Businesses. We walked around this afternoon. We didnt see any damage, but police did tell us the suspect tried to shoot at him when they tried to stop him. A nice night out for people in downtown sonoma was disrupted saturday night after deputies say they were forced to shoot an armed man. The scene broke out on west napa and Second Street after deputies were told a man was trying to damage cars in a Shopping Center parking lot when they found the man they discovered he was armed with a gun and was trying to break the window of a limo. Deputies told him to drop the gun. The suspect refused. And shot at least one time at the deputy did not hit the deputy santa rosa. Police Sergeant Chris from ahern says thats when the deputy shot back. We believe the deputy hit him at least one time. The suspect then fled further into that parking lot. The suspect ran away but ended up face to face with more Law Enforcement minutes later popped out with the gun. Still in his hand, approaching deputies and a second deputy shot him. Police say the suspect fell to the ground and was taken to the hospital. Hes in Critical Condition because deputy shot the suspect. Theyre on paid administrative leave. The Santa Rosa Police department and the District Attorneys Office are investigating jessicas aunt to owned a Leather Goods store on the sonoma plaza just about a block away from where the shooting happened to that. They noticed a gun at the feet of the driver. They later found that the gun was firing bbcs 2 rounds of rifle, ammunition and also a small bag of meth were also found in this car. The man is convicted felon and unable to have ammunition in his possession. New at 8, a man behind bars in connection to an attempted assault at the walnut creek, bart station. Bart police say 34 yearold Richard Mcdowell of pittsburgh forced a 20 yearold woman into the elevator after both exited an sfo bound train just before midnight. They say he tried to take her pants off, but the victim fought back and was able to escape. A bart Police Sergeant spotted him saturday and was able to take him into custody. Also out of walnut creek tonight, police are looking for a suspect they believe shot at another man last night. The attempted homicide happened on the cul de sac of Hutchinson Court near northgate high school. The victim is in the hospital and will reportedly be ok, police tell us theres no threat to the community as this was an isolated incident. If you do have any information, youre asked to contact walnut creek pd. A teacher from the nation middle school has been arrested suspected of having an inappropriate relationship with a student. According to the school superintendent, 56 yearold kurt michael cent sexually inappropriate messages to a student. The School District notified police who arrested sunday on friday. He was booked on suspicion of harmful matter, sent with intent of to a minor, which is a felony. No other information has been released. Police say this investigation is ongoing tonight. Traffic a little heavy today on highway 24 in orinda following a rollover crash this afternoon. This happened in the eastbound lanes just east of the caldecott tunnel around one. 45 u haul truck telling an rv lost control and overturned, triggering a sig alert. We know at least one person was injured, but its not clear the extent of those injuries. The crash blocked 3 lanes for about 3 hours. The truck and trailer uprighted and eventually towed away. A 37 yearold oakley man was killed in a solo vehicle crash in brentwood. It happened near grant street and fairview avenue just before 7. 30, this morning. Brentwood police say the vehicle had overturned and when they arrived, they found the victim inside. No one else was involved in the crash. Police believe the driver was speeding at the time. Toxicology results are pending. The name of the victim has not yet been released. Californias Opioid Crisis continues to kill thousands of people each year, 10 years ago, fentanyl caused about 80 deaths across the state this past year. The state reported nearly 6,000 deaths due to the drug. Thats a 70 percent most of that increase happened between 2020 2021. This month, San Francisco assemblyman matt haney was tapped to lead a Bipartisan Committee to state of state lawmakers to try and investigate some solutions. These drugs are coming. In some cases from overseas sometimes are made in the u. S. Not only do we need to make sure that people who are addicted to fentanyl get help. But we also have to make sure that were stopping this a flow of these drugs into our state. The first hearing to present solutions for this problem is set for january of next year. All right. These images here change the bay area in a matter of seconds. This was 33 years ago on was a shock to the bay. There. The loma prieta earthquake catching the public and even the Science Community off guard. There was a real air of complacency. When David Schwartz joined the u. S. Geological survey in 1985, he says the focus was on the San Andreas Fault in southern california. The bay area hadnt seen a major quake since a 7. 9 San Francisco earthquake in 19. 0, 6, in the bay area basically was in africa. So that changed after loma prieta. The 6. 9 magnitude quake destroying bridges and leveling homes and buildings. 63 people died and more than 3,000 injured. The shaking lasted an agonizing 15 seconds. Shake terrible. I grew up new california. And grew up here in southern california. Up here and been through a lot of earthquakes. But this is really different than other ones. And it was a little scary and you could or g is the owner of bookshop. Santa cruz. His business and much of pacific avenue in downtown santa cruz was in ruins. Until november 8 this week, mailin ballots were sent out to every registered california voter. If youre not registered to vote, you have until october 24th to do so. If you want one of mailin ballots, if you miss that deadline, you can still vote, but you would have to fill out a same day Voter Registration form at your polling place or your local elections office. And if youre voting by mail for the first time, heres a few things you got to keep in mind when it comes to submitting your ballot. The easiest way to make sure that it is counted is to simply put it back in the mail, using the official and below that came with. I know that it must be postmarked by election day. If you dont want to mail in your ballot, you can always slip it into one of those official drop boxes station around your neighborhood or you can take it to an inperson polling place. They will accept your ballot anytime between now and 8 oclock at night on election day. And of course, you can always cast your ballot in person at your local polling place. As we said, those polling locations will be staying open until 8 oclock at night on election night. If youre still in line to vote at that point, stay in line. And in national news, a 20 yearold man is under arrest on suspicion of shooting 8 people at an outdoor gathering near the campus of James Madison university in harrisonburg, virginia. This happened at an offcampus apartment complex this crowd was gathered there when the man opened fire. The suspect was identified as tire reef. Fleming of harrisonburg, according to a statement, the harrisburg, harrisonburg Police Department posted on twitter this afternoon. Fortunately, all 8 of those victims had non lifethreatening injuries. Were told none of them for students. New york city opening new shelters and expecting to spend 1 billion dollars to help support the thousands of migrants who have been bussed into the city from southern states. New york city mayor eric adams declaring a state of emergency earlier this month as the citys shelter system struggles to accommodate the influx of migrants, other relief and Nonprofit Groups have stepped up to try welcome the people arriving in new york, providing basics like shoes and food to those in need.
