Thats all thats left of the big house, inc on mission. Fire gutth the inside of the store just after 1 00 tuesday afternoon. A little over 100 firefighters. Reporter from our partnership with abc news, you can see the flames shooting out of the retail store. Smoke could be seen for miles, forcing more than a hundred people to evacuate the area. Firefighters had to go on the offensive. People living nearby grabbed what they could and got out of harms way. My cat was first on my priority list. Reporter three people were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. As for the cause of the fire, thats still under investigation. Now, we want to continue our Team Coverage for more on the fire out here and how it impacted residents. We want to go to dan ruben. Reporter well, the smoke was unbelievable. In fact, the smoke is whats driven moment of the people from their homes. It was thick and persistent lasting for hours before the fire was brought under control. Pg e had to dut off electricity and gas to a lot of these homes and businesses. When i tried to go into some of the homes, and businesses, i was turned away. But the businesses that managed to stay open werent doing well. One owner said business was down even though her door was still open. The scene was nothing short of terrifying. My husband said i think you should go check out the fire. I went down and i said oh, my gosh. Its huge. Theres a lot of merchandise thats stored in the upper levels and thats fueling the fire. They are doing everything they can to put the fire out. And when i checked bartlett street and theres a lot of smoke coming through the back side of the houses. They were evacuated. Something like this can be very, very dangerous and it can expand very quickly. So kudos to the Fire Department because they have been able to contain it and they did so very quickly. Reporter now, even though the fire was contained to two storefronts, over 100 people were forced from their homes. Its unclear if pg e has been able to restore any of the power or gas that they purposely shut off while firefighters were fighting the fire. A lot of firefighters have already started to clear this scene. We have traffic starting to loosen up behind me. This location, mission at 23rd is still closed for the time being. Its unclear when any of those 100 plus people forced from their homes will be able to return. Reporting live in the Mission District, dan ruben, kron4 news. This video sent to us from a viewer.
