San leandro is the latest city in the bay area to become a sanctaury city. It joins a growing list that includes San Francisco oakland and san jose. Tonight kron4s Hermela Aregawi talked to san leandros mayor about what exactly the new status means. Standupwell the mayor tells me this is largely a symbolic move to let all residents here know they will be treated fairly regardless of their immigration status. This is particularly important to san leandro because it touts itself as one of the more diverse cities in the bay area. The mayor tells me about half the people here speak a second language at home. And 30 are immigrants. With a uninanimous vote. San leandro became the seventh sanctuary city in the bay area. In a february 21st meeting, dozens of residents showed up to support the move. Students rhamia hall and jordan woods. Were among them. Sot jordan woods, student, San Leandro High Social Justice Academyi know Family Members. I know cousins. Sot rhamia hall, student, San Leandro High Social Justice Academy their immigration status should have no affect on whether or not theyre protected underneath the law. So for me a sanctuary city just makes sense. However, not everyone was happy about the move. Mayor pauline cutter, san leandro i think what happened is people were, theres a lot of fear out there and angst about whats going on. The fear is all of the sudden police werent going to be arresting people. They were going to be less safe. Our taxes would get raised and all of those things which just arent going to happen. Sleep is super important. The kind of deep sleep i can only get on my tempurpedic. It adapts to me. My shape, my size, my body. Tempurpedic. This sleep is power. Tonight. As we track more rain headed to the bay area. Many areas are still dealing with storm related problems. That includes niles canyon in Alameda County. Part of that road is closed because of mudslides. Now several sinkholes have opened up. And if the problem gets worsethe entire road could be wiped out. Kron4s Lydia Pantazes is live she tagged along with crews to get a closer look. Lydia . Lydia the rain has definitely kept alameda public works busy the last few weeks. They seen mudslides, falling boulders and now sinkholes. It may not look like much. But these holes covered by asphalt are part of a much bigger problem on palomares road in Alameda County. The whole road could give way, yeah, it could. John medlock is the deputy dorector for the maintenance and Operation Department of the public c works agency of Alameda County. He says each hole is about 45 feet deep. The county recently covered the holes with asphalt as a temporary fix to prevent the holes from getting any bigger. The undermining of the roadway is across the road and so anywhere between 40feet. 4050 feet of undermined roadway and the length of the pipe. Under the road is a culvert that allows water to flow under the road. That culvert needs to be replaced. You look at it it doesnt look to bad, no it doesnt but it is bad enough for us to issue an emergency order to get it repaired to get a contractor out here very quickly to repair it. The sinkhole is just one of the issues plaguing palomares road. Part of the road is still shut down due to a mudslide. While this is the largest slide, there are several smaller ones throughout the area. A combination of rain, wind and gravity makes things come down and makes things fall apart. The hope now is the county will have enough time to fix things that are falling apart before the next round of rain. Palomares road is a popular short cut for commuters but Alameda CountyOfficials Say if you dont live on this road, dont use it. Still happening for neighborhoods affected by last weeks devastating floods in san jose. That includes public parks and other city property. The creek jumped its banks at kelly park. Causing flood waters to sweep through happy hollow zoo. The zoo is now partially opened. As employees continue to clean up mud and disinfect nearly every inch of the facility. Animals like the meerkats have habitats in the flood zone. And needed to be moved to higher ground. Completely all of the animals in the lower zoo had to be evacuated to other areas. The meerkats currently living in a bathroom. Until their habitat is cleaned of mud and possible contamination. Cleanup costs for the coyote creek area. Is expected to jump above the current estimate of 23 Million Dollars. Most of the water from the san jose flooding came from Anderson Reservoir near morgan hill. Now even though the creek has returned to normal. Theres lingering concern thatthe reservoir could still pose a threat to people downstream. Kron4s Charles Clifford explains. As of thursday afternoon, Anderson Reservoir near morgan hill is at 99. 7 percent of full capacity. Thats actually down quite a bit from last week when excess water was gushing over the spillway. Now, only a trickle is flowing over the spill way and this surging waterfall downstream has also gone quiet. For the moment, the danger of flooding along coyote creek has passed but unfortunately, there is another problem here. Standup anderson dam was built back in the 1950s and in 2007 seismic testing here showed that in the event of a major earthquake, a 7. 3 or greater on the nearby calvaras fault, the damn could fail. That could send a wall of water into morgan hill and possibly as far away as san jose. Since then, the Santa Clara ValleyWater District has been required to keep the reservoir at a maximum of 68 percent of full capacity and right now its sitting at 99. 7 percent. The Water District has estimated it could take up to 9 weeks or longer to get the reservoir back down to where it should be. If we get more rain or the snow in the sierra melts too fast this spring, it could take even longer to drain the lake. Sotit makes me nervous. We live in a state that has earthquakes. For the People Living downstream from the dam, like scott gill, the earthquake danger is unsettling. Hes been working on getting earthquake and flood insurancesotso my heirs will end up getting it because ill be wiped out a mile downstream. I mean if this thing collapsed it would be goodbye. Standup now, unfortunately, fixing this problem wont be cheap and it wont happen soon. The Santa Clara ValleyWater District projects it will cost over 400 Million Dollars to fix the dam and work isnt scheduled to begin until 2024.
