If it doesn't happen maybe it will happen later the head of Facebook has sought to assure European parliamentarians that preventing interference in democratic elections is one of his company's top priorities Mark Zuckerberg said Facebook was closing down fake accounts combating bogus news and increasing transparency on advertising he apologized for the leaks of customers data but said Facebook had taken measures to hold this but there was a lot of anger from political leaders who felt Mr Zuck about wasn't towns from their questions one committee member gave a start told him he should think hard about his legacy you have to ask yourself what how you will be remembered as one of the 3 big Internet giants together with Steve Jobs I should say and Bill Gates who have enriched all worlds and all societies were at the other hands in fact the genius who created the digital monster that is destroying all democracies in our society so that's a question that you have to put yourself for yourselves. Then as well or has expelled a senior u.s. Diplomatic representative in the country President Nicolas Maduro allege that told Robinson Washington Shari defer had been conspiring against his government he made the announcement during the proclamation of his election victory the Americans say the vote was fraudulent and threatened new sanctions Mr Mo duros said the u.s. Measures offended what he called national dignity. The human rights group Amnesty International has condemned the militant Rohinton organization known as are set for killing dozens of Hindus during its attacks on the Burmese security forces last August Southeast Asia correspondent Jonathan Head reports when the Myanmar government accused range of militants last September of carrying out a massacre of Hindus there was some skepticism even after reporters were invited to see mass graves and the rows of bodies which had been exempt from them now a report by Amnesty International supports what the Myanmar government was alleging that there was at least one possibly 2 massacres by the ranger group after during the 1st days of the group's uprising against the Burmese security forces Amnesty says arse's leaders should be held to account for what it describes as the sheer brutality of their actions football's world governing body fever has closed an anti doping investigation into some members of Russia's provisional World Cup squad less than a month before the country hosts the tournament it said it had not found enough evidence to pursue any case the $28000.00 Millennium technology prize has been awarded to 2 almost entirely of Finnish physicists who created the technology that allowed the miniaturization of our smart devices more than 40 years ago he developed what's known as atomic layer deep is asian the manufacture of ultra thin material layers of devices such as computers and smartphones Mr son Tyler made little money from his breakthrough but he will now receive a $1000000.00 prize b.b.c. News. Hello and welcome to News that it's coming to you live from our studios in London here b.b.c. World Service I'm Tim Franks the top story this hour is that President Trump has dropped heavy hints that his summit with the North Korean leader may well be delayed also on the program the Venezuelans were greeting the reelection of President during by deciding to leave the country and his island prepares for a referendum on abortion doctors a divided doctors will cation is to preserve life and comfort life not to end life to those is not whether Irish women will have abortions it is about where they will have abortion. More on that debate towards the end of the program. First though to Washington as our correspondent Anthony Zuiker observed on Twitter it's time perhaps to check the constellation policy on those hotel bookings in Singapore have said he was referring to the location of Donald Trump's Sheffield summit with can join him sure jeweled for June the 12th in Singapore but within the last few hours the president has given the clues to the case and yet that the meeting may well be perspiring and Mr Trump was speaking as he received the South Korean president. At the White House there's a chance it's a very substantial chance it won't work out I don't want to waste a lot of time and I'm sure he doesn't want to waste a lot of time so there's a very substantial chance that it won't work out and that's Ok that doesn't mean it won't work out over a period of time but it may not work out for June 12th Mr Trump went on to suggest that harder line statements out of Pyongyang that caused the uncertainty we'll see what happens there are certain conditions that we want and I think we'll get those conditions and if we don't we don't have the meeting and frankly it has a chance to be a great great meeting for North Korea and a great meeting for the world. If it doesn't happen maybe it'll happen later and then the man who wrote the book called The Art of the deal waxed philosophical You never know about deals you go into deals that are 100 percent sure it doesn't happen you going to deals that have no chance and it happens and sometimes happens easily I mean a lot of deals you know deals I think better than anybody knows deals you never really know and that's why I said here but I will tell you it is a good man and he is a very capable man and I think South Korea is very lucky to have Donald Trump paying tribute to his guest in the White House the South Korean president. Joel Witt is a former u.s. State Department official who has experience in negotiating with the North Koreans He's now a senior fellow at the Stimson Center it's a Washington based think tank how significant would it be if the Trump summit were to spend Well you know a lot depends on why it was delayed and of course at this point it's not knowable whether it's going to be delayed or not or whether this is just posturing so I don't know how significant it would be if if it's just a reflection of some logistical or administrative problems and probably not significant if it's a reflection of really deep substantive differences then you know more significant but differences can be also be worked out over time so it's very difficult to say how far do you think that the the timing and the agenda and the in a sense the good p.r. For this summit is being driven and perhaps driven to hod by Moon j m How far do you think that the South Korean leader in his effort to broker this summit between the u.s. And North Korea has raised expectations too high well I think that's a good question and I think it's more likely that the expectations been raised to high by the fact that it least u.s. Officials and particularly President Trump not been careful in what they've said publicly and I think what we need to do is to tone down our rhetoric whether it's positive or negative and just be caught during this period leading up to the summit remembering that the North Koreans fall very closely what our leaders say publicly and as we all know they react. So let's not get carried away in either direction or negative let's just focus on the preparation let's try to keep expectations at a reasonable level and then when we get to the meeting I think we'll be in a much better spot how far do you think that what we're seeing will what we're potentially seeing in terms of this summit and the language that's coming out of the White House. Could be an inversion of normal diplomacy where each tend to get summits between leaders when all the hard diplomatic graft has been done but perhaps with this summit to go ahead it would be the starting point and then you know maybe the leaders would disengage slightly maybe President Trump would disengage slightly and then it would be down to officials to work out all the tough details Yeah I think this is a good thing you know we've had a long period of time since 1909 where we tried the sort of traditional diplomatic approach and a lot of people have concluded that doesn't work and the best way of doing things is to go directly to the North Korean leader. And not not just Donald Trump I mean people in the Obama administration were trying to find there's sort of magic key that unlocked the door and John Yang through not going through the Foreign Ministry but going to agencies closer to the top So this is not something new What's new is President Trump has succeeded in making it happen hopefully And so what we would see year if it worked out properly would be to leaders would sit down talk come up with some general guidelines for moving forward 'd not just on denuclearization but also on North Korea's demands then hold handed off to negotiators but also stay involved that's important the senior people have to stay involved maybe not President Trump every day but certainly the secretary of state should stay involved can make sure the process doesn't drag out too long or doesn't break down so this can work if people pay proper attention to the details and how folks do the recent events over the Iran nuclear codes the u.s. With drool changed the weather when it comes to future potential negotiations with North Korea I don't think it changes the weather at all if we think that the North Koreans you know the light bulb just went on in their head that you know different administrations don't honor each other's agreements we don't understand the history here the North Koreans saw that happen in Spain in the transition from the Clinton administration to the Bush administration in 2000 when the deal they reached with the Clinton administration was overturned by the bush. So they understand history very well they understand lots of danger and I'm sure they're thinking about how to minimize the danger Joel Witt used to work for the State Department he now works for the policy research group the Stimson Center in Washington. For Venezuela's president Snick last Maduro after a victory has come the backlash as we've been reporting with our team in country over the last few days Mr Madeira is reelection on Sunday amid an opposition courting planes a vote rigging has been greeted with international sanctions in a massed recall of ambassadors and in return today the expulsion of the top u.s. Diplomat the sharply to fare from the capital Caracas his or South America correspondent Katie Watson. Caracas bus station tells you all you need to know about what people think of politics here every day families packing up their lives in search of some kind of future but I can't bear market yet I don't buy it that's over here and now he's on her way to Chile with her husband and sister leaving their parents behind goodbyes never easy but if you don't know when the next hello will be it's all the more painful. And you know I've been many sad that I'm not you know what does and what doesn't our family understands. They support us 100 percent they know it's better to leave because there's no future for us here. Husband says a minimum wage doesn't pay for even 300 grams of meat you know people that only one of you know like when you are getting laid. And all that we call to have a baby either because we call to Fort that peace or milk with delayed a future because of the situation here. I was. Across the road Grayson and his cousin Assad reading the paper with their bags beside them they don't know where they're going and neither do they can they just want to head to the border but all the tickets is sold out. In Victoria they have I would of I ask Grayson how he feels about Madrid is victory you know we are getting all the more we just Madeira won yesterday and we're leaving today how do you think I feel the hardest part of this for me is not being able to hug my 3 kids looking at photos just isn't the sign of. Where I was. A few meters away I meet Maria she's been walking in front of the bus station for years renting her phones to those who need to make calls might be doing is when I mean see that again because I need to this isn't Narnia this is Venezuela she tells me she says she's never seen so many people queuing for tickets to need to. Come to one of the poorest neighborhoods in Caracas and I've come to a river which is suddenly filthy it's grey it's flowing fast there about 8 men in the river picking up sediment and the filtering sediment looking for coins valuables and anything they can get their hands on to try and make some money. Douglas give out or has been working in this river for 14 years here in my hand of a gun. But on the other any arguments on rationing when I started there were about 6 people working here now with a grocers that are more than a 100 and. It's thin pickings there are lots of coins in the material he speaks up they used to be worth something but with hyperinflation of more than 13000 percent and no more valuable than the settlement itself instead he's on the lookout for silver and gold another boy point sounds nearing backing he's found a piece of metal that could change his day. And night along for those living on the streets but I have one on me now but off on a 2nd and then I met a group of boys waiting outside a pharmacy The youngest is just 7 years old every month they tell me there are new arrivals and dust falls that work begins begging for something to eat 8 year old Jose tells me that things have got much tougher in recent months thank God that my son that was more or. It used to be that lots of people came in their cars to drop off with the crisis fewer people can be generous with no change at the top the March towards greater economic and social misery is expected to quicken these little boys never had much of a future but it's looking far less hopeful now. He was reporting from Caracas and if you want more on the disaster that is Venezuela do you go to the b.b.c. World Service news page it's our clips page in particular that you should hunt for and there's my colleague James Mendez is haunting report long report but well worth listening to on Venezuela's crumbling hospital system here with the b.b.c. World Service and live from London this is News and. Then coming up on this edition of the program in the Yemen there's food in the markets but no money to bite people simply cannot afford to buy the food that is sitting in the markets and therefore unable to feed their families and their children and that is the biggest problem people are buying a 5th or a 10th of the amount of food that they were before and it's kind of torture is because he will go into the markets and the food will be there it's there's not a shortage of it but people simply cannot afford to buy it with no salaries pay for months even years because of the war Yemenis aren't going hungry we hear from the reporter just back from the front lines in 30 minutes one headline to remind you of its sad lead story President Trump has said there's a risk his planned summit with the leader of North Korea will now not go ahead next month. This is News and live from the b.b.c. In London I'm Jim Franks one of the world's most powerful men said sorry today Mark Zuckerberg the founder of Facebook traveled all the way to the rippin parliament in Brussels he said that Facebook could to help give Europeans a powerful tool to connect to each other but there were apologies to be made of the way 3rd parties have been able to harvest data from uses and for allowing fake news to spread on the site but it's also become clear over the last couple of years that we haven't done enough to prevent these tools from being used for harm as well and that goes for fake news foreign interference in elections and developers misusing people's information. We didn't take a broad enough view of our responsibility now is a mistake and I'm sorry for it. One of the members of the European Parliament facing Mr Zuckerberg across the room was the former Belgian promise to give a harsh that he said that nothing less than the free to democracy was at stake you have to ask you'll solve how you will be remembered as one of the dri big Internet giants together with Steve Jobs I should say and Bill Gates who have enriched all worlds were on the other hand the fact that the genius who created the digital monster that is destroying all democracies in our society saw him that's a question that you have to put yourself wields. The words of give for. Listening to all that has been the B.B.C.'s your correspondent David Greene massacres at the European Parliament Damien did Mr Zuckerberg produce anything new Revelator useful as you were concerned. Not much t.v. I mean the he had a couple of small things in there that people might have picked up on where he's talking about a delete my history button for users of Facebook but like you have on websites web browsers at the minute things like that but no I mean really the whole thing was very un satisfactory and the political leaders were extremely unsatisfied at the end and they made that very clear to Mr Secretary because the format was that they each answer asked the questions in turn and instead of a back and forth where he answered each question there was in that hour of 12 political leaders putting all their very detailed I have to say questions to Mrs a québec and then half an hour or so of him giving very general answers and at t
