Join with us,r happen together and win the [music playing]nr good evening and welcome to our special npbs news hournprc coverage of the
Democratic National
conventioncoth inxdnr philadelphia im judy woruff. And im gwen ifill, joining us as . ; they did t last week i leave land across the0l arena . Podium nprs rachel re, and in the anchor booth with us is mark shields andw3 new york re columnist, davidnihtxd brooks. And me havep, along with amyq havei]ni john yangnir congressional reporter, susan davis. Thee1 democrats roled intoe1 p1 but not without some controversy. We will get to all that tonight along with speakers after this break. H q thats quite frankly, many of them would have liked to have seen her on the vicepresident doorbell stage instead of tim caine. An
Bernie Sanders
will give us a sense of how this is going but i bumped into david and he said it takes a long time to get over this, this campaign has gone a long time, he went all the way through california, there are a lot of folks who are in that mood and in that mode and thats what is next for these next four days are going to show us. The polling shows us something different, it came out with 90 of bernie supporters saying than they are going to vote for
Hillary Clinton
but this is a different venue. Mark shields, im sure if we rewracked the tape to last monday night you would have found us around the table talking about how dizzy organized the
Republican Party
was. Yes. Clew land went off and the democrats are skinsed theyre going to do the same thing. A week ago democrats were e feeling quite superior, that the republicans had this civil war and an leper colony going on, and that script hasnt been lost i would have to say that most i have talked to feel home sick for cleveland. Philadelphia is a beautiful cit but it is a mess to get to and from and in and out of the convince hall and i think that that is contributes to part of the fractionness and general unhes. The other point i would make is a lot of these sanders people when he began he was 655 behind when you are getting delegates to fill out a slate youre not getting the county chairs, the senate senators, youre getting people who are true believers, who arent pragmatists, and thes are not used to this whole process of, okay, amy has more votes therefore im going to support her, even though she is to the right of the atilla the e huhn. Amy is down on the floor with a sanders delegate. Lets talk to her, susan. Im on the floor with seth burner, he is a maine delegate and he supported bernie in the primary, are you ready to put your support behind hillary il clinton . Thats not a decision i have to make yet, its several months off and i will wait until we geu there th but
Bernie Sanders
said he wants his supporters to get s behind
Hillary Clinton
, why isnt that good enough . Because im not supporting a candidate, im supporting issues. He may feel
Hillary Clinton
is c the right person right now but i might disagree with that so if my support of issues calls for me to look elsewhere at lisa for now then thats what ill do . What do you see your options as . Again, i dont need to make a decision for november right now. The next vote that i have to cast will be wednesday and it will be for
Bernie Sanders
, what i do after that will depend on the condition. I can say that stopping trump is very important to me, but the best way to do that may depend on what has developed between now and then what do you say to your
Democrat Friends
who say a vote not for hillary is a vote for donald trump . That may be what it looks like now, if i get closer to november i may agree more strongly. But i dont think its healthy to be forced into making a commitment . July for what youre going to do in november. Many of the super delegates where going to put hillary over the top made their decisions ns over a year ago before the fbi probe came out and before wiki leakswi came out and revolutiono that she isnt a strong campaigner. I dont know that anything like that will happen between now and november but if it does, i should be free to respond fat. As you can see, judy, a lot of delegates feel like that on the floor. Th he said maybe i will be rey to support
Hillary Clinton
but maybe not. Well, maybe not and we learned a lot of things today, first f all,
Bernie Sanders
isnt a democrat hes an independent and a social list and
Bernie Sanders
doesnt haveh control over his own supporters, today when he spoke to a group of them and he said we live in the real world now its time to support
Hillary Clinton
to have in order to stop donald trump, big round of boos, he sent an email as a personal courtesy to me please no protests or disruptions on the floor, no, we heard whenever
Hillary Clinton
s name came up, a big ruined of boos. Im interested tonight to see what he says, does it have an affect, and can elizabeth re change anything . We want to go to the floor to listen to astrid silva, and i had the opportunity to go to nevada and interview her aa couple of months ago and talk to her about her support for
Hillary Clinton
. Lets listen. I finally graduated from nevada state college. [applause] my family and i are here because of people like senator harry reed. Who put themselves in our shoes and helped us. While president obamas immigration action protected me, we live in constant fear that my parents could be taken away from their grandson, noah so when donald trump talked about deporting 11
Million People
hes talking about ripping families apart, separating families like mine and carlas. Hillary clinton understands this is not who we are as a country. I have seen her comfort children like carla who are scared that they might lose their parents to deportation. I know she will fight to keep ke our families together. I know she will now were going to go down to the floor where nprs rachel re is standing by with one of
Bernie Sanders
s earliest supporters. Et cetera thats right, gwen, im here with u. S. Senator merkley, the only senator to come out and support
Bernie Sanders
, what has been your message to the convention. To advance the vision that bernie put forward we need to follow his lead and
Work Together
in partnership and unit to make sure that our democratic nominee,
Hillary Clinton
is c elected in november. Mb a lot of people ive talked to say this isnt about
Bernie Sanders
the man, its about a movement he started and they dont like being told by the party elders that its time to get in line. Thats right its a grass s
Roots Movement
and people are kind of their hearts are broken that bernie didnt win and now theyre wrestling with how to advance the ideas that they really care about to make sure that we tackle
Global Warming
aggressively, that we take on living wage jobs, expand
Social Security
. How do we do these things . As bernie has indicated the best way to do them is to weave them into the dna of the party, weave them into
Hillary Clinton
s campaign and hes worked well to make that happen and thats the path forward that i think will take us back to our goals. Senator jeff merkley, back to you. Thank you, joining us is new york city mayor, bill de blasio. Will have you have endorsed
Hillary Clinton
, whats going on in your party right snow i feel fine about our party right now, look, i think we had a substantive debate in the mott and i think the progressive wing of the party made an impact on the partys platform, certainly on
Hillary Clinton
s platform and the partys platform and i think its important because people want to see equality income addressed and they want to see this party get to the point organically. Ic i think there is going to be plenty of unit, i dont mistake the immediate frustration today which is as a result of the leaks and legitimate frustration from the larger effort we made over the months to bring people into an alliance and shared effort to win the white house, im convinced that will happen p we just heard from a delegate on the floor who was wearing a crocheted beer can hat and he was more interested in the th issues rather than the candidate, and you helped to lead the occupy movement and it reminds me of that. I think occupy with all of its challenges had a huge impact on the decisions made around the country and indicates how much more could be done if a coherent movement had come out of it. To bernies credit to see a fundamental change emerge, it will an mate the
Democratic Party
and its not at all inconsistent with electing g
Hillary Clinton
president , hillarys platform is from my point of view the most progressive in decades, raisingi minimum wage, higher wages and benefits, taxing the wealthy, these are the kinds of things that we progressives have waited to see inha a platform and now they are. Lets see aey movement that sustains that and achieves thost policy changes were talking to new york city mayor, bill de niblasio. Our city relies on trade and head comparts, isnt the platform policies a disaster for new york city . No, the
Energy Behind
opposing pdp comes from as a result of nafta and the whole thing is constructed around and existing a status quo thats not acceptable, its going to reinforce the concentration of r wealth and power that we have in this country. I think youre going to see a vibrant movement to stop that. New york city is doing quite well without that trade agreement, i think we can all agree, a diverse economy often we can thrive and if there is an going to be a trade agreement they have to be on terms much m more consistently favor able to the
American Worker
and not involving so much reinforcement of the
Corporate Power
structure. May or, long before you achieved fame as mayor, you were a
Boston Red Sox
fan and still are. You ran
Hillary Clinton
s campaign along with rick lasio and rick said afterwards anybody who runs against hillary clintoc ought to be concerned about any allegations of sectionism in the way he comports himself and it would resonate, especially given the
Roger Ailes Fox
news story, how is a trump clinton race going to come down . I honestly believe the economicnr issues are going to dominate this election, more i than terrorism, more than the historical moment of first woman president and i think the more those issues get dominated the better for
Hillary Clinton
and women in swing states, a lot of moderates and independent will choose hillary because donald trump is so outrageously sectionist. If
Hillary Clinton
says there is a problem with sectionism in our country there is. Donald trump uses terminology lightly and in the again attitude he has toward women throughout his career song whatever the indications, the at lack of pay equity, being the sharpest tangible issue besides all symbolism and verbal issues, i think pay quality is being felt by women across the country mr. Mayor we have a questions i want to come back to the unit or lack thereof. This is not what the democratics had planned, they wanted a d contrast to the mess in cleveland and you have hillarys name being booed every time it came up. Why isnt that a problem for democrats . I will be straightforward. Brief answer. Its the first day of a convention after a rather shocking revelation came out and people are getting if out of their system. Sy i think by the time we get to the end of this convention n youre going to see a lot of unit and true die hard bernie rn sanders arent going to give up their unit but i think the majority will give it up and i think that will be evidence by the end of the convention. Mayor bill de blasio, thank h you for joining us. We continue to listen to the he floor and as gwen and mare rah were discussing were hearing occasional boos, whenever
Hillary Clinton
s namee comes u there, more boos. I will be honest, even with luis gutieeerrez, one of the fi brands of congress, i am surprised by the boos, but i understand the anger and the obvious tilt toward secretary
Clintons Campaign
were going to cut away to the floor, we have jason and jarron collins. co nba players, were going to listen to them. I want my kids to know that an i want them to know that any more than any star athlete the president of the
United States
is a role model to millions of children. So when it comes to donald trump how do you tell your kids not to be a bully if their president is one . [applause]en how do you tell your kids to respect their heritage, my wife is mexican american, if their president disparages it . How do you tell your daughters, that theirni president reduces women to their physical appearance . My parents, my family, and all the great coaches ive had in my life have taught me the importance of working hard, playing fair, and most importantly the ability to lead and bring people together to accomplish great things. That sounds like
Hillary Clinton
to me. [applause] now, it is with great pride i introduce the first publicly gay athlete to play in any of the four major sports leagues, my less hand some brother, jason th collins. Thank you, jarron, ill get you back for that one later . My dream was to play in the nba and live my authentic life as a proud gay man at the same time. Chap i was able to accomplish those because of us people who supported me in my life. Before i came out to the world so the cover of
Sports Illustrated
i came taught to the clinton family. I have known their family for over 20 years. I knew they would accept me for who i was and they would help to pave a path for others to do the same. I am forever grateful for their word their unconditional support. They knew that my
Sexual Orientation
made no difference r in my ability to play basketball. Just as someones gender makes no difference in his or her ability to lead our nation hillary has defended the lgtb community for years, from cosponsoring the
Matthew Shepard
crimes prevention act to leading on lgtb human rights and making sure that genders could reflect their true gender as both an
African American
and a member of the lgtb community the choice for continued progress is clear. This november we must elect
Hillary Clinton
as our next president. Thank you. As retired nba player
Jason Collins
managed to get the attention of this unruly audience at the
Democratic Convention
in a way that a number of other speakers have not yet. Amy walter, there is a differene feel to this
Convention Already
isnt there . There was disruption and disunit at the
Republican Convention
last week, how would you describe it . I think david summed it up, democratics have more delegates than republicans do, its 1 billion degrees outside and a little bit hotter in here and it creates a feeling nilike, you know, you can just i think that is spurring on the energy and as well as getting peoples nerves a little bit frayed. But i think what youre seeing e on the program tonight look thit is the message that the
Clinton Campaign
is counting on which is diversity is the way they win this election, demographics will win this election. They put people up on the stagee who have immigration stories,
African American
and
Sexual Orientation
and the message throughout this is going to be that donald trump is aiming his message at ais small group of voters, namely white voters, we are a party thats bigger and frankly, the
Clinton Campaign
will say thats what elected barack obama as well. I remember there were two episodes in the
Republican Convention
that mentioned lgtb rights and a representative from silicon valley. That was it. John re i dawn john yang is with the iowa delegation. At im with chris larson from iowa, he was a sanders precinct captain. You thought he gave up too easily . I was disappointed, i thought he gave up before the convention, also that the on minority reports from orlando, i thought they had a term to have potential to have a fight up here, specifically the trade standard, licked her fingers, stuck it up in the air to see which way the wind was blowing and realized sub sentiment was against it and is now opposed to it but herxd representatives in orlando pushed back on specific language regarding the ttp. And now senator sanders is urging party unit and urging you all to support secretary clinton. Im not doing that. I will not vote for
Hillary Clinton
. I why not . Because its become very clear during this primary seaso that the
Democratic Party
is ic beholding to its corporate masses. Are you going to vote for donald trump . Ru i will never vote for donald trump. What are you going to do in the fall . Sanders Campaign had 48 hours to submit that minority report which they never did. Theyr released that they would not considered as obstructive ve and divisive so they decided d want to in the best interest of the parent. But you would have liked to have had a fight . Barack Obamas treaty,
Hillary Clinton called it a
Gold Standard and there has been a bipartisan consensus, al gore and president bush and others supporting it but when you see people talk about the
Corporate Structure this is a much more re radical fer volunteer and ttp is the faust of it and there is hostility to the basic structur of the way that economy is working. Can we talk more about trade mara because this is an issue in which both clinton and caine were on opposite sides of the issue. Thats right, theyve moved and this is the issue that donald trump says over and over again why
Bernie Sanders supporters should come to him because hes going to solve the trade problem. It units the left and the right its a populous issue that units both of them. I know its hot and i know its the first day and i know democratses are not an democrat says are not an organized party and every time
Hillary Clinton is mentioned shd is booed, thats extraordinary to me. These people are not even behold to go
Bernie Sanders theyre holding the ttp red flashy signs. Mark, how do you explain the ttp, do you see voters making that the determining reason to vote for one candidate or another . We just heard the delegate john yang was talking to, say yes i feel strongly about ttp but i i would never vote for donald trump it fueled two campaigns, dislike in trade, donald trump and
Bernie Sanders, they were both driven by that it was overpromised and under delivered. Nafta was going to be good, lift everybody up and lets be blunt. There are no 35 dollaraweek
Bureau Chiefs coming into the country and taking jobs and that was, quite frankly i think the media was out of touch on it and i think there was an elite out of touch on it and has been and all you have to do is travel through ohio, travel through michigan, travel throughni cite that are hollowed out and people who had great lives, marshall fudge who is presiding over this convention was from akron, ohio and in a place where you could put kids through high school and college and those days are gone and they might have a job at ray yo sha radio shack and now its closed. Lets talk about party unit. Ignore what youre seeing in the streets they are saying, how close is the democratic t convention to the ideal of unit . I think the most important nt thing to remember is you have e two of the most unpopular candidates, i think we have to come back to that which is even within their own party they have some higher negatives than you would suspect. Now
Hillary Clinton however is s doing much better just in terms of the way she gos viewed within her party versus the way donaldl trump is viewed within his party. So she starts in and out a better place right there, but the fact of the matter is there is still this real issue about i think its two things, one, even within her own party people dont like or trust her and the second part is what she needs to do in this o convention is tellni us who shes and what she stands for . What is this campaign about . I do not have any idea about what the message of hillary ll
Clintons Campaign is. There have been slogans, statements on signs but i dont know to get to marks point for people who are saying i feel like my life has been changed, i dont know that i can go back to where ive been, i dont feel like im part of this america, how is she going to get them in . Maybe this is something our john yang, the parapateti person on the floor . Whats your take on this
Bernie Sanders and the booing . I think were democrats and we argue and get our ideas down and thats what this campaign n has been about and we will leave here unified on thursday night. In the meantime we are having a robust conversation, snorp sanders is going to speak tonight and i think were all going to come together. I think this is a
Freight Convention getting off to i a gd start and its what a convention should be. Ld not only the host governor but one of the big three swing states in terms of the
Clinton Campaign. Pa how does this race look to you going into the fall . I think when voters go into the booth no november in november theyre going to look at the options and vote for fairness, a person who has been committed to fairness all her live and someone who has delivered policies on fairness. We need fairness, she understands that and hann committed to that and i think she is going to win. I won in pennsylvania because oe that and what i have done over the last year and a half, education funding, fair you f understand funding formula, expansion of medicaid, nondiscrimination, minimum wage proposal, ive done things that played to that fairness that addresses fairness issues that a are real and important and
Hillary Clinton believes in those things, too. What does tim c araine do to ticket in pennsylvania . I think he ads to the ticket. Look at what hes done . E he represented ordinary americans asd a lawyer. He represents all the things that this party stands for, all the things that are going to take us to victory in november take hillary to victory in november and that gets back to the fundamental issues, level
Playing Field, fairness, not just for 1 but everybody in the
United States donald trump is talking a loo about trade, an issue that you think would appeal to displaceda
Blue Collar Workers 23 in bl collar workers in western pennsylvania, how does that play to people in your state. Workers that have been displaced by trade have to be taken care of. We sanity sayyre cant say theyre on their own, they have consequences for working meshes, and weve got to address this. We have to make sure we have the benefits of trade but weve got to make sure what we have now, the unfair issues of open trade are gone and i think thats where
Hillary Clinton is strong. Governor saying fairness is going to bring
Hillary Clinton over the line, thank you very much. Thank you, john, and i guess there is nothing that would have persuaded the pennsylvania an governor not to come to the convention as we had happen in ohio where governor casik did stay away. Joining us in the campaign booth is
Campaign Manager for
Hillary Clinton, robbie mulk, its been quite a day starting with the resignation of the chair of the
Democratic Party, we have been talking about it tonight. Not exactly the start you were looking for, is it . This is the first day of the convention, and its a businessu day. Im proud of what we have accomplished in these first few hours. We had to pass our platform, it passed by anning clay makings, s there were no minority reports, we passed our rules, a
Reform Commission that the secretarys our campaign and senator
Sanders Campaign collaborated on to create. There are a lot of people on the floor that have strong feelings, its been boisterous and fun and people are expressing themselves and were excited. We have some of the prior toestv stars in our party speaking tonight so its fun to see
Hillary Clintons name booed every time its mentioned . Look this is the first night, lots of strong feelings but im confident coming out of this were going to be unified. You can imagine headlines dl tomorrow saying you got that flat form with the
Credentials Committee passed and they had d fun doing the likely nominee . I think what matters is the story were going to tell over the next four days. Were going to talk about how
Hillary Clinton has fought all her life forhi working people, e has been motivated to fight for kids and families to break down barriers to opportunity, we havent even started to tell that story essentially on the floor. Theyre going to hear from terrific speakers tonight about the economy specifically, how
Hillary Clinton is going to stand up for working families and the threat thatni donald trp presents. You just saw a video about how he makes all of his products over seas and blames other company for exporting jobs. David . Hillary clintons personal numbers are not fantastic in terms of like ability and trustworthiness but everyone who works with herer personally tele a warmer story. Could you give us an anecdote of her being nurturing, surprisingi to the public image . I would say two things. First of all, my dad unfortunately got injured late t last year and i sort of mentioned it to her at one poine and i remember 10 days later how is your dad doing and i forgot had even told her about it ask the other one is she went down to kentucky and i didnt know kn she met my brothers family, reported back to me, i saw the kids, i saw every everybody, look, this is someone who cares about kids and families and
Hillary Clinton is a work horse, not a show horse and because she doesnt brag about it people dont know about it but thats what we are focusing on here at the convention is telling that story, and talking about those accomplishments and one of the things you are going to see herc that you did not see in cleveland are every day people p getting up on the stage and talking about the differences hillary has made in their lives. Mark, question for robbie . The bounce out of convention, historically, bill clinton got a 16 bounce in 1992, donald trump surprisingly after bad reviews e from people like david brooks ro and myself, and virtually ly everyone else we knew has gotten a bounce and la times and cnn, cbs poll all have him ahead of you. Yo what kind of bounce do you expect and where will those polls be a week from now . I think youre making the important point here which is weve got to wait until we get through both conventions to maka any conjecture. I dont think anybody is going to see a 16 bounce, were not in a threeway contest like they had last time but im confidente were going to see a nice lift coming out of this convention io and i wouldnt pay too much credence i dont take too much attention to polls, but i certainly wouldnt right now. Mara . You have been working with the
Sanders Campaign to tamp down this booing, bernie sandere sent out an email, its not working, he cant control his people, why shouldnt we expect that she will be booed all four days . Its important to put in perspective, you can find one or two people these are more than one or two people. O but, again, i think its important when they stood upi the issues that matter theyve done that together and it took a lot of work between the two campaigns to get there. As we get through the next few days youre going to see these people come together and senator sanders is going to spraek a tonight and we are going to be unified, not a
Single Person on that floor wants to see donald trump as president and everybody on this floor understands the difference that
Hillary Clinton will make. Robbie, on
Weekend Television you made a connection between et the email hacking standard and russia, the big brown bear and the fact that one of our enemies or not one of our friends might be behind it and in league with donald trump. Ru you preface it by saying expertt say or others say which is what donald trump does, too. Why do you bring it up . Is this something we are going to hear more about after the convention is over . Were hearing about it now. Let me just say, one, i was shocked as i started to see the information comee together and was briefed. Fe it is shocking and disturbing and it sounds almost like fiction but what the experts are saying and im prefacing it that way because im not a
Cyber Security or international ti
Affairs Expert but what the experts are saying and this was reported on in the
New York Times and the
Washington Post is that it was russian actors who went into this and leaked them and the pattern by which this happened is typical of these russian state actors. Im not interested in making false claims and i think what we have talked about is reported and it was reported yesterday es that the fbi is looking into this so they are investigating a that the russians are perpetrating attacks. I dont want people to confuse this with rhetoric or spin its real and i think it should be important to anybody in this country that anyone should be trying to influence our election. Robbie, the manager of the
Hillary Clinton campaign for president , thank you, and we are continuing to follow this story as you just laid it out. Rachel martin, rachel . Judy ive heard you in the in the booth talking about all of this and we have too but i would say there is not so much a revolution down on the floor as there is a sort of evolution ev because if you remember earlierb in the coverage, earlier in the night there was a raucous response, the crowd was rileed up and that has started too subside and whats interesting is there is an individual ua parallel happening. You sit down with delegates, at oneonone and you talk to them about whats going on in their heads, in their hearts, immediately they launching into a diatribe, some of them, the bernie supporters launching into a diatribe on why
Hillary Clinton wasnt their pick, and
Bernie Sanders has their support but when you push them and you say if he doesnt]qc get the nomination and you are faced with a choice between hillary il clinton and donald trump what do you do . They are reluctant but they say one woman in particular says it doesnt matter who, youy vote blue she said i have far more in common with
Hillary Clinton than i will ever have with donald trump and she said the myth that there is a crossover between
Bernie Sanders supporters and po donald
Trump Supporters doesnto bear out so there is a sort of change happening at lisa among the voters that we have talked to here, still very much a tension but an emotional catharsis. Back to you. Rachel martin, thank you. There is a
Campaign Video playing and then we expect to hear from lets listen. The look obviously matters. Its like you wouldnt have your job if you werent beautiful. Fu his policies are backwards, antiwoman. Is this someone you would vote for . No, he has to be stopped ladies and gentlemen, please welcome senator kirsten we gillibrand from new york. [applause] were watching senator
Kirsten Gillibrand junior senator from the state of
New York New York and its interestingew to watch how the democrats are tackling donald g trump rather than having in speakers say lock her up and get the crowd chanting, they are showing videos where they are making fun and pointing at
Donald Trumps behaviors, they r have now run five or six of these through the course of the afternoon and the evening. No we can listen to senator
Kirsten Gillibrand of new york. Like most working parents, my husband and i schedule a lot. We are fortunate to have flexibility, but some days we still barely keep it together. The vast majority of working parents have it much tougher theyre struggling with too little time, too little money and too little support. E and washington hasnt caught up to their reality. Families today look almost nothing like they did a generation ago. Eight in ten moms work outside the home, four in ten moms are the primary or sole bread winners and many are single, thanks to equality, more children grow up with two moms or two dads. Yet today our policies are stuck in the mad men era. We are the only industrialized t nation that doesnt guarantee workers paid family leave many women cant even get a paid day off to give birth. Most parents work outside the home, yet childcare can cost as much as college tuition. Families rely on womens income but we dont have equal pay for equal work this makes no sense because we know that when families are strong, america is strong. Hillary clinton gets it. Not just because she is a working mom, and charlotte and aidans grandmother but because for her its about her core values, the idea that we have a responsibility to one another, its about who we are as a nation. Its why after law school, she could have gone to a fancy law firm but she chose to work at the
Childrens Defense Fund where she advocated for children with disabilities. Its why as americas first lady she helped create a
Health Insurance program for children so that eight million kids could get the care they need. And its why as secretary of state shese helped women and children to escape violence and poverty to attend school, support their families, and reinvest in their communities. S. And its why as president of the
United States, she will bring our workplace policies out of the dark ages and always, always put
Families First 3fb2 you see,
Hillary Clintons life,
Hillary Clintons lifes work has been defined by one question. How can we help those who need it the most . Donald trump has been defined by a very different question. How can i help myself the most . Donald trump actually stood on a debate stage and said that wages are too high hillary knows that in the richest country in the world it is unacceptable that a mom with two kids working fulltime stili lives in poverty donald trump says that when it comes to paid family leave, you have to be careful of it. Hillary knows that it is long past time to have guaranteed paid family leave donald trump thinks that women should just work harder because, and im quoting youre gonna make the same if you do as good of a job every woman in america knows that is not true hillary believes
Women Deserve equal pay for equal work the choice in this election could not be clearer. If you believe in the values ie that have always made us great, if you believe in keeping america great, then support
Hillary Clinton thank you and god bless this great nation senator
Kirsten Gillibrand oi new york who endorsed
Hillary Clinton before she announced she was running she is the one who played the woman card tonight, a mom of two kids, talked about paid family leave, played the grandmother card. Were going to expect that to be recurring throughout the week we are going to hear that throughout the week, women are some of
Hillary Clintons strongest supporters and we need to coach it that way. Senator al franken of f minnesota back on the floor. Save it for the end im al franken im al franken, minnesotan senator, and world renowned expert on right wing meglomaniacs rush limbaugh, bill owe reilly and donald trump. I got my contract in studies from
Trump University sure, i had to empty out my 401 k and take a reverse rs mortgage on my house to pay tuition, but mr. Trump or rather some people who said they once met him, convinced me it was worth it. Frankly, as a proud alum of trump u, i think we may be misunderestimating donald trump. Sure, hes scammed a lot of people, but did you know that
Trump Universitys school of ripping people off is ranked a second in the nation right behind bernie matoff university. That is no mean feet feat. And
Trump University is more e than just about bilking people, although, trust me you will get bilked. Its about learning from success experts like scott bao, mike tyson and, of course, a life size cardboard cutout of mr. Trump himself. Now, of course, trump universitt wouldnt be
Trump University rs without his business school. Their
Bankruptcy Program in particular is known throughout r the
Real Estate Investment community for its creativity. The most popular course bankruptcy 101 how to leave youo
Partners Holding the bag is taught by the cardboard cutout itself. The pride of
Trump University of course is his library, located on a shelf in a closet on the third floor of trump tower. All of many trumps best sellers are available for sale at a special rate for students, which is 10 higher than the retail a price. Clearly,
Donald Trumps enormous, dare i say, huge success as a businessman sm qualifies him to be president nt and if you believe that, ive got some delicious trump steaks to sell you ak in all seriousness, i think rather than voting for someone who has never done anything for anyone other than himself, maybe we should go who spent her entire life working to get important things done for the
American People. Ive known hillary for almost a quarter of a century. Ive never met anyone smarter, tougher, or more ready to lead uslbu forward. I am proud to call
Hillary Clinton my friend and i cant wait to call her madam he president now, were going to have a lot of fun this week. But when we wake up friday morning, there will be just 102 days left until the election. What you, yes, all of you, what you do in those 102 days could determine who wins, and i mean that literally. I won my first race for the senate by 312 votes. Theres my minnesota delegation there are people up there who contacted more than 312 people themselves and literally i would not be here. The reason i am they are each of them individually the reason i am giving this speech here and not into my bathroom mirror my friends, my friend
Paul Wellstone my friend
Paul Wellstone used to say the future belongs to those who are passionate and work hard. This week is about passion, but starting friday morning its all about work hard work now, many of you have jobs. Many of you have families. Ignore them let me tell you something kids love it when their parents arent home, they love it let me tell you
Something Else l an eightyearold kid knows how to use a microwave oven and let me tell you
Something Else, an eightyearold kid can teach a 4yearold kid to use one, too, its a scientific fact. Dont worry about your kids. They will be fine, you have worr to do. Get on those phones, knock on those doors and tell them al l franken sent you. Thank you n thats senator al franken, we came to know him on saturday da night live. We are at the top of the hour the pbs coverage, im here with my partner judy woodruff, were joined by david brooks and marcia fudge of ohio part of the gavel handing over at the beginning of the evening and the interesting thing i found representative fudge is when yoy got up there and began to speak to the audience you were at the heart of the boos and didnt look pleased bit. I dont think anybody is pleased to being booed. Dont think thats unusual. I think what i tried to convey and i think what i did convey is that i believe inatq0v1e0s10 50 close thats the kind of statement we are. Thats why they call it the swing state. Representative fudge david brooks has a question too. Howd you know that . Lets talk about your district and your part of ohio has been through a pretty serious
Economic Transformation in some ways dislocation over your life time and playing into has a more radical transformational view. Al what can
Hillary Clinton offer c your constituents to satisfy a transformation for how that can change. The won 77 of the votes in my direct. Whatever she was offering they h were buying. Ng with his proposals, etcetera she took 70 of the vote. I dont know theres more she needs to offer. We already decided shes our candidate. But what did work . I think a number of things worked. One is we have a great deal of trust in
Hillary Clinton. She spent time in the state and people got to know her and in my area, northeast ohio 45 of all the democratic votes come from northeast ohio so when you win my direct by that strong a number the odds are strong have you a good chance of winning the state of ohio. We liked her message. She gave us concrete proposals not just we ought to have a revolution or were going to have free college tuition. Everybody want that but how do you pay for it . But i think our voters are sophisticated enough to look beyond rhetoric and to look at who really has a track record because i believe through my constituents that what have you done in theha past is a good indicator for what youll do in the future. Re do you have a question . Cant you empathize or feel sympathy for the bernie supporters who came here still feeling as if they had a live challenge and when they arrived in the hall this afternoon they felt it was suddenly being turned into a coronation and everything was presumptively ve about
Hillary Clinton . I dont know why it wouldnt be about
Hillary Clinton. She won the popular vote by almost 4 million votes. She won almost every major state in this country and she had more delegates but i do sympathize and empathize because i know what its like to get into a campaign and lose and put your hopes and dreams nyfa candidate but what youre missing when the
Platform Committee met they came with a unanimous decision and bernie got 80 plus of what he wanted. I sat in the rules
Committee Meeting saturday. They are the ones who came up with the idea of
Unity Commission so i dont think they were totally disenfranchized. The people youre hearing now are the people who were not involved in the discussion and left out not by our campaign but as well as his so i have empatha for them but i think theres a time when we as americans have to be patriots and have to do what is best for the country and if our feelings are hurt i apologize for that but its my role to conduct a convention that is going to be fair, that is going to hear all sides, within some framework of order and procedure and we come out together. I believe that is what is going to happen. Represent marcia fudge who is running this convention now after the changes that happened this morning. Thank you for coming. I want to ask about the chaes. We cant go without asking you. I thought i got away. For
Debbie Wasserman schultz tobb step down. I thought it was the right thing to go when she decided to step down as dnc chair. I think it was the honorable thing to do and thought it was a distraction to the party and she is my dear friend but she had understood it was such a distraction it would consume the convention and after doing whati she has done for five and a hala year its time to go home and spend time in her own district c where she is facing a very difficult challenge. I do think it wasatq0v1e0s10 50 im part of this, im part of the bubble. We see a group ofpeople committed to politics they dont have to make up tehri mind today saying she felt sorry f delegates who lost and she was working to say that. Theres a height cultural difference between the two. Like the trump conventions theres a lot of firsttimers and theyre not used how the game is played and reject how the game is played so thats why theyre booing and why the trump people were raucous in their own way. Theyre not institutional and we have two conventions that unscripted. We have deep structural changes in the economy and a country through a moral crisis and what are we about are we a community anymore and its shown up on the floor of both places. What does it mean well see this week . Ill tell you exactly what it means. Birds have to fly, fish have to swing, pundits have to predict. You say the rancor and vitriol d is out of the room and when al made his pitch i think it was a hissy fit to a great degree. Understandably. I think his point is a persuasive one but i think this is not going to be a civil war in armed camp. Youre saying it was a clinical decision to let them get it out of their system and thats whats happened and what worked. I know theres been efforts on both sides. The sanders people and
Bernie Sandersnr himself i really d think that its a real effort and there are pockets. Theres no question but i thought al franken did it well. I thought he did as well as a anybody has done at any convention so far. Theory or prognostication and go down to the floor to
Rachel Martin whos been talking to t some delegates and at the podium. Rachel are you learning . We have been taking the emotional temperature of the room and it has shifted. We heard senator al franken come out. He got a rousing round of applause. I would venture to say the largest round of applause weve seen all night and he was funny. Hes al franken of snl. All of a sudden people lightened up and dropped their shoulders a little bit and he was able to shift things in the room and after al franken a very emotional moving address by
Anastasia Somoza and the girl with a disability from an immigrant background who gave an impassioned message on why she supports
Hillary Clinton and it was quiet and people were paying attention and that had not been the case. We also saw someone unclear from the dnc and he was urging people to keep their signs down in anticipation of an address by center cory booker from new jersey and well go back to the sage for
Sara Silverman. Ma thank you,
Rachel Martin and the return of al franken. I see humor coming. Lets listen. St remember me . Im senator al franken and in the past year ive been hashtagged im with her. And im
Sara Silverman and this past year ive been feeling the bern. Relax, i put cream on it. What did you say . I said i put some cream on it. You see saras the comedienne so she gets the joke and im the politician now and i get to do whats known as an ask but trust me its a good ask. You see if you go to hillary i clinton. Com before midnight tonight and join the team you can be not just hashtag im with her in spirit but hashtag im with her literally as if you can win a trip to philadelphia to be here on thursday night when hilary accepts the nomination. See, sarah. Thats more fun than getting the joke. While were on the subject can i make my speech now . Absolutely. El thank you. Al, get out of my frame. As some of you may know i support
Bernie Sanders and the s movement behind him. And bernies already succeeded in so many ways. He proved that
Citizens United is in fact in the a
Necessary Evil and by the way,
Citizens United isnt that such is a beautiful name that means billionaires buying politicians . Good lord. Rails against the very spirit of our democracy. And im very glad that hilary has vowed to overturn it. Not only did bernie wake us up, he made us understand what is possible and what we deserve. You know my shrink said we dont get what we want we get what we think we deserve and bernie showed us that all of americas citizens deserve
Quality Health care and education not just the wealthy elite. I know, it sounds so obvious. You wouldnt agree with that but yet its not whats been happening. You know, i happen to believe the crazy notion that people who may be werent born with the same opportunities as you and me should be given the same opportunities as you and me. And all it takes to accomplish this is everyone. Yo its all of us. Orni as a pretty woman once sai it takes a village. This democratic primary was exemplary. No comments about the size of candidates hands or how much they sweats or if they go to t bathroom. Inside secret, they do. Its for thirdgraders. Come on, its major arrested
D Development stuff. Im still emotionally 4 and calling people names from my golden crusted sand box because i lacked human touch. But i digress. Hilary heard the passion of the people. The people behind bernie and brought those passions into the partys platform and that, that is the processatq0v1e0s10 50 continue to be inspired and move to action by the ideals setforth by bernie who will never stop fighting for us. I am proud to be a part of bernies movement and part of that movement is making sure
Hillary Clinton is our next president of the
United States. 0 now we have to stretch. I have so much i want to say. Well, ok, we you know listen to that. Listen to what you did. This is a comedienne. Thank god they can fix this t in post. You know, we have been i want to thank you because sarah and i have been asked to stretch tc because we are about do introduce someone that were both huge fans of. How are we doing guys . Are we close . What i love about both of us being here its like we are a bridge. A bridge. How do you figure that . Al franken of minnesota appearing on stage with a hilary supporter with the comedienne
Sarah Silverman who is a bernie supporter and theyre both stretching for time now leading up to the next musical act well tell you about and just did an effective takedown in donald o trump in saying mr. Paul simon has come around to supporting
Hillary Clinton but in theatq0v1e0s10 50 when youre weary feeling strong when tears are in your eyes i would dry them off im on your side when times get rough when friends cant just be found like a bridge over troubled waters i will lay me downe like a bridge over troubled waters i will lay me down when youre down and out when youre on the streets when evening falls so hard i will comfort you i will comfort you ill take your heart when darkness comes and pain is all around just like a bridge over troubled waters i will lay me down like a bridge over troubled watersri sail on sail on by youre time has come to shine and all your dreams are see how they shine if you need a friend ill sail right behind like a bridge over troubled waters i will lay me down i will ease your mind like a bridge over troubled waters cheers and applause paul simon and the legendary simon and garfunkel singing bridge over troubled water which in a room like tonight where there is been so much fracturedness, everyone holding hands. Woodruff i think he served as a bridge over troubled water, leading into simons performance was a raw coz reaction,
Sarah Silverman saying to the diehard bernie fans youre ridiculous, which only made them angrier. Well take a station break. News pbs and npr for the democrati
Democratic National coc in philadelphia. P back in a minute. We organized something called the mississippi freedomth
Democratic Party. Mrs. Haimer, this brave, courageous, black woman, testified before a committee and she told her story, how she had been h beaten, how she had been arrested. 18 of us traveled 26 miles to the county courthouse in independencindianola to try to. We were met by policemen. It was soce powerful that president
Lyndon Johnson called a press conference while she was testifying to get help off of tv. Seen anything like it, but what happened there created an environment for thee
Democratic Party to reform itself. Woodruff and were back now for our special npr pbs newshour coverage of theof
Democratic National conventionti in philadelphia, and i have to say what we just witnessed tn ifill and youre judy woodruff. Woodruff im judy woodruff. Ifill im gwen ifill. I woodruff david brooks, mark shields, amy walter, ron elving of npr. Paul simon calmed the waters when he sang bridge over troubled waters, but to have al frank and mark shields come up with a young comedienne,
Sarah Silverman, and try to puncture some of the get some of the air out of the room in terms of the tension, the angst and anger. Instead, i think she got those
Bernie Sanders people riled up. I dont think so. I think this program, somebodys going to write a story after reporting it, was expertly and psych lodge cry psychologically programmed. I think its worked very, very well. That
Sarah Silverman, thats lucky thats all she got out of her. Ifill i ran into paul simon myself last night. He said he was singing that song to have exactly that outcome. So theres the reporting for you. Didnt they miss a stitch . Shouldnt garfunkel have walked out . Ifill lets watch eva long longoria from desperate housewives. This is election is very personal for me. I am from a small town in south texas, and if you know your history, texas used to be part of mexico. Now, im ninth generation american. My family never crossed a border. The border crossed us. cheering so when donald trump calls us criminals and rapists, hes insultings american families. My father is not a criminal or rapist. In fact, hes a
United States veteran. cheers and applause when trump cruelly mocked the disabled reporter, he was also mocking my special needs sister lisa and many like her. When he said that a wife who works is a very dangerous thing, he not only insulted me, he insulted my mother, who worked as a special
Education Teacher for 30 years, raised four children while being a wife. cheers and applause you know, i believe in the candidate who believes in all of us, and that candidate is
Hillary Clinton. cheers and applause hillary has spent her whole life fighting for all americans in healthcare reform to equal pay for women to gun safety to protecting the economy. She is the most qualified president ial candidate ever. Shes been fighting for us for decades and now its time we fight for her. Im proud to be in that fight and proud to be here to introduce my dear friend cory booker. But before we do, i want you to take a look at your convention, a latino from south texas is introducing the first black senator from new jersey wh and e will nominate the first woman candidate for the president of the
United States cheers and applause pretty great. So guess what, donald . Turns out america is pretty great, already. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome senator cory booker. cheers and applause hello, philadelphia cheers and applause thank you thank you thank you very much thank you thank you thank you very much b 240 years ago, our forefathers gathered innv this very city ana they declared before the world that we would be a free and independent nation. Today, we gather again here in this city, in this city of brotherly love to reaffirm our values before our nation and the whole world. Our purpose is not to start a great nation but to ensure that we continue in the best of our tradition and with humble homage to generations of patriots before, we put forth two
Great Americans for nominees for president and
Vice President ,
Hillary Clinton and tim kaine cheers and applause now, looking back to our history, looking back to our history, our
Founding Fathers put forth founding documents that were include genius. But the founding documents werent genius because they were perfect. They were saddled with the imperfections and even the bigotry of the past. Native americans were referred to as savages. Black americans were fractions of human beings, and women were not mentioned at all. But those facts and ugly parts of our history dont distract from our nations greatness. In fact, i believe we are an even greater nation not because we started perfect, but because every generation has successfully labored to make us a more perfect union. cheers and applause generations of heroic americans have made our nation more inclusive, more expansive and more just. Our nation wasnt founded because we all look alike or prayed alike or descended from the same family tree, for our founders in their genius in this h our oldest constitutional democracy on the planet earth, they put forth the idea that all are created equal, that we have inalienable rights, and im so proud it was on this faithful foundation that we built a great nation and today, no matter who you are, rich or poor, asian or white, man or woman, gay or straight, any religion or none at all, you are entitled to the full rights and responsibilities of citizenship. cheers and applause in this city, our founders put forth a declaration of independence, but let me tell you, they also made an historic declaration of interdependence. They knew that if this country was to survive and thrive, we had to make an unusual and extraordinary commitment to each other. It were and value the ideals of individualism and selfreliance, but rugged individualism didnt defeat the british, it didnt get us to the moon, it didnt build our nations highways. Rugged individualism didnt map the human genome. We did that together. cheers and applause and, so, this is the high call of patriotism. Patriotism is love of country, but you cant love your country without loving your countrymen and your countrywomen. cheers and applause now, we dont always have to agree, but we must be there for each other, we must empower each other, we must find the
Common Ground and we must build bridges across our differences to pursue the common good. Let me tell you, we cannot devolve into a nation where our highest aspirations are that we just tolerate each other. We are not called to be a nation of tolerance. We are called to be a nation of love. cheers and applause thats why that last line of the declaration of independence says it so clearly, it says that we must to make this nation work, we must mutually pledge to each other our lives and fortunes and sacred honor. Tolerance is the wrong way. Tolerance says im just going to stomach your right to be different, that if you disappear from the face of the earth, im no better or worse off, but love knows that every american has worth and value, that no matter what their background, race, religion or sexual o orientatio, love recognizes that we need each other, that we as a nation are better together, that when we are divided we are weak and decline, yet when we are united, we are strong. When we are indivisible, we are invincible. This is the understanding of love thats embodied in one of my favorite sayings. Its an african saying that says, if you want to go fast, go alone. But if you want to go far, go together. cheers and applause this is the reason why i am so motivated in this election, because i believe this election is a referendum on who best embodies the leadership we need to go far together. Donald trump is not that leader. Weve watched him try to get laughs at other peoples expense, try to incite fear at a time we need to inspire courage, try to rise in the polls by dragging our
National Conversation into the gutter. Weve watched him mo cruelly mock weve watched him cruelly mock a journalists disability, weve watch him say my
Senate Colleague was not a war hero because he was captured, trump said i dont like people who got captured. Would he say that to p. O. W. S from world war two, vietnam, to the brave women in iraq and afghanistan right now risking capture or worse . Thats not the commanderinchief. Weve watched donald trump paint with a broad, divisive brush saying mexican immigrants who came to build a better life in america are, in his words, bringing crime, theyre bringing drugs. He called many of them rapists. He said that an indianaborn federal judge cant be trusted to do his job because of his mexican ancestry, a statement that his fellow republicans have described as racist. booing weve watched donald trump, our children, daughters, nieces and grandkids have watched donald trump and called him calling women degrading and demeaning names dogs, fat pigs, disgusting animal. It is a twisted hypocrisy when he treats other women in a manner he would never ever accept from another man speaking about his daughters or his wife. cheers and applause in this great nation where our founders put a fundamental principle forward of religious freedom, he says ban all muslims, dont let certain people into our america because of how they pray. Now, i take particular interest in the fact trump says he would run our country like hes run h his businesses. Well, im from jersey. cheers and applause and im from the great garden state and weve seen how he leads in atlantic city. He got rich while his companies declared multiple bankruptcies, without remorse, even though people got hurt and lost jobs by his failures, he bragged and said, quote, the money i took out was incredible. Yes, he took out cash, but he stiffed contractors, small businesses, refusing to pay them for the work that they have done. We in america have seen enough of a handful of people growing rich at a cost of a nation sending them into crisis. America at our best we stand up to bullies and we fight those who seek to demean and degrade other americans. In times of crisis, we dont abandon our values, we double down on them. Even amidst the crisis of the civil war, lincoln stood up and called out to all of our country saying with malice towards none and
Charity Towards all. This is our history. This is the history that i was taught. My parents never wanted my brother and i to get too heady, gratitude was our gravity. They reminded my brother and i our blessings sprang from countless americans who showed extraordinary acts of kindness, decency and love. People who struggled and sweat and bled for our rights, people to paid the ultimate price for the freedoms we all enjoy. I was told that we cant pay those americans back for your colossal acts of service, but we have an obligation to pay it forward to others through our service and our sacrifices. cheers and applause i support woodruff senator cory booker from jersey. As hes speaking to an audience full of a lot of current or former stars, bill clinton is there in the family booth tonight sitting with current pa senator bob casey, with weve seen susan sur randan and danny glover, the actors who are big
Bernie Sanders fans and supporters, and weve also seen people like rosie perez. The interesting thing, mark shields, is that we hear cory booker talking about what weve seen a lot of times in the hall tonight, love. They seem to be making the point of happiness and upbeatness. Contrasting rugged or isolated individualism from community, and very persuasive speech for our community cory booker is making. I would point out a little ironic history and that is bill clinton, former president sitting with bob casey, jr. , and 24 years ago in new york,
Madison Square garden,
Bob Casey Casey bob casey, sr. , his father, liberal governor from pennsylvania was denied to speak at the convention because he was prolife. Woodruff when you were talking, mark, we were showing a picture in this big auditorium of
Bernie Sanders holding looks like one of his granddaughters listening quietly to cory booker. Amy walter, is this a transition of the democrats . There is clearly mocking of donald trump but there is also an appeal to get together. You know, when you talk to democrats, there are two themes going on, especially folks in the
Clinton Campaign believe the stronger together theme, this idea a diverse nation, a nation working together is going to have much more resonance in a country thats much more diverse than its ever been. I talked to some other democrats, though, who arent on the campaign and theyre a little bit nervous. They said, you know, maybe we should just be stronger and that they worry that the violence and the almost daily, weekly terrorist moments are having an impact and that democrats have to be able to do both things. You can be loving and embracing and accept diversity but you also, at the core, your president needs to look strong and resolute and look like somebody that has a very clear plan for taking on what is clearly a very dangerous world. Woodruff i want to go back to
Bernie Sanders sitting quietly not in the spotlight, even though his candidacy has gotten the flo floor rocking and rolling. He has a speed limit. Shouldnt he be sequestered backstage . I would think someone who had the speech of their life coming up, they would want to be backstage instead of being out here listens to the speakers and ministering to his grandchildren. Ifill maybe this is his big night of the week. It is. If the evening is going to be healing or a night when the
Democratic Party came apart for a period of time, what is it going to look like compared to the
Republican Conventions first night, third night. Thats whats at stake, its up to him. Woodruff i think its not the speech
Bernie Sanders would have liked to have given tonight. He really would have breferred, david brooks preferred, david brooks, this to be the week he would be giving the acceptance speech, nominated for president. Did he know that wouldnt happen . Probably. Hes not a guy who evolves too much. The core
Corey Cory Booker spee, democrats have a tendency to identify every problem as economic. But the nation is in a crisis. Cory booker had a rift on how tolerance is not enough. Tolerance means you and i can live in society but i dont have to care about you at all. And he contrasted it with love and need, that i need you to be part of my life. That is actually a democratic vision of community and its not just economic. I dont think that were facing an economic crisis. Our g. D. P. Doesnt explain the anger out there now. Ifill did you hear anything that compares to the discussion about tolerance and love and support at the convention we attended last week . Im not sure i heard that. Donald trump understands some version of
National Identity about community cohenges that is basically the essence of his message and the antiimmigration. For
Bernie Sanders, this is the first night of the first
Democratic Convention hes ever attended so hes taking it in. Woodruff lets point out hes not a democrat. Hes never been to a
Democratic Convention before. So i just want to return to amys point quickly, and that is i think with each succeeding i. S. I. S. Attack, with each succeeding japanese today, the knife attack in japan and the 18 killed, i just think there is an unease in the country, and the law anlaw and order candidates positions are strengthened in such times and i think that has to be a concern for this hall and this nation. Ifill we are seeing the end, now maybe not quite the end of cory bookers speech but who do we have on the floor . Rachel martin is on the podium, taking in what is seeming to be as the evening goes on a more and more unified crowd. Am i making that up, rachel . Yeah, gwen, i think we can say that. In this moment cory booker is wrapping up his speech and giving the refrain we will rise and the crowd is responding with signs that say rise together. So this is his job at this moment is to kind of lay the table for the main events which are coming up. We are going to be hearing from some very important speakers tonight. We are going to be hearing from
Elizabeth Warren, senator from massachusetts and leader of the progressive wing of the
Democratic Party. Her voice will be important as a
Unifying Force in this arena tonight. Well also hear from
Bernie Sanders himself. It will be his job to reach out to his supporters, many of home who say, you know what, bernie, this is bigger than you. This is about a revolution that you started, but hes going to try to bring them under the tent and to try to get their support for
Hillary Clinton, and were going to hear from the first
Lady Michelle obama. Were already seeing up in the rafters signs that say michelle, michelle. So a lot of people anticipating that address, those remarks from the first lady. Back to you. Woodruff as the podium as we listen to the waning moments of cory bookers speech, we saw bill clinton cheering him on from looks like a v. I. P. Box. This arena is, together, the signs say rise together, some say stronger together, which is
Hillary Clintons slogan, if you will. Ifill lets listen for a second. And together with
Hillary Clinton as our president , america, we will rise
God Bless America let us rise together
God Bless America cheers and applause ifill that is the first time all night long the first time all night long, judy, ive heard this crowd chant together in unison excited about a single thing together. Thats not easy to do with this crowd where there are clearly pockets of bernie lovers, including we spotted one still going strong at the beginning of cory bookers remarks but did seem to fade away. Heres one of those videos where this one is called trump exposed. This is the democrats way of looking at what they believe are
Donald Trumps vulnerabilities. Informed me the command
Sergeant Major
Jonathan Langford had died. I received money to take care of me and my son. I needed to be wise. When your spouse dies and decisions have to be made, it can be paralyzing because you dont want to make a mistake. At
Trump University, its all about success. Its going to happen to you. One of the things that drew me to this program was that donald trump himself who is already successful is going to teach other people how to be successful as he is. It was a classic bait and switch scheme starting with the fact it was not a university. During the initial free seminar they will tell you they can help you with business. There was a 35,000 package offered. They preyed on people, told them they could make a lot of money in the
Real Estate Market and told them to leverage their savings to do it. I knew it was not what i signed up for in a week. I called the person who was supposed to be mentoring me and got no help whatsoever. Many instructors or mentors had no experience buying and selling real estate. One man testified the focus was on selling. Even to single mothers and children who need money for food. This mistake is embarrassing. Im a single mom, widow, i have a kid who depends on me. I believe donald trump built his empire not by treating people respectfully. I cant see him helping anyone but himself. Woodruff this is the video were about to see and were hear from
Cheryl Lankford whose husband died in iraq. Well take a break and be back with our special coverage. Sreenivasan im
Hari Sreenivasan in washington with an update of the nonconvention news. At least 19 killed and 20 wounded in a knife attack in japan. The countrys worst mass killing in generations. Police say it happened at a facility for the disabled in a town outside tokyo. National broadcaster n. H. K. Reports the suspect is a former employee at the facility. He turned himself in after the attack. Most of the 20,000 evacuees from a wildfire north of los angeles are being allowed to return home. The blaze has burned noorn 50 square miles since friday destroying at least 18 homes so far. Flames driven by winds swept through rugged uphill terrain. Nearly 3,000 firefighters had been on the line but said progress with was slow. Basketball legend
Michael Jordan pledged 2 million to help mend relations between police and communities. Hari sreenivasan, back to gwen and judy in philadelphia. Woodruff and if youre just going us, this is special live coverage of the
Democratic National convention from npr and the pbs newshour. Im judy woodruff. Ifill and im gwen ifill. Were joined by
Domenico Montanaro of npr, mark shields and david brooks and amy walter. Lets go back to the floor we are going to the floor to listen to
Cheryl Lankford who is president of the local chapter of gold star wives she is telling the story how she used a 35,000
Insurance Payment to go to
Trump University. I signed up for
Trump University because i thought i could learn something from him, but then he decided to make himself even richer. By cheating working people who had nothing to spare. What kind of man does that . Its not easy for me to get up here and tell my story. For a long time i didnt tell anybody, not even my family or my friends. But im here because america deserves to know the truth. This election isnt about democrats versus republican, its about right versus wrong, its about someone who helps ordinary people no matter what it takes versus someone who helps himself no matter who it hurts. Donald trump made big promises about
Trump University, and i was fooled into believing him. Now, hes making big promises about america. Please dont make that same mistake. That was
Cheryl Lankford speaking about
Trump University. Were looking forward this hour to hearing some big democratic names including
Elizabeth Warren of massachusetts and
Michelle Obama, the first lady, here is the video introducing her now, produced by j. J. Abrahms. She is funny, she likes kids and im a kid i obviously have to thank my wife
Michelle Obama who has spent much of her life focused on service. Mish gets out the help to move instead of sitting on the couch. She is definitely one of my favorite lirs ladies, probably first or second out of three. We know that our journey is far from finished. It starts with each of us taking responsibility for ourselves and our families. I think her being first lady was important, she is someone we can look up to. First lady is stronger, happy, independent. Young people are hope and she gives us hope and gives me hope personally she should be proud of how she treats the country because days like this make me think of my own daughters so for give me if i get a little teary. I want to publicly thank the first lady for being an inspiration to communities here in the
United States and around the world. She is not just a woman standing next to a man. She is making her own place in history. If she were here right now i would probably like freak out and i would tell her you did great. I would tell her thank you for looking out for me. Thank you for making this country a better place ladies and gentlemen, please welcome first lady,
Michelle Obama. [applause] the crowd is holding up a sea of signs that says michelle as the first lady makes her way to the podium, probably the warmest response that any speaker tonight has seen. This convention has people in bright
Yellow Jackets that handout signs just before the speaker and the entire arena from top to bottom becomes a sea of purple michelle signs waving. Thank you so much you know its hard to believe when i first came to this convention i thought my husband should be president remember how i told you about his character and convictions, his decency and his grace, the traits that we have seen every day that he has served our country in the white house. I also told you about our daughters, how they are the heart of our hearts, the center of our world and during our time in the white house weve had the joy of watching them grow from bubbly little girls into poised young women. A journey that started soon after we arrived in washington. When they setoff for their first day at their new school i will never forget that winter morning as i watched our girls just 7 and 10 years old pile into those black suvs with all those big men with guns and i saw their little faces pressed up gibbs the against the window and the only thing i could think was, what have we done . Because at that moment i realized that our time in the white house would form the foundation for who they would become and how well we managed this experience could truly make or break them. That is what barak and i think about every day as we try to guide and protect our girls through the challenges of this unusual life in the spotlight. How we urge them to ignore those who question their fathers sit zen ship or faith. How we insist that the hateful language they hear from public figures on tv does not represent the true spirit of this country. How we explain what someone is cruel or acts like a bully you dont stoop to their level. Our motto is when they go low, we go high with every word we utter, with every action we take we know our kids are watching us. We as parents are their most
Important Role models and let me tell you, barack and i take that same approach to our jobs as president and first lady because we know our words and actions matter not just to our girls but the children across this country. Kids who tell us, i saw you on tv, i wrote a report on you for school kids like the little black boy who looked up at my husband, his eyes wide with hope and he wondered, is my hair like yours . And make no mistake about it, this november when we go to the polls, that is what we are deciding. Not democrat or republican, not left or right, no, in this election and every election its about who will have the power to shape our children for the next four or eight years of their lives and i am here tonight because in this election there is only one person who i trust with that responsibility, only one person who i believe is truly qualified to be president of the
United States and that is our friend,
Hillary Clinton thats right i trust hillary to lead this country because ive seen her lifelong devotion to our nations children, not just her own daughter who she has raised to perfection but every child who needs a champion, kids who take the long way to school to avoid the gangs, kids who wonder how they will every afford college, kids whose parents dont speak a word of english but dream of a better life, kids who look to us to determine who and what they can be. You see, hillary has spent decades doing the relentless, thankless work to actually make a difference in their lives. Advocating for kids with disabilities as a young lawyer, fighting for childrens healthcare as first lady and for
Quality Childcare in the senate. And when she didnt win the nomination eight years ago, she didnt get angry or disillusioned. Hillary did not pawning and go home, because as a true public servant, hillary knows that this is so much bigger than her own desires and disappointments. So she proudly stepped up to serve our country once again as secretary of state, traveling the globe to keep our kids safe. Look, there were plenty of moments when hillary could have decided thtsdz work was too hard, that the price of
Public Service was too high, that she was tired of being picked apart for how she looks or how she talked or even how she laughed, but here is the thing. What i admire most about hillary is that she nerve buckles under pressure. She never takes the easy way out and
Hillary Clinton has never quit on anything in her life when i think about the kind of president that i want for my girls and all of our children, thats what i want i want someone with the proven strength to persevere, someone who knows this job and takes it seriously, someone who understands that the issues a president faces are not black and white and cant be boiled down to nr140 characters, no, because because when you have the
Nuclear Codes at our fingertips and the military in your command you cant make snap decisions. You cant have a thin skin or a tendency to lash out. You need to be steady and measured and well informed. ni i want a president with a record of
Public Service, someone whose lifes work shows our children that we dont chase fame and fortuneco for ourselves, we fig to give everyone a chance to succeed. And we give back, even when we are struggling ourselves because we know that there is always one worse off and there but for the grace of god go i. I want a president who will teach ournr children that everye in this country matters. A president who truly believes in the vision that our founders put forth all those years ago that we are all created equal each of the loved part of the
Great American story. And when crisis hits, we dont turn against each other, no, we listen to each other. We lean on each other, because we are always stronger together and i am here tonight because i know that that is the kind of president that
Hillary Clinton will be and thats why in this election, im with her. You see, hillary understands that the president is about one thing and one thing only, its about leaving
Something Better for our kids. Thats how weve always moved this country forward by all of us coming together on behalf of our children. Folks who volunteer to coach that team, to teach that sunday school class because they know it takes a village. Heros, f every color and creed and wear a ube form to keep fastened down those blessings of liberty,
Police Officers and protesters in dallas who all desperately want to keep our children safe people who lined up in orlando to donate blood because it could have been their son or daughter in that club leaders like tim caine who show our kids what decency and devotion look like. Leaders like
Hillary Clinton who has the guts and the grace to keep coming back and putting those cracks in that highest and hardest
Glass Ceiling until she finally breaks through lifting all of us along with her. That is the story of this country the story that has brought me to the stage tonight. The story of generations of people who felt the lash of bondage, the shame of serve to youed, the sting of segregation, but who kept on striving and hoping and doing what needed to be done so that today i wake up every morning in a house that was built by slaves and i watch my daughters, two beatuiful, intelligent black young women playing with their dog on the white house lawn. And because of
Hillary Clinton, my daughters and all of our son and daughters, now take for granted that a woman can be president of the
United States. So dont let anyone ever tell you that this country isnt great, that somehow we need to make it great again because this right now is the greatest country on earth and as my daughters prepare to set out into the world, i want a leader who is worthy of that truth, a leader who is worthy of my girls promise and all our kids promise, a leader who will be guided every day by the love and hope and impossibly big dreams that we all have for our children. So in this election, we cannot sit back and hope that everything works out for the best we cannot afford to be tired or frustrated or cynical no, hear me between now and november, we need to do what we did eight years ago and four years ago we need to knock on every door, we need to get out every vote we need to pour every last ounce of our passion and our strength and our love for this country into electing
Hillary Clinton as president of the
United States of america so lets get to work thank you all god bless. Michelle obama the first lady of the
United States bringing the house down with one memorandum rabble line after another, saying just a moment ago, dont let anyone ever tell you this country isnt great it is the greatest country in the world. We cannot aforked to be complacent or cynical. By the time all the eye balls were on this stage especially after 10 00,
Michelle Obama had this place rocking as one. Weve seen the arc of the eerngs david brooks, all we were talking about was how many people were booing the name
Hillary Clinton and weve just heard a stirring speech for
Hillary Clinton. Its been the best speech of the year so far for these conventions. This was a speech of uplift spoken by a mom and two key things, the presidency is for grownup and secondly what affect will donald trump have on our kids thats been the strongest ad so far this year. And making clear that her daughters are now young women. And breaking the
Glass Ceiling and reminding people how historical this is im also reminded of the speech bill clinton gave for barack obama and i would say the clintons are paying it back. I would say there is history between
Michelle Obama and
Hillary Clinton and it was a generous speech and i think casting it about the children is central to this campaigns message and
Opening Nightco we have had history made the
Opening Night in 2016 began with the words
Michelle Obama. Domenico montanaro . The strife and everything we have been covering all day, this was the first speech that was able to pull all of those fractions together and they listened to
Michelle Obama, this is somebody with twothirds favor ability rating with people across the country. She was able to hit all the notes that she wanted to tonight. We are listening to congressman joseph p. Kennedy, iii from massachusetts, introducing
Elizabeth Warren, lets listen to this. Yeah. And she believed in the law. Not as an abstraction but as a living force with the power to make life better or worse. She taught us that its not in textbooks but in a society where wages have not budgeted in forty years, for two and a half million children who are homes, that we can expect one in three black men to go to prison. Our laws have human consequences. That fact fueled a
Law School Professors to take on this countrys most entrenched financial interests and brought a middle class person back to the senate see the and led a firstterm u. S. Senator to become our governments gut check in a sea of power and privilege ledge, senator warren is an anchor for the voiceless and the fact timmized victimized. She has more from all of us because she believes deeply in each of us. That faith in her country and in the
American People is the foundation of our
Democratic Party. It echos through this arena tonight and through every classroom and living room and hearing room that senator
Elizabeth Warren has every touched. Ladies and gentlemen it is my honor to introduce to you your senator, my senator, our senator, senator
Elizabeth Warren. Senator
Elizabeth Warren embracing joseph p. Kennedy, iii. A lot of speculation about this woman during this campaign year, whether she was going to run, what was she going to do . nr here she is having endorsed
Hillary Clinton. Thank you thank you, joe, and thank you massachusetts for the great honor of serving as your senator. Thank you what a night wow
Michelle Obama . Cory booker . And we still have bernie coming up bernie reminds us what democrats fight for every day. Thank you, bernie thank you now, we are here tonight because america faces a choice. The choice of a new president. On onenr sideco is a man who inherited a fortune from his father and kept it going by cheating people, by skipping out on debts, a man who has never sacrificed anything for anyone. A man who cares only for himself, every minute of every day. On the other side is one of the smartest, toughest, most tenacious people on this planet, a woman who fights for children, for women, for healthcare, for human rights. A woman who fights for all of us and who is
Strong Enough to win those fights were here today because our choice is
Hillary Clinton im with hillary im with hillary im with hillary. You know, for me, this choice is personal. Its about who we are as a people, its about who kind of a country we want to be. I grew up in oklahoma. My daddy ended up as a
Maintenance Man and my mom worked minimum wage job at sears. My three blowers served in the military, the oldest served 288 combat missions in vietnam, the second worked instruction and the third started his own small business. Me, i got married at 19, graduated from a
Community College in texas that cost 50 a semester. The way i see it, im a janitors daughter who became a
Public School teacher, a professor and a
United States senator, america is truly a country of opportunity truly i am deeply grateful to that america. I believe in that america. But im worried. Im worried that my story is lost in the past, worried that opportunity is slipping away for people who work hard and play to the rules. Look around americans bust their tails, some working two or three jobs but wages stay flat. Meanwhile the basic costs of making it from monthtomonth keep going up, housing, childcare, costs are out of sight, young people are getting crushed by
Student Loans, working people are in debt, seniors cant stretch a
Social Security check to cover the basics and even families who are okay today worry it could all fall apart tomorrow. This is not right it is not and here is the thing america isnt going broke the stock market and breaking records, corporate profits are at alltime highs, ceos make tens of millions of dollars. There is lots of wealth in america but it isnt trickling down to hardworking families like yours. Does anyone here have a problem with that . I do too people get it. The system is rigged. You know, socalled experts claim america is in trouble because both
Political Parties in washington refuse to compromise, gridlock, that is just flat wrong. Washington works great for those at the top when giant companies wanted more tax loopholes, washington got it done, when huge
Energy Companies wanted to tear up our environment, washington got it done, when enormous wall street banks wanted regulatory loopholes, washington got it done, no gridlock there but try to do something, anything for working people and you will have a fight on your hands democrats have taken on those fights, thats what we do democrats fought to get
Health Insurance for more americans, democrats fought for a strong
Consumer Agency so big banks cant cheat people. We fought, we won, and we improved the lives of millions of nipeople. Thank you, barack obama yes, we won, but republicans and lobbyists battled us every step of the way five years later, that
Consumer Agency has returned 11 billion to families who were cheated. And republicans . Theyre still trying to kill it now look, im not someone who thinks that republicans are always right and democrats are always right, there is enough blame to go around but there is a huge difference between people fighting for a level
Playing Field and the people fighting to keep the system rigged. Look at
Congress Since the republicans took over. Democrats proposed refinancing
Student Loans and republicans . They said no democrats proposed ending tax breaks for corporations that shipped jobs overseas and republicans . They said no democrats proposed raising minimum wage and republicans . They said no soto every republican in congress who said no, this november, the
American People are coming for you and where was donald trump . In all of these fights . Not once did he lift a finger to help working people and why would he . His whole life has been about taking advantage of that rigged system. Time after time he prayed on working people, people in debt, people who had fallen on hard times. Hes conned them, dwighted them and defrauded them and ripped them off. Look at his history . Donald trump said he was excited for the 2008 housing crash that devastatedco millions of americ families because he thought it would help him scoop up for real estate on the cheap. Donald trump set up a
Fake University to make money by cheating people and taking their lifes savings. Donald trump goes on and on and on about being a successful businessman, but eave filed business bankruptcy six times, always to protect his own money and stick the investors and contractors with the bill. Donald trump hired plumbers and painters and construction workers to do hard labor for his businesses then he told them to take only a fraction of what he odor fight his lawyers in court for years so what kind of a man acts like this . What kind of a man roots for an economic crash that caused millions of people their jobs, their homes, their life savings . What kind of a man cheats students, cheats investors, cheats workers . Ill tell what you kind of a man. A man who must never be president of the
United States never and weve got the leaders to make it happen
Hillary Clinton and tim caine, theyre going to make it happen donald trump knows that the
American People are angry, a fact so obvious he can see it from the top of the trump tower. So now, he is insisting that he and he alone can fix the rigged system last week donald trump spoke for more than an hour on the biggest stage hes every had, but other than talking about building a stupid wall which will never get built, other than that wall did you hear any actual ideas . Did you hear even one solid proposal from trump for increasing income or improving your kids education . Orccreating even one, single, goodpaying job . Lets face it. Donald trump has no real plans for jobs or for college kids or for seniors. No plans to make anything great for anyone except rich guys like donald trump. Just look at his ideas. Donald trump wants to get rid of the federal minimum wage. Donald trump wants to roll back financial regulations and turn wall street loose to wreck or economy again. And donald trump has a tax plan to give multi millionaires and billionaires like himself an average tax cut of 1. 3 million a year. You know, youre struggling to put your kids through college and donald trump thinks he needs a
Million Dollar tax break . Trumps entire campaign is just one more late night trump infomercial. Hand over your money juror jobs and the great trump hot care machine will reveal all the answers and for one low price he will even throw in a goofy hat and here is the really ugly underside to his pitch, trump thinks he can win votes by fanning the flames of fear and hatred, by turning neighbor against neighbor, by persuading you that the real problem in america is your fellow americans, people who dont look like you or dont talk like you or dont worship like you. He even picked a
Vice President famous for trying to make it legal to openly discriminate against gays and lesbians. Thats
Donald Trumps america, an america of fear and hate, an america where we all break part, whitesnr against blacks and latinos, straight against gay, christians against juss, everyone against everyone, race, religion, heritage, gender the more factions the better. But ask yourself this kohn when white workers in ohio are pitted against white workers in
North Carolina or latino workers in florida who really benefits . Divide and conquer is an old story in america. Dr. Martin luther king knew it. After his march from selma to montgomery, he spoke about how segregation was created to keep people divided. Instead of higher wages for workers, dr. King described how poor whites in the south were fed jim crow which told a poor white worker that no matter how bad off you are, at lisa he was a white man, better than the black man. Rachel hatred was part of keeping the powerful on top. When we turn on each other, bankers can run our economy from wall street,
Oil Companies with fight off clean energy and companies request ship jobs overseas, when we turn on each other, rich guys like trump can push through more tax breaks for themselves and then we will never have enough money to support our schools, rebuild our highways or invest in our kids futures. When we turn on each other we cant unite to fight back against a rigged system. Well ive got news for donald trump, the
American People are not falling for it weve seen this ugliness before and we are not going to be
Donald Trumps hatefilled america, not now, not ever this is about our values, about our shared values with our candidates,
Hillary Clinton and tim caine. Lets talk about those values, we believe no matter who you are, where you are from or who you love, equal means equal and hillary will fight to make sure discrimination has no place in america and were with her we believe that no one, no one who works fulltime should live in poverty, hillary will fight for the raising of american wage, fight for rights and for families and we are with her we believe every kid in america should have a chance for a great education without getting crushed by debt hillary will fight for refinancing
Student Loans and get free college, we are with her and we believe that after a lifetime of hard work, seniors should be able to retire with dignity. Hillary will fight to expand
Social Security, strengthen medicare and protect our retirement accounts and were with her we believe that
Oil Companies shouldnt call the shots in washington. Science matters,
Climate Change is real hillary will fight to preserve this earth for our children and grandchildren and were with her we believe, and i cant believe i have to say this in 2016, in equal pay for equal work and a womans right to control her own body hillary will fight for women and were with her we believe we dont need weaker rules on wall street we need stronger rules and when big banks get risky, break em up hillary will fight to hold big banks accountable and were with her and we believe that the
United States should never, never signn trade deals that help giant corporations but leave workers in the dirt. Hillary will fight for
American Workers and were with her okay. And just one more, just one more we believe we must get big money out of politics and root out corruption. Hillary will fight to overturn sit sequence united and return this government to the people if you believe that america must work for all of us not just the rich and the powerful. If you believe that we must reject the politics of fear and division, if you believe that we are stronger together, then lets work our hearts out to make
Hillary Clinton the next president of the
United States thank you thank you. Senator
Elizabeth Warren of massachusetts coming out to build up to the final speaker of the night, senator
Bernie Sanders, of course she is popular among the liberal wing of the party and even as she was speaking donald trump was on twitter attacking her and hes not fond of her. I think we knew that from the term pocohantas the term he used. This is representative
Keith Ellison of minnesota. Good evening democrats we are united around the most progressive platform in history the most progressive platform in history a 15 dollar an hour minimum wage, banning private expanding
Social Security, the public option and get free college tuition. Thats the platform that
Bernie Sanders and
Hillary Clinton wrote together. And thats the platform that we can make the law of the land if we stand together, if we
Work Together, and if we vote together on november 8th. You know trump, he wants to divide and conquer us with his antimuslim, antimexican, antiworker message. They dont want us to vote they want to push voter id laws that black and latino voters. Paul ryan wont allow a vote to restore the
Voting Rights act you know we must push back voting is not not voting is not a protest, it is a surrender when they bring the fear we bring the courage when they bring the division, we gotta bring the unit, everybody as a proud and i said proud
Bernie Sanders supporter, i will always remember feeling the bern in minnesota theres my minnesotans over there six,000 in duluth, 14,000 in st. Paul, bernie sparked the beginning of a revolution, yall. He packed em in from davenport to detroit, to your town and mine. 13 million americans voted their progressive values and millions more made an investment in building that movement 27 at a time together we call for climate justice, we call for rachel justice, we call for wage justice and you know what . We made our voices heard and together democrats, we will make our voices heard in november when we defeat donald trump and elect
Hillary Rodham clinton to the next president of the
United States of america. But tonight let us raise our voices in gratitude to the man who has helped make this great party greater than ever, ladies and gentlemen, i give you
Bernie Sanders first we see a video, the senator from vermont being introduced by a video showing ordinary people. Clearly some enthusiastic bernie supporters, high fives, and were listening to simon and garfunkel again. You see, a montage of faces and bernie walking with his wife jane. He talked about the movement that he created and were probably going to hear him say that again tonight. Interesting thing about
Bernie Sanders he was actually in the hall tonight earlier. Please welcome
Bernie Sanders from vermont. And here us, it will be interesting to see his supporters, the entire room is waving blue and white bernie signs. It will be interesting to see if they go along with his appeal to them for

Incredible Service to our country. She has made all of us proud let me begin by thanking the hundreds of thousands of americans who actively participated in our campaign as volunteers, thank you let me thank the 2. 5 million americans who helped fund or campaign with an unprecedented 8 million in individual campaign contributions. Anyone know what that average contribution was . Right, 27. And let me thank the 13 million americans who voted for the

To my family, my wife, jane, our four kids and seven grandchildren, thank you very much i understand that many people here in this
Convention Hall and around the country are disappointed about the final results of the nominating process. I think its fair to say that no one is more disappointed than i am. But to all of our supporters, here and around the country, i hope you take enormous pride in the historical accomplishments we have achieved. Together, my friends, we have begun a
Political Revolution to transform america and that revolution, our revolution continues election days come and go but the struggle of the people to create a government which represents all of us and not just the 1 . co a government based on the principles of economic, social, rachel, and environmental justice, that struggle continues. And i look forward to being part of that struggle with you. Let me be as clear as i can be. This election is not about and it has never been about
Hillary Clinton or donald trump or
Bernie Sanders or any other of the candidates who sought the precedenty. This election is not about political gossip, its not about polls, its not about campaign strategy, its not about fundraising, it is not about all the things that the media spends so much time discussing. This election is about and must be about the needs of the
American People and the kind of future we create for our children and our grandchildren. This election is about ending the 40year decline of our middle class. The reality that 47 million men, women and children today live in poverty. It is about the understanding that if we do not transform our economy our
Younger Generation will likely have a lower standard f living than their parents.
