If you include the 1st 5 days of Avengers any game summer box office is up about one percent from last year close to an all time record if you're a traditionalist and measure from the 1st day of May It's down about 2 percent either way this summer has belonged to Disney which opened not just in game but toys story for a Latin and the Lion King which together took in the lion's share about 40 percent of the $4800000000.00 audiences spent at North American movie theaters Bob Mondello N.P.R. I'm Robin Young It's here in now and it's Labor Day We hope you're working if you want to be but aren't if you don't in Florida and other parts of the East Coast many people have no choice barbecues have been put off as people track Hurricane Dorian today and we have what meteorologists are calling a significant change to report in the direction this Category 4 storm is now taking it have been stalled over the Bahamas moving into lumbering snail's pace but Jeff Hoffman meteorologist with the Florida public radio emergency network what are you seeing now Well good afternoon Robin and yes said this is a change a much anticipated much awaited change the National Hurricane Center says that Dorian is now moving to the west northwest it is gaining latitude still moving at a snail's pace and one miles per hour but they have now determined that the the wobbles we thought we saw earlier are indeed potentially a sign that the storm will follow the predicted path and make that turn more to the northwest eventually sparing Florida a direct hit from Hurricane Dorian we still have we still have to watch this closely this is not a slam dunk of a turn but it is certainly a significant sign that the forecast mean if it stays offshore it still is a hurricane for so what does that mean for surges for wins absolutely the potential and the predicted impacts along Florida's coast will not change but there's certainly been a lot of fear and anxiety that potentially Dorian could continue marching westward the forecast has been quite uncertain over the last 2 or 3 days but this is good news for those who would feel were fearing a direct impact and we still expect storm surge inundation of 5 or 4 to 7 feet along Florida's east coast potentially 2 to 4 feet lots of wave action and ocean swells could cause significant damage along the coast there could also be some tropical storm or hurricane force wind gusts along east of I $95.00 from West Palm Beach to Jacksonville those protests. Well hazards remain because Robin Dorian is is May be weakening just a bit but the size of the storm is growing in fact it could be twice the size that it was yesterday by leaks who said don't think that because it went from a 5 to a 4 it means that you're safe that's like the difference between getting hit by an 18 wheeler on a train and going to said that's a great analogy that's correct we can't really focus on the categories in the wind speeds now it's more about how close it comes to the coast and how far out from the center those impacts spread Well what about Georgia and North and South Carolina going for the north well confidence continues to increase that the storm again will stay off shore in fact it will likely kind of parallel the coast and kind of make that same type of curve that the coastline does up into the mid Atlantic states but just like in Florida residents in Georgia South Carolina North Carolina should prepare for and I know they already are but central storm surge coastal flooding we know much of South Carolina's Low Countries very vulnerable to this and right along the coast again mostly east of I 95 heavy rain and possibly tropical storm winds look tracking hurricane is like trying to catch a dust bunny you know when you're sweeping they just dash all over the place and as you said they wobble it's like a drunken top to possibly turn watch it hour by hour and that's what we're doing here for our partner stations in Florida and South Carolina from the storm center so we have to watch it closely and keep keep informed of each update like you like you're providing now but I'd say this this latest turn to the west northwest is starting to give us more confidence that the models are on track now and we do believe the center of the storm will likely stay offshore from Florida's coastline does this change anything there is there have been evacuations some toll roads have been turned one way so that people can get out will that stop or will that no no that's a great point this this will this will not and should not change anyone's preparedness that actions that they've already taken for the storm what this does it starts to hopefully we've had a lot of friends down here probably who've been very anxious about the storm. Possibly making a direct hit so this should help with residents who live further inland they should be a little more assured right now like say in Orlando maybe in Ocala and Gainesville in portions of North Florida that direct impacts should not be expected from Dora and by the way earlier today the National Hurricane Center warned that there might be tornadoes because these high winds is that off the table certainly we have to watch out for those in the outer rain bands through public radio emergency network watching Hurricane Dorian as she I think makes that left turn people waiting for on this Labor Day Jeff thanks for your work you're welcome and now to Texas where the city's Odessa and Midland are reeling after a gunman drove through both on Saturday killing 7 people injuring over 20 more of a Public Radio's Carlos Morales is here and Carlos we spoke to during the El Paso shooting now this one terrible stories we know the shooter was pulled over by police for failing to signal he fired on them a young woman on the phone with her sister her sister scream as the shooter killed her and then took her truck. Talk about how this was different than a shooting that happens in one space people don't know where the shooter was going next That's right I think for a lot of the people in Odessa they heard ambulances or you know ringing out through . And they didn't know where the person would be or where the shots were coming from the gunman was in one vehicle and as you mentioned he hijacked United States Postal Service mail carrier van and then so people thought there were multiple shooters at one point which you know police have cleared up that there is just the one gunman and people didn't know where he was going to be no you had people that were shot truck that were parked in kind of like a shopping center where there is a Wal-Mart Home Depot and just kind of other places that you would go to one you know any given Saturday to do your shopping you know not we are not naming the gunman but we know others are speaking of him including a neighbor who said that she called police because he would sit on his roof and shoot at her pets in her backyard apparently the police couldn't find her address on G.P.S. But the point is that people knew sings about him that might have raised alarms What else do we know about him he's 36 years old he was a white male and just last night the New York Times reported that the shooting began hours after he was fired from his trucking job born in Texas haven't heard much else as far as kind of those those details at the moment you know what are people there doing now we know there was a 17 month old toddler who underwent surgery for wounds to her mouth your teeth were shot out but we understand she's home playing with her twin. Grace there but what else do we know about how severely wounded others are and how. You know people starting to. Go in shock we understand are starting to mourn you know they are starting to mourn just last night just over a day after you know this terrible tragedy unfolded in our West Texas community people came together at a local university of prayer of people just coming together and really you know in the open just grieving and I think for a lot of people that were there was really a 1st step toward toward healing toward that process of finding that sense of normalcy. There were several people there who spoke to our reporter on the ground at the vigil and they told them that following the shooting they did not want to leave their house they were scared and terrified to go outdoors but when they heard about the vigil they knew they had to be there and that's what started to bring people out so I think last night at this vigil it really was a space for people of the Permian basin of both Odessa and Midland these sister cities that are about a 15 minute drive from each other to come together and really unite and begin the healing process that's where you're seeing the T. Shirts Permian Basin strong but this shooting comes after the you know one in El Paso 22 people killed there Texas is loosening some gun restrictions you know as this is happening and your governor Greg Abbott made an impassioned plea at a press conference saying something has to be done yet others are pointing out in 2015 was he tweet hey let's take back our lead on paraphrasing So people are pointing fingers at him this is a gun state and yet nobody was able to stop this shooter until the police rammed him with a special car you know what is the gun conversation around this well you know at the beginning of our conversation actually in El Paso at that Wal-Mart a lot of the El Paso Democratic delegation the state lawmakers they came together and. We're really urging Texas governor Greg Abbott to push for a special session to bring lawmakers back to the state capitol in figure out a solution to gun violence in the state at that time Abbott you know told press and. Those elected officials that were kind of imploring him to make this move he told them that there wasn't a need for a special session to do this and what he did was he followed through with a series of round table discussions which are happening across the state just one 0 maybe a week ago are just actually maybe this past Friday in El Paso to have these conversations about what can be done I'll be interested to see now what happens given this weekend's shooting I think the pressure is going to beyond to call for a special session and I think some of the state lawmakers that represent Odessa and Midland think it could be a possibility Thank you Robin and of course we'll continue to follow this and other stories hearing. It took rapper Common a while to come around to the idea of talking to a professional about his problems when you knew somebody was going to be there for you so you look at them I mean something's really wrong now knowing that there was something wrong with me to comment on therapy relationships in this new album Let love this afternoon on ALL THINGS CONSIDERED from N.P.R. News. I'm Steve Brown weather forecasters say hurricane Dorians with strength has dropped slightly though it continues to pummel the Bahamas with destructive wind and rain the National Hurricane Center says that the maximum sustained winds speed was Clive the storm was crawling slowly west at one mile an hour 115 miles east of West Palm Beach officials say $34.00 people are missing in feared dead after a fire aboard a commercial scuba diving vessel off the southern California coast U.S. Coast Guard says 5 crew members sleeping on the $75.00 foot boat its top deck were rescued near Santa Cruz Island Iran is for the 1st time acknowledging that a rocket explosion took place and it's come a nice Space Center with an official saying a technical malfunction caused the blast government spokesman says the explosion caused no fatalities You're listening to hearing now. It's here and now the Emmy documentary is National Geographic's free solo which has already won an Oscar for Best Documentary and which had me maybe you sweating buckets watching through fingers even though we knew the ending free solo follows climate climber Alex Honnold as he becomes the 1st person to climb your 70 national parks over 3000 foot Rocky Mountain El Capitan with no ropes to catch him should he fall filmmakers Jimmy Chen and his wife Elizabeth 2 of us really filmed Alex with a team of cameramen climbers on ropes all aware that one little mistake from them could kill him he clings to the tiniest crevice toehold on a ledge or jumps sideways in some ways it makes more sense to use a day to have a job because you're jumping to. But the idea of jumping out or it seems completely outrageous if you miss it that's God that's that . And Jimmy I want to start with you because you know as we see well Alex is training for this climate is a film we're discussing the climb of course 1st and foremost but you filmed it and you and your wife were very conflicted about that explain why well I think the main question for us was whether or not us being there filming him would make it more dangerous or more like you said you were conscious of something called Kodak courage people who will do something because the cameras there they would maybe ordinarily do yes that was one of the central questions that China had to answer for ourselves was whether or not we trusted Alex's decision making process and how he would approach the climate and whether or not the external pressure of reproduction would push him to do something that he wouldn't normally do or whether I see you said somewhere even you know dropping a lens cap yes being that the climbing is very tenuous I mean if you knocked off a pebble even you know it could actually fall 200 feet and hit him just at the wrong moment you know there were a lot of different scenarios that we thought. About and tried to kind of a Madge and all the different outcomes in order to mitigate the risk I think is maybe worth it in that overall the production probably made it slightly safer for me just because one time occurred I courage in a lot of ways I experienced the opposite because I was up there with my friends working and so on because there are people watching me I want to preparing more for the climb than I did you didn't want to put them in the position I mean I can't even this is so hard to even say you'd be dying right in front of them yeah I certainly was trying to avoid that but but even more so I was just trying to do my due diligence to some extent you know I mean the crew was putting so much effort into crafting a great film and so I was trying to do my share you know I was trying to make sure that I put in that amount of effort as well and just to back to that thought not that I want to belabor it but you know to later probably already have but to me you know as you said you would see him go through the frame. Yes I think over the course of 2 years of production and I think I woke up every morning thinking about the worst case scenario that sounds really morbid but I mean it also is a useful tool to make sure that that doesn't happen truly don't think about it every day and you can be like you know I certainly thought about worst case scenarios that you know not every day I mean there has to be a balance of mesquite you know here it is that every day when I woke up in the morning I had like this on the one it all seems pressure as well for you I'll let you know if you feel bad or not go better well let's talk about what we're talking about when we've set the stakes here but Alex free soloing seeming to pull yourself up your other body strength is amazing your fingers are amazingly says I think what's often lost is the joy almost playful it can be to climb a wall of that size and scale and encumbered I mean it does farming and free sewing is you know in some ways the purest way that you can rock climb and so I spent a lot of time talking about the consequences you know facing death those kind of things and there's a natural questions but I think actually the joy of it is why I 1st saw it because it's not like you're not looking you're seeing where you are this context of you know you're you're in the air there are points on the mountain when it's just friction or some kind of friction between maybe a toe on the wall or a thumb and the wall what does that feel like I mean it feels incredible I think you're just kind of touching on it and I mean to be surrounded by air to be in the void but still feel in control personally you know to take a situation that should be terrifying but then to feel comfortable you know through preparation through hard work through I guess self-mastery to some extent you're going to feel incredible we learn a lot in the film about how you have the to Cuellar may be more able to do this than the average bear because you have a special brain apparently where you know you have to do it where it's been tested and you're Migdal it doesn't really fire the way other brains do that's a kind of a but I actually don't think that that's unique for. I think that's the result of 10 years of exposure in the space I mean basically by having spent so much time for sewing putting myself in these positions I think I sort of desensitize my mind to let a certain type of stimulus and that's explained because it doesn't fire up so you're saying I had the chicken in the eye growing years yeah exactly felt exactly so it doesn't fire up the way ours might when we get fighting and or we're thinking we're not going to survive years has toned down exactly I think that the level of stimulus in the test that I underwent is just not sufficient after having spent my whole life recently that's why I've lived for so long so much of a lot of this maybe is that well no so on the actual day of the climb I wasn't particularly intimidating Well that's a very very large but the thing is I put so much preparation into it that's why it was something that I dreamt about for so long I didn't actually do it and I was until I spent 2 years working on it that it actually became a possibility Well this is something that really impacted a lot of the people that I was with who are athletes in different ways every seen and done over and over and over again on ropes Yeah you know it's great dimension talk about the planet in terms of she course of 2 years while he's practicing where essentially also practicing how we're going to shoot it so logistically you know there is
