Hours before it was to take effect. A federal judge blocks president trumps second attempt at a travel ban. steve the executive order would have limited the issuing of new green cards and visas to travelers from 6 muslim majority countries. It also would have reduced the number of refugees allowed into the country. pam kron 4s Charles Clifford is live for us tonight at sfo with details. Charles. Well, the president s first attempt at a travel ban back in january triggered chaos and protests at airports around the country, including here at sfo. A federal judge in washington eventually blocked that original executive order. Now, the president s second attempt has also been blocked as well but this time it happened before the ban took hold. New tonight, the president is also pushing back against this new ruling. On wednesday, u. S. District judge Derrick Watson in hawaii issued a 43page ruling delaying the trump administrations 2nd attempt at a travel ban. After the original ban was blocked in february, the white house dropped its appeals and chose to instead rework the executive order. The new version, which they had hoped would pass judicial scrutiny, dropped several controversial provisions including a ban on current green card and visa holders. Iraq was also removed from the list of nations included in the ban. The revised version, which was set to take effect on thursday, would have still stopped the issuing of new green cards and visas to people from yemen, iran, syria, somalia, sudan and libya for 90 days. It would have also stopped all refugees from entering the country for 120 days and reduced the total number of refugees admitted into the country to 50,000 per fiscal year. The changes apparently were not enough to appease judge watson who said the revised ban violates the First Amendment right protecting people against religious discrimination. Sotthis ruling makes us look weak. On wednesday afternoon, the president cried foul. Claiming the judiciary had over reached. Sotwe are going to fight this terrible ruling. We are going to take our case as far as it needs to go including all the way up to the supreme court. In the meantime, the president s travel ban is also being challenged in court in several other states besides hawaii. More rulings are expeted in the days ahead. Finally, judge jay bybee who sits on the 9th Circuit Court of appeal said in paperwork filed today that his colleagues on the court were wrong to block the president s original travel ban. He believes the president has the authority to stop people from entering the country and that judges can not challenge the president s motives.
