The tsa is rolling out new patdown procedures at nearly all airports across the country. Including San Francisco international. Some people are worried that these new methods will be more invasive. Kron fours Spencer Blake has the latest from sfo. There used to be afive security patdowns the tsa would use, depending on different situations at a checkpoint. But now theyve streamline everything into aone, universal patdown. It was noninvasive. Completely. Thats what one woman said after she got the patdown in aspen, colorado on her way to San Francisco monday. Though the tsa wont give details about how or where on the body the new patdown is to be done, the administration did say it does not involve any body parts that werent already screened in the previous procedures. I just had so much clothing on, and then there was something in the scan when i went through the scan that showed something around my belt area. The standardiztion does not get rid of targeted, screening meaning an officer may still search individual areas if something shows up on a passengers electronic screening. They showed me the color codes and they patted me down on those particular spots. Passengers who elect the patdown over the electronic screening now face the same physical search as those who are selected randomly. Tsa officers have been classroomtrained on the new procedure. San Francisco Police confirm the tsa met with the department to talk about and demonstrate the new patdown, but thats Standard Practice aany time theres a change in security procedures. Tsa Public Affairs manager Nico Melendez says hes unaware of any anticipated uptick in complaints about the patdowns to police. Ive never had a problem with tsa. Theyve always been polite and ive never had a problem. If you do get a patdown, you still have the option to be screened in private, with a traveling companion present.
