nine days away. The original goal was to have 7 million americans on the role by then. John dickerson joins us from the Washington Bureau with a look at where we stand. Good morning. Good morning, anthony. First of all, what are we going to know on the 31st . Were going to know from the administration well have to Third Quarter word for it how many people have envol. Were up to 5 million. The key question is who has paid. Theres about a 15 to 20 dropoff between those enroll and those who are actually paying and the question of whos paying and whether theyre paying at all and where they are frp those are crucial questions. Its hard not to notice the push toward the young people. You have the president speaking with zack gal fi na indication and lebron james and even ellen degeneres. Is all that working . Are young people enrolling . The push is working only if they sign up. A lot of Young Americans dont use a lot of health care and their fees will be used to cover the older sicker americans who do use the health care. So far theyve gotten 25 of the signup they had hoped for. They had hoped for 40 . The question is are the young voters then taking the next step . The enrollment figures have gone up in march. Theyre about now where they were in february, so theyve already sur passed that mark in massachusetts where this experiment because tried out. They saw this right before the deadline. A lot of people signing up but we wont know for a while whether all those drirn there went to the final end of the process and pald for coverage. Whats the next important deadline, jon . Its when they start releasing their new rates. That will tell us whether they evenen done the new rates. Whether its a lot of these younger americans who will keep the costs down but theres a provision in the law that helps Insurance Companies deal with the bumpiness of instituting all of this so there are ways. That will be the next big new question. What are the rates and will the premiums go up. John dickerson in washington. Thank you. Its time to show you some of the head liens.
