KRON KRON 4 News At 8am October 14, 2022

Is a helpless feeling. Im sure for them to be in their wheelchairs and then look across the street and see the home right now. Im sure has been entirely evacuated just to make sure that everybody is safe. We did see a little bit earlier. That firefighters and paramedics had to remove some of the people on stretchers. But the good news is we are not hearing of fatalities. It looks like the power is on at this particular time. So much will be under investigation. James reno, whether or not it passes sprinklers if fire alarm system was fully operational at the time they threw everything that they possibly could afis. You can see just all of this. The lights often the distance right there. They have taken this area over. We will try to talk to some of the evacuees, but the Police Department there are also here to help control the situation. If you walk with me, lets talk about how much theyve taken over this scene here. I know traffic will be a big concern moving forward as well. It looks like they will be here throughout the day because once they get this situation secure, they also will have to go in there to find out the cause of the fires. So hang with me, james and rain. I want to show you whats going on. This is the street that normally people would be going 60, 70 Miles Per Hour just to get some steam as they try to hop onto the freeway. Thats not happening right now. As you can clearly see, its been taken over by first responders. Theres ambulances right there just in case any of those evacuees, you know, something might happen to them in those paramedics will have to rush over to treat them. Worst case scenario, even take them to the hospital. Theres the freeway right in front of you, as i mentioned. So this is no longer an on ramp to 5. 80, will swing the camera over. Just to give you perspective of this location. All those firefighters, the paramedics theyve taken over. Thats the lakeshore, the Grand Theater in front of us. Lake merritt is right around the corner. So like i said, they threw everything that they possibly can at this particular situation. No huge towering flames anymore, but i can still smell smoke in the air is very strong. You can see the fire hydrant. It is still pumping thousands of gallons of water each minute through the hoses, onto the building. And theyre still spring the building right now. So it looks like theyre still dealing with hot spots at this particular time. But just judging by the body language of the first responders, jameson reyna, it looks like theyre no longer schering people out as quickly as they possibly can. Im sure theyve been through it, knocked on doors and it looks like for the most part, everybody is out the only people inside. I would imagine will be firefighters. Lets see. I come back to me a little bit later and see if i can talk to any of the Fire Department captain, some chiefs. To see whats going on. But again, simply too early to tell the cause of the fire. But the good news is it appears that nobody died from this fire. You can see we showed you a little earlier. The scene. They seem to be older citizens at this location. James, when will an incredible scene there. And youre showing us just how massive that response is. You showed us the people. That has to be evacuated. Im looking at that facility. Looks like a few stories there. You have a good grasp on how many people you think had to be evacuated this morning. Well, lets see is 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, floors to this building there. I dont know yet. We just got here about 30 seconds before you went to me out here on television, havent had a chance to get the name of the building. But you can see that gentleman next door not evacuating. Hes outside right now in his shorts and tshirt looking down. So it looks like the building next to it is just fine. Follow me one more time. If she can come over here. I mean, fires a fire. But behind it. Are humans. Theres the human element. And i just want to walk back here and show you once again. How many people are affected by this . Not sure if theyll be able to either return tonight. Once the spots around. So maybe the red cross will have to help them as well. And they just look incredibly helpless at this particular time. You can see them just looking exasperated, looking helpless, looking weak. Cold. A lot of them are getting food, something the snack on and being talked to by looks like nurses because it looks like scrubs people in scrubs in front of me. So theyre being treated donuts. Im sure coffee will be passed to them just to keep them warm and the paramedics are right there doing a wonderful job to take care of their needs. But that is about is. Heartbreaking and touching as you can possibly get with this situation. Just them looking across the street and looking very helpless at their bill. So it looks like a james reyna looks like were about to set up a podium to hear from the authorities come back out to me and ill try to take it to you live when it back to you guys. Ok . Well thank you very much for and well come back to will for another update here. Maybe even that press conference, that offramp thats close its grand avenue offramp in oakland. So just avoid that for right now. And for anybody who is interested, the address of that fire is at 401. Santa clara avenue. And thats the grand lake gardens, a Senior Living facility there in oakland. But as will said, it looks like everybody was able to make it out fine. Theyre being helped right now, right . Well, we have to get a look at weather. Many of you that are planning your day, john, whats happening over the next 24 hours for us here . Gray start, guys. But we will be seeing things clearing out much like we have up to this point this week. So far right now, looking out over the embarcadero light breeze. We are seeing the grain more than anything else and we will be working our way through the day. That brings a little less of it, especially towards the latter part of the morning might want to turn the windshield wipers on the time or 2 as we do see those misty drizzly conditions so far today, current temps anywhere from the 50s to the 40s up in the north bay. Pretty chilly up there. Cloverdale Santa Rosa Petaluma at 48 degrees. Oakland, youre at 55 right now San Francisco. A cool 53 reyna. John, thank you for that. Ok, lets get a look at your bridges this morning as youre heading into the city right now. 18 minute drive. Remember 5. 80, westbound next scene at grand avenue. That offramp is closed, as you can see on scene there will just brought us that san mateo bridge 15 minutes, a 80 to 101 traveling across towards the peninsula. Youre Richmond Center fell down to 9 minutes tolls to 101. There and the golden gate bridge. 37 to the tolls. You got that fog settling in 30 minutes on this friday morning. 807, is the time. Lets head to the north bay or the east bay now where dozens of citizens from crockett had a town hall meeting last night to talk about something that doesnt smell very great in the air is not smoke. It may be making people sick there across 4 Sarah Stinson standing by in Contra Costa County with the latest. Sara. Yeah, that nasty smell rotten eggs. Sewage is coming from the cnh Sugar Refinery can see it behind me here and us about of the pictures. You can get a good look at what were dealing with here in crockett. Unfortunately, the carbon air filters from your home are recommended. The hazmat teams. They provided 40 indoor filters to the schools nearby. This refinery. Just want let you know, rayna james right next to him, not smelling any strong smell, but were also right, not right next to it. And it really, as i said, depends on location and proximity. Well tell you what a neighbor had to say about the couple there. Alright, Reginald Freeman are e no. And we are back Live Press Conference happening right now in front of the grand lake garden Senior Living facility in oakland. It caught fire earlier this morning. Lets get the latest from the scene to 401, santa clara for reports of a structure fire. At 0, 5, 5, 7, its a company. 10 was the first on scene. And we struck a second alarm at 0, 6, 0, 2, hours. A 3rd alarm. At 0, 6, 2, 0 hours and a 4th alarm, 0, 6, 41 hours. We had a total of 16 engine companies, 5 trucks and for ambulances on scene to mitigate this incident. Heavy smoke and fire on the 5th floor. The apartment of origin was 5 to 2. We have 3 individuals transported to the hospital for care. And the total 85 residents that war evacuated. Out of those. 85 82 are considered green. One is ready to. Are you what is green was green, sir . Mean that they are just fight. One of the individuals transported to the hospital was one of our members for minor injury for minor injury. That was strictly for precautionary measures. As one of our firefighters correct. We made contact with the occupant of the apartment in origin, every guards to try to get an idea of how this fire started. The occupants state. It that she noticed a power strip that was sparking. They caught a blanket that was on fire on the adjacent couch. And the couch quickly was engulfed in fire. She left the apartment and the door was open when she left her apartment. With upon our arrival. That apartment was fully involved in fire and the fire spread out into the hallways. If it were not for the quick actions of our open firefighters. This would have turned out to be a very, very devastating day for the city of oakland. But im very proud of our members. Im very proud of how quickly, not only they responded, but the actions that they took upon their arrival, which truly save lives to date. The last time that this particular building was inspected was on october 7th. And everything was in order during that inspection. And i will take any questions at this time. Can you talk about the rescues that took place . We had a lot of residents that were on their balconies. Our firefighters made at least 9 rescues at this particular incident. And again, im very proud of the professionalism and their hard work. Everybody out yet out of it. People taken from their yes, from hearing on none were hanging off of the but several were in mobile to where we had to carry them down. All the evacuations are dot all of the evacuations are done. That is correct. Chief, because they seem to be a little older that make it even more challenging of an evacuation. A lot of the residents were in mobile. They needed operation. Pretty much the already of everyone. We evacuated. Needed the assistance of at least 2 firefighters to get out. At this time that is undetermined. But there will be rest dovers buildings or excuse my partners are going to be an water because the smoke and water damage that water there was an issue with the stamp art up on our inspection, october 7th, that standpipe was operable. There are no issues, but we did have issues with the stand by what i i what is just and thats what we connect to to, of course, mitigating fire in the event. There is one just like a pipe that goes to the building, correct . Connect to dust. Thats correct. That this fire catch you off guard because you had to keep elevating your resources to get here. Did ngt catch us off guard is what we do for a living. Every single that. It. And really, really pump from our engines. Very difficult. Well, our not only not only are they well trained, but theyre physically fit and this is what we train for every single host line. Did you have to bring out . Thousands of feet of hose . You mentioned that the apartment had this door open had been close, would have helped out a little bit. The door wouldnt close the fire without a script. So the door allow the open door, allow the fire to go down the hallway and to the other playoff thats going to be under investigation. There wasnt water being. Theres no water in a standpipe. So thats going to be investigated by far for that as far as the people, what is you just to make sure theyre warm. Theyre fed and any chance they might be back inside by the end of the day, some may be able to go back but the impact of floor, 5th floor. As well as the 4th floor directly going to be for this incident took place that will be determined. Showing played high in the building that usually Fire Fighters look into. Yeah, it worked. That was inaudible. 20 that force you to run the fire hose from basically the ground all of after correct . But on the 7 it was on october 7th. That is correct. Okay. So here we are listening at live at that press conference happening right now in front of the grand lake gardens, Senior Living facility on santa clara avenue in oakland. It caught fire early this morning and now were learning that fire originated on the 5th floor and one of the apartments apparently is sparking. Power. Caught a nearby blanket on fire and the resident of the department. Ran out of the room. The door was left open in the fire was able to spread to several of the other apartments, but looks like theyve got it all out. Now, everybody who was inside was safely evacuated out of there being helped out right for 5 residents in the air having to be evacuated. 3 of them at the hospital. So again, quick thinking working the Fire Department and just glad it wasnt much worse. Will keep you updated on that story as we get more and more information from that press conference. In the meantime, lets get over to the weather center. Weve got john with a look at our forecast on this friday. Good morning. Good morning, john. But see those residents are probably the best hands possible because it is kind of a cool morning out there. So everyone being covered up with the blankets. So nice and cozy. Hopefully we do have a chance to get them back in soon. It is going to be a morning as youre stepping outside to definitely through those jackets on and stay cozy yourselves. Weve got the low gray sitting right above Half Moon Bay right here as we make our way through the day youll see less and less of the great. Youre probably already guessed that part of it because weve been clearing up consistently late morning on into afternoon hours consistency breezes actually been quite welcome. I know if youre out the coastline, youre kind over the gray. Its not been that sunny for coastal neighbors were as those of us near the bay and inland how that a good dose of afternoon sun tomorrow is going to be a lot like today. Just a little cooler in sunday, a little cloudier and cooler yet. The reason were so appreciative for the sea breezes, its kind of opposite of what will oftentimes see during these fall months. This is the time of year when sometimes we have the highest fire danger set up with offshore dry winds. Thats not been the case this time around. Weve seen that consisten
