Once downloaded and installed the app uses the phones accelerometer to quietly listen for the unique shaking patterns of an earthquake. The idea was developed by researchers at the Berkeley Seismological Laboratory and they collaborated with the Silicon Valley Innovation Center in Mountain View to create the app. Weve been working closely with berkeley for a few years. For now, myshake is only collecting data and sending it back to a server for analysis, but one day it could become the core of a global earthquake detection network. If all goes well, the system will work like this in the event of an earthquake, the myshake app. Which can tell the difference between man made shaking and an actual quake. Will send a trigger to a server. If that server receives triggers from other smart phones in the same area, the computer can then send out alerts to the surrounding region, possibly giving people a few seconds warning before the earthquake reaches them.
