They are all candidates are vowing to keep the community safe. And weve got a lot of rain, all whole lot of rain, hurricane coming on shore. Well talk about that coming up next. Its been a very busy news day. Weve been talking about the shooting in oakland, but of course, the other big story tonight is Hurricane Ian. You are looking live picture now from florida at this. A hurricane hit the florida coast today. It started in as a category 4 storm. It has since been downgraded to a category one. Just ask lawrence who said it is still a pounding florida. Earlier it was flooding streets and builditgs. It was knocking out power to. Roughly 2 Million People threatening catastrophic damage further inland. Lawrence, you say theyre still taking a pounding. Yeah, this will be the case here for the about 36 hours is long way to go. In this hurricane, its a very large storm about 300 miles across the aisle was was coming on shore about 35 miles across. And thats where we saw a lot of the significant damage. I think tomorrow. As were able to get some planes up, were going to notice some changes coming our way as weve got the storm system moving on some sound effects. Yeah, we got the alarms going. Let you know how severe that was. But yeah, you can see that storm working its way into Central Florida there. Now, this just really been ripping love the heavy rain. You can see associate with the northern part of the hurricane kind. Interesting. Usually the first part of the storm system comes on shore. The right front quadrant always the most dangerous. Now were seeing kind of a shift now since moved on shore. But it has weakened now. And thats the good news. We see it moving away from that source of water and pushing on shore. The gusty kind of his thing as it was approaching the coastline. You start to see the winds picking up. We have some gusts over 100 miles an hour near the coastline. Then all of a sudden love. These wind sensor just went out. They just died out there. A lot of power, of course, out in florida. Now for many folks in a lot of damage, of course, being done still watching for the potential for some flash flooding there as you makb your way in the long that eyewall, especially to the north here, you can see this area shaded in here, very heavy rainfall. Some reports overnight out 20 inches of rain already and counting and the areas shaded in yellow there. Theyre looking out for some tornadoes. A long way to go. This storm system really continue to roll around producing tremendous amounts of rain. Cant even imagine what that would be like. That kind of storm. But now its been downgraded to a category one sustained winds of 90 miles an hour moving north northeast at 8 miles an hour. So moving very slowly. And thats whats so dangerous about. The storm is still got potential to drop tremendous amounts of rain. Theres going to be flash flooding all florida and for about a storm surge not only on the west coast, but on the east coast, for maybe an 8 foot storm surge along the coastline. There and then its going to move out in the open waters again approaching and making its way possibly making landfall again in south carolina. So all along that path, we can expect more damage along the way. As we continue our coverage on in those strong winds bringing big damage to People Living all over florida. And help is on the way from the red some of those volunteers flocked to florida today from the bay area. Kron 4 Ella Sogomonian is live in the newsroom with more on what theyre doing. L a well, we actually started mobilizing these disaster earlier in the week before landfall, but 500 are already on the ground supporting evacuation coastal Sheriffs Office reported that it was already getting a significant number of calls for people trapped in flooded homes. Some video showed debris covered water sloshing toward those homes and the hurricane made landfall as we heard wednesday afternoon near cayo costa. Thats a protective Barrier Island just west of heavily populated fort myers, though, expected to weaken to a Tropical Storm as it marches inland. Ians Hurricane Force winds are likely to be felt well into Central Florida. So 14 red cross volunteers who are already there flew in from the bay area. We have 16 more on standby. Ready to go. Theyre just waiting for it to be safe for them to fly out and help. And those responders go out and provide shelter, support, disaster health, mental pope heating distribution of supplies, damage really everything that folks might need to get back on their feet after disasters like this. She explains that the first phase of the red cross help is focused on shelter. They prepaid spots across the United States in advance of a disaster to have them ready to go when need be in cases like this one. They havent really assess any damage or injuries at this time. And the red cross will be monitoring that. So theyre always in need of more help. You can donate or volunteer on their website in the newsroom. Ella sogomonian kron. 4 thank you for that.
