Crude deal. Haliburton in talks to buy during a decline. Good evening everybody. Welcome everybody. Nice to have you here. A day of deals. One confirmed, two in the discussion stage and all helping to push the dow to a fresh alltime closing high, its 25th of the year. First the possibles, deal one will see the toy maker hasboro buy dreamworks animation. Deal two combine haliburton and baker hughes, more on those in a 340e78 moment. Bu finds Warren Buffett acquiring duracell batteries from procter gamble. P g bought it in 20005. Buffett gets duracell and minimizes taxes by handing over 4. 7 million shares berkshire still owns. They ended half percent higher. We have more on the buy out and what it means for berkshire and why procter a gamble is lettin duracell go. If you heard him say it once you heard him say it a thousand times. Warren buffett likes to invest in big consumer names like fruit of the lum, geico and hines. When he feels the price is right he will pounce. He said he has always been concerned as a consumer. He said it is a leading brand and will fit well in berkshire handling. Berkshire hathaway. Even if sales are down, analyst think there is still a charge to be had in batteries, especially in a deal where Berkshire Hathaway used procter and gamble stock. They are put 2 billion back into duracell before they take over. I think it is interesting on a number of levels. The least of which is the opportunity for berkshire to shed Holding WithoutCapital Gains tax. This is a typical Warren Buffett move that is a deal value play. Duracell came to procter and gamble in 2005, at the time berkshire was the biggest holder but now refocussing on core brands like pampers diapers. They are likely to find a challenge when it comes to growing the actual business in a world where smart phones and tablets dominate and with that high packed rechargeable batteries. Now to the other deal that has wall street buzzing, ad and have ad and haves talk about shrek teaming up with my little pony. Hasborough shares declined more than 4 . We look at the proposed deal and when the two companies stanned to gain or lose. Dreamworks animations makes movies and hasboro makes toys and both trying to cash in. From a content evolution and what were seeing in the industry this will provide competitive kablts. Competitive capabilities. Relying on deals oef the year. Bringing them into new businesses. Struck a big content deal with netflix expanding to Digital Content by buys Youtube Network off tv and hes teamed up with Chinese Government to build a theme park and movie studio. Meanwhile movies grossing 3. 7 billion worldwide for dreamworks but bombed in 2012. Sold part of tv channel discovery while it failed to compete. Analyst is skeptical about this deal. Getting involved in the feature film business is a risky endeavor and i dont see it as a good value for the shareholders. Hasboro has a deal with disney to make marvel and star wars toys. Disney may not want its toy makers to back movies from its competition. We will see if the two company kz tackle that issue and agree to a price. More now on that possible. Ake over in the oil Services News broke late today halliburton in advanced talks to buy hughes. Helping baker hughes shoot up 15 today. Halliburton up 1 . The latest on the talks of combining two of the top three players in the business. How much do we know . We dont know a lot. Theres not even a price tag on this particular deal yet. This comes down to this is an Energy Sector and specifically oil services that has been beat up tremendously since hitting recent highs in june last year. Maybe some of these companies have gotten so depress that they are attracting bigger players. If these guys do combine it would be a big, big company. Slumberjas is the worlds biggest last year making 45 million last year, if you combine halliburton it made 29 million last year 22 billion for baker hughes that would put it near the 51 billion mark. It is coming at a time oil is moving sharply lower, losing quite a bit. What are implications. Some say this could mark up bottom if you stooart to see mar players consolidate. It could be that you will have two or three major, major players. What will be interesting other smaller players can consolidate on the heals of thels of could trigger that. Thank you. Despite the slump in oil, heres how things looks at the close. Dow ending at a new closing high. Nasdaq up 5 and s p up 1. Walmart share shot up near 5 . Encouraging news. We have more. The Third Quarter was stronger than expected for the Worlds Largest retailer, though wa walmart remains cautious for the holiday quarter. For the first time in seven opened by one half . In store traffic fell for the aeltth straight quarter. Walmart ceo said the traffic trend is improving, adding, probably the benefit of lower gas prices. According to chief finance office, it is hard to know how big the benefit really is. The National Retail confederation and other groups are forecasting a relatively robust holiday srn. Season. Some other retailers are not quite as confident. He said he feels, quote, cautiously optimistic about the holiday season. The retailer points to a highly promotional and highly competitive holiday season. If you dont give the best deals consumers wont budge. They are buying other categories, theres a greater share for the consumers dollar and greater demand than just apparel and accessorieaccessori. Almost like a day to day event to grab attention. Walmart announced it will offer door buster before, after, and during black friday, trying to give incentive for consumers to shop and come back and shop some more. For nightly Business Report. Another beating on the top and bottom lines was nordstrom thanks to a jump in sales last quarter. Shares were initially higher even though the company trimmed its outlook. Oil prices falling again today. Now a new fouryear low around 74 a barrel. Domestic crude tumbled to hit that level. Lower oil prices are welcome news, of course for the airlines since fuel is the industrys big expense. All higher today. The steady rise in Airline Stocks and decline in the price of oil are some of the reasons why the dow transport index is near record with more people hitting the roads and tabing ki the skies. Its been a good month for the dow jones transportation average after tumbling 10 they have rallied 18 since midoctober. Airlines like united southwest top performers. Rally is much more widespread. Every one of the components have jumped in the past month, all but one by double digits. One reason they rallied so strongly because they got beat up so bad. Think about it we have a huge Energy Revolution taking place right in the heart of the country and the transports are in the heart of that Energy Revolution so were seeing a snap back. Having another effect as well whether rail road or trucks or shippers, fuel is a top cost, as oil falls cheaper prices will boost profits particularly in the shortterm before the companies reset their fuel charges. More importantly means spend morgue on goods, goods that will need to be moved. Volumes have been growing across all modes of transports and analyst hopes that will continue helping all the players. Still at current prices some experts think the recent rally has made some stocks expensive. We think transports could be over bought due to emotion in the market. We see u. S. Stocks prevailing from the gloebal perspective. But to see those type of gains they are not sustainable. Ups and fed ex are prepping for another record holiday making sure they dont miss delivery deadlines. As the u. S. Economy continues to recover, the transports in general stand to keep benefiting, even if oil begins to recover. For nightly Business Report. Still ahead from the Keystone Pipeline to immigration, how the coming bat th battles in washington may play out now that new leadership has been voted in. Mixed news on the jobs front. First time jobless claims rose by 12,000 last week, a bit more than expected, but the number of claims is still near 14year lows. Also out the departments latest survey on job openings and turnover which shows more than 5 million americans were hired in september the most in one month since 2007 and that more americans quit their jobs that month, apparently confident that they will be able to get a new one. Uncle sam kicked off on the wrong foot up 22 billion in october, up 42 from a year ago. Part of the season is that november 1st fell on a saturday and 41 billion were sent out a few days early during the month of october. A changing of the guard in washington in a closed door session. Mitch mcconnell was unanimously voted in as the Senate Majority leader elect. Today he had tough words for the president in the wake of last weeks midterm election. Ive been very disturbed about the way the president has proceeded in the wake of the election. Whether it was his intervention on nutrality, his apparent decision to move ahead on immigration with executive orders. The rather ridiculous agreement with the chinese let me tell who did get the message, that was senate democrats. I think they got the message on the Keystone Pipeline and i think thats why you seen the current democrat majority in the senate have an epiphany and they decided to allow a vote theyve been blocking. Today the house debated a bill that would have approved more construction along the delayed Keystone Pipeline. We have more on the keystone controversy and what else is on the agenda for the lawmakers as we go into the lame duck. So where does the issue go from here. The house will have a vote and next week the senate will have a vote. Thats right. It wont surprise you to learn theres politics involved in all of that. Behind the scenes what is at stake is a Louisiana Senate seat. Ma ma landriu e is going into a run off, so shes planning to push that through on the senate side. Shes been on the floor today and yesterday trying to get that vote done. She got an agreement for it to happen on tuesday. Shes a democrat though and a lot of democrats seemed to walk away from opposition on skooegs keystone in order to give Mary Landriue a chance at the run offs. Hopefully getting the political credit down in louisiana for it. Plet follow up on the Keystone Pipeline. This is all balled up not only in politics but if the Congress Goes ahead and vote approval will the president , a, veto the bill, will he have to go along with it, its tied up in that kind of struggle also a struggle in nebraska courts. Thats right. The court issue is one complication and the big decision will be whether or not this pipeline is worth signing into law if, a, it helps mary in her senate race and helps democrats keep one more senate seat that could otherwise go the other way, and b, it gives the president the opportunity say i heard the results of the election and im willing to compromise on things the republicans want and so lets get started on a bipartisan bill. This will certainly be a bipartisan vote although heavily republican supported when it gets to the president s desk. Very quickly on china regarding the co 2 emissions is Congress Going to try to undo that, block it, is slow it, what . Yeah Mitch Mcconnell will try to stop what he calls the president s war on coal. He represents the state of kentucky and coal is 450u7bhuge so this is important for his base back home. Thanks very much. Box office hits help viacom wrap up revenue.
