Reporter well, pam, this friday marks 25 year s since loma prieta and of course, scientists have always said its not a matter of if, but when we get the next big earthquake. After this study, we might get a little bit of insight into where that might hit. Back in august, of course, the napa quake up there that was so bad. These image tough to get out of your mind. Now, according to a new geological study, four Northern California faults are locked and loaded, ready for a big quake any day now. Talking about a 6. 8 magnitude or higher. Jim with the usgs is the first author of this new paper today. I sat down with him to get a better understanding on how his findings could impact us. These faults are the heyward fault, the Rutgers Creek fault and the green valley fault and a fault thats on your list at north and really set the terms, its locked and loaded, basically, its locked and loaded to make an earthquake as big as you can expect on these faults, its just a reminder that the faults are ready and were not. San francisco General Hospital is taking extra steps to prepare its staff for any possible ebola patient. Today, hospital staff underwent several training drills. Doctors say they practice putting on and taking off personal protective equipment, when treating a patient with ebola symptoms. A county Health Official says they training exercises will raise the level of competency when treating a patient with ebola. One of this things we realize is that the devil is in the details. And that the staff need to feel very fom comfortable in putting on personal protective equipment, being able to take it off so they dont become contaminated, have the procedures in place so they know how to transport a patient. How to minimize the number of Laboratory Blood draws we have to do for that patient. And were told staff at also getting additional training on how to handle suspected cases of ebola. Other news now. East bay shore road and pa loo al to is open following a deadly Early Morning crash. The driver is behind bars. Arrested torres on vehicular manslaughter, felony dui, and misdemeanor unlicensed driving. Investigators say torres was traveling south on east bay shore road when he struck a power pole, lost control of the car, and then hit a male pedestrian. Officers arrived and found that pedestrian dead. N the roadway. Police are not releasing the identity of the victim. Ten people were injured after the ferry they were on crashed into pier 41 in San Francisco. Headed to oakland when it hit a piling on sunday. Here it is, here it comes into the north bay at 8 00, and then it will start sagging south to San Francisco and the coastline by midnight. Moving into the east baby 3 00. So livermore, seeing the rain, kind of overnight, by 5 00, down into the south bay, and by the morning commute, things should largely be dry. But we could see some of these lingering shower, especially near the coastline into Late Wednesday morning and early afternoon. Temperatures tomorrow significantly cooler than we what we saw today. 60s and 70s through the bay area, 64 in San Francisco. 15 degrees cooler than today. We were in the 90s inland tomorrow. But another chance of rain in the bay area friday and saturday. 25 years ago, this week, a devastating 6. 9 magnitude earthquake e rumented on the san an dras fault. At the loma prieta peak of the santa cruz mountains. That quake leveled structures in many sections of the bay area, killing more than 60 people, injuring some 4,000 others. Maureen kelly went to some of the areas hit hardest to show us how things have changed. That is completely collapsed. Reporter the disaster was here in west oakland over 70 miles away, from the quakes epicenter. The section of 880 known as the cypress freeway collapsed at the height of the evening commute. Some motorists trapped were freed, but others werent so lucky. We got some of them out, quite a few thats just just no help. Reporter more than 40 people lost their lives. Now that same location looks like this. The freeway eventually repaired and rerouted. The road that snakes along the cypresss former footprint is now known as the mandela parkway. Serious damage on the bay bridge. Reporter one motorist was killed in the chaos after the upper deck collapsed. The damage shut down the major artery for a month. Today, that section of the cant lever still stands, but not for long, its slowly being dismanted. Now the eastern span is operational. The marina, a neighborhood build on landfill was San Franciscos hardist hit in 89. Nearly a dozen buildings ground 0, the intersection of the visit arrow head beach. Collapsed and burst into flames. Across the way from it on the northeast part of the beach also collapsed. It collapsed into about threequarters of a story. Reporter 25 years later, here, you can see what that intersection of it looks like today. Quake damage buildings, torn down and replaced with new construction on three out of the four corners. Five people were killed when the facade of this south of Market Building on the corner of sixth came crashing down, showering the streets with bricks. That building was eventually torn down, now condominiums occupy that same corner. In santa cruz, piles of bricks and cracked walls could be seen in the pacific garden maul. Buildings in that section were leveled and many businesses displaced. Then, National Guards men patrolled the streets. Now, 25 years later, shoppers are back strolling the mall. We first told you about this issue earlier this month when visitors complained about the dead fish washing a shore at Lake Cunningham in san jose.
