The woman who recorded racist comments made by Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling says sterling is not a racist. V. Stiviano spoke in an exclusive interview with abc news barbara walter. Is Donald Sterling is racist . No. I dont believe it in my heart. Have you heard him say derogatory things about minorities in general and blacks in particular . Absolutely. Youve heard him say derogatory things . Yes. Dont they sound racist to you . I think the things he says are not what he feels. Anyone can say anything in the heat of the moment. Donald sterling has also spoken out publicly for the First Time Since his ban from the nba. Carter evans has that part of the story. Reporter the single quote from Donald Sterling appeared in du jour a little known magazine geared towards the mega wealthy. He told the reporter i wish i had just paid her off. A rirchseference to v. Stiviano who recorded the racist remarks. Dont bring black people and dont come. Reporter on thursday ten nba team honors agreed to move forward as expeditiously as possible. Weve learned the group is you are 0 cbs News New York times poll nearly half of all americans think sterling should be forced to sell the team but our poll also shows that support is divided along racial lines. Most africanamericans, 71 , think he should be forced to sell, while only 43 of whites do but university of Southern California law professor michael chazlow says the move to eventually impact other team owners. The question is what if someone does something in the future that maybe it outrages half the country, not all of the country. Is that also going to be grounds to force somebody to sell . How far does it go . Reporter sterling is also facing another battle. Cbs news confirmed the 80yearold billionaire has been fighting Prostate Cancer for several years. Weve got game seven coming up in los angeles reporter the clippers now head into game seven with their season on the line and the teams future ownership still in down. Head koesh doccoach doc rivers. This thing has touched a lot of people and again the people that didnt do anything are being harmed. Reporter once the nba provides sterling with a copy of the written charges against. Hell have five days to reply. After that the rest of the team owners will meet within ten days to decide the next steps. For cbs this Morning Saturday carter evans, los angeles. Sean gregory is Senior Sports writer for Time Magazine and following this story closely. Good morning. Good morning. If this quote attributed to sterling is true the i should have paid her off quote, whats your reaction to that . Its not surprising. Hes got a lot of money. A way it could have went april way for him but he didnt do so and now we have what we have. Weve been hearing a lot about this vote. Its interesting to me because you read things like all of the owners are in support of silver Something Like 29. What do you think will happen behind closed doors . Especially with someone like mark cuban saying this is a slippery slope for owners. Interesting for cuban. After the punishment tweeted he supports adam silver 100 . Owners are realizing if they vote against kicking out sterling its a huge Public Relations problem for them if it leaks out you voted for what seems like almost 100 racist. You saw what v. Stiviano said, that she doesnt believe hes a racist. How does that affect this do you think . I mean you know their relationship protection, who knows what its going on there. The bottom line adam silver has said these views are public. He said what he said. Hearing is believing. What about the litigation . People have said this could be like arod. Will we see a really long battle here . Donald sterling is the nba commissioner gives broad powers to kick sterling out of the game. Sterling will probably fight. He doesnt seem to have much recourse under the bylaws and federal courts have shown they dont like to get involved in sports fights intramural squabbles, as we saw in the arod case. Meanwhile, still a basketball game to be played. The clippers play game seven tonight. What do you expect from them . I think the clippers were distracted in game four when it first came out. They go home to game five, were motivated. The penalty came out. Yu saw the fans get behind them. I think theyre going to win dont. They lost game six in golden state, not a surprise. But i would not being shoulded if this becomes kind of a motivating factor. The other thing, this has been an unbelievable nba playoffs. Five game sevens in the first round. The prior record was two. Its overshadowing all the great basketball as well. A new cbs news poll that shows a majority americans think a heavy fine and lifetime ban appropriate punishment but divided about whether to sell. He stands to get a lot of money if he sells . The ultimate punishment he sells the team. At the end of the day, he cashes in. Interesting to see if the all mill sale is meted out, he could probably sell them for 700 million. The Milwaukee Bucks sold for a lot. The clippers could go for a lot more. Try to give it away . To restore his legacy . Or just cash in and live the rich mans life and thats punishment, at the end of the day. All kinds of complications here and sadness. How long do you think, quickly, this will play out . Theres some process, five days here. Ten days here. I think pretty quickly. The nba has rules and bureaucracy but they have to move quick. If it goes into the start of the next season talkss boycotts the nba doesnt want. Adam silver heard the players voices. This is a players league. Almost 80 of the players are africanamerican. So theyre not going to stand for this. The sterling controversy will be a major topic tomorrow morn on face the nation. Including mayor Eric Garcetti richard williams, father of tennis stars venus and serena and host of cbs sports nfl today. Bob will also discuss ukraine and the benghazi investigation with senator Lindsey Graham republican of South Carolina. Among the popular features it found samsung copied the slide to unlock button on some of its phones and auto correct. Samsung accused apple of infringing two of its patents and in the end found guilty of just one that involves photo and Video Organization in folders. This is apples version. This is samsungs version. That will cost apple 158,000 but the case is not just about the money. I mean its about the market. You know these are the only two Companies Making any money from smartphones. The only two Companies Really selling any smartphones at this point, and battling over dominance. Reporter experts say it really doesnt mean anything for us. You can still use your phones involved in this case and the newest devices arent an issue. For cbs this Morning Saturday betty yu california. Now to the growing threat of allout war in ukraine. Fighting between pro and antirussian groups spread to the port city of odessa on the black sea. Dozens killed. Police detained more than 100 others. Observers held captive for a week were precede. In ukraine with the latest our reporter. Good morning. Reporter well good morning, from a very rainy ukraine. Those military observer whose have been released by the prorussian militants holding them are on their way back now from the city where they were being held. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian Military is continuing with an offensive aimed at taking back towns that have fallen under proprussian rebel control. Nearly a week after they were taken by prorussian separatist seven International Observers were released. Five ukrainian officers taken with them were also freed. Were e have been treated as good as possible. This is a miserable situation. Reporter it was a rare piece of good news in a conflict that is now spreading across this country. In the southern port city of odessa clashes between proukrainian and prorussian factions left more than 40 people dead yesterday. Most casualties came after a building where prorussian activists were hunkered down caught fire. Reportedly because of molotov cocktails thrown inside. In the east of the country, the Ukrainian Military launched an offensive to take back a city under the control of militants for almost a month. Two ukrainian helicopters were shot down in the fighting. This amateur video shows a plume of smoke were one of them apparently crashed, though no wreckage has been found so far. The government claims one helicopter was brought down by a surfacetoair missile. That hasnt been verified but u. S. Intelligence sources are treating the report as credible. As troops pushed in they were surrounded by angry residents. Many here support russia and say the government in kiev a hostile. We want them to leave. Thats it. Reporter we dont have weapons, this woman said. We dont have anything. A spokesman for russian president Vladimir Putin has blamed the uptick in violence on the west and the government in kiev and said it would be absurd for ukraine to have president ial elections. Those are currently scheduled to take place later this month. Anthony . Thanks. House republicans are again pressing the Obama Administration over the attack on the u. S. Consulate in benghazi libya in 2012. Speaker john boehner is forming a select committee to investigate disclosures this week that show the add min strigs misled the American People. Mark al enter the in our Washington Bureau with more. Reporter good morning. Speaker john boehner as recently as last month saw no reason for such a highprofile committee, but changed his mind this week and announced it just hours after a different House Committee subpoenaed secretary of state john kerry to testify. The rapid fire kerry subpoena in special select Committee Announcement on friday capped off a week that saw the release of a previously unseen white house email written by Deputy National security adviser ben rhodes. It was sent in the days after the 2012 attack which killed u. S. Ambassador Chris Stephens and three other americans. Republicans call the email a smoking gun that shows the white house wrongly blamed an antiislamic video, putting, they say, political damage control over the facts. None of them think its a video. None of them. The military the cia, the cia station chief. The state department. All of them the facts at the time mr. Chairman the facts, do not point to a video. That only comes from the white house. Reporter the email only came to light after a lawsuit by the conservative Watchdog Group Judicial Watch. Speaker boehner said the administrations withholding of documents is a flag grant violation of trust and forces us to ask the question what else about benghazi is the Obama Administration still hiding . Everything looked at ad nauseam by multiple committees. Whats the point . Reporter the spokeswoman said taxpayer dollars would be wasted on a select committee and there is no evidence of an administration coverup. I am confident that what the republicans allege that there was some attempt by this administration to cover up or spin what happened is 100 false. Reporter republican senators john mccain, Lindsey Graham and kelly ahut called an harry reid to join the house investigation, but thats unlikely. Reed reid issued a statement calling it a political circus and dismissing it as yet another political food fight. Anthony . Mark albert in washington. Thanks. Editors note ben rhodes the white house Deputy National security advisers, mentioned in marks story is the brother of cbs news president david rhodes. More than 200 people are dead in a massive landslide in afghanistan, but that number is expected to reach more than 2,000. Heavy rain triggered landslides leaving more than 4,000 people displaces. At least 100 injured. Fears another section of the mountain could collapse threatens survivors and rescue workers. The federal governments latest jobs report held good news for out of work americans and the u. S. Economy. Em plois addedadded em lawyerployers added job. Lowest since the fall of 2008. Talk it over with the cbs news contributor and analyst in San Francisco. Melanie, good morning. Good morning. Is this just a bounceback from a sort of a oppressed winter or is this really the economy taurn turning the corner . I think both. There definitely was pentup demand because the winter was so harsh all over the country. Thats for sure. But the other part of it is i think i can give you a qualified, yes, that the economy is turning the corner. This jobs number was much bigger than anyone expected. The qualified part is that we also saw 806,000 people leave the workforce and take our Labor Participation rate to a 36year low. Thats the bad side of this jobs story. If ive learned anything from listening to you and anthony, the types of jobs are just as important as the number itself. What kinds of jobs were added . Actually that is goodness. Of the jobs the vast majority were private sector with 15,000 jobs that were government. Of the private sector jobs 105,000 of them were professional services engineering, health care. Higher paying jobs that are aun considered white considered collar. Just 68,000 the lower paying food service or retail jobs that generally dont push the economy ahead. Melody, when job seekers see a number like this a strong number 288,000 jobs created what does that do to the psychology of the lab are market, do you think . I actually think this is really important because i said this Labor Participation rate is at a 36year low. I think well see fits and starts on this job story, because i think people are going to see the overall number drop and say, the environment is much better. I should get back in it and try to get a job, which will take the Unemployment Rate up again. So we may see back you know two steps forward, one step back but overall for the psychology of the average person watching the Unemployment Rate drop especially from the high we saw at 10 during the worst of the crisis is a very very very good thing. Its obvious this report was good. How much on the Employment Firm . A lot further. Within an ear shot but still certain areas, minorities in this country stil
