Straight ahead in Centsable Health we straighten out some myths when it comes to what to eat when faced with the disease. If you work hard, and you do your part, you should be able to get ahead and stay ahead. But the republicans. They want to go back to letting the super wealthy call the shots. They dont stand up for equal pay for women. They dont support paid family leave. They dont even really support refinancing student debt. Weve got to get this economy working for the vast majority of americans, not just for those at the top. Thats what i intend to do as president. Misconceptions when it comes to the disease. And, to clear things up we have Fareway Foods registered dietitian whitney packebush. Good to see you whitney. Whitney thanks, sheila. Good to see you too sheila. Today, were going to clear up three myths on what you should or should not eat if you have type i or type ii diabetes. The American Diabetes association actually has 10 myths on their website, but i just picked 3. The ones that are the most misconceptions from what i heard about diabetes. They are also the easiest to clear up as well. My food doesnt represent everything the best. These are the foods that i think will work as well. The first myth is that people with diabetes have to follow a very special diet or buy special products specifically for people with diabetes. The overall recommended diet for someone with diabetes is the same as the rest for us. Full of nonstarchy vegetables, whole grains, lean meat and things like that. Things to keep in mind with diabetes is our second myth and that has to deal with carbohydrates. So, carbohydrates are what affects your insulin. That is the issue with type 2. Sometimes people with diabetes especially when theyre just diagnoses think they cant have grains or other starchy foods. So, i have things while oatmeal, whole wheat pasta or bread and sweet potatoes. They think they cant eat those at all. But, its really important for people to keep eating their carbohydrates. What you really want to do is monitor and count your carbohydrates. That way you keep your blood sugar consistent throughout the day. Because these starchy foods are doing to raise your blood sugar so you probably dont want to eat a ton of these on an empty stomach and then dont eat for a little while. So, you can still choose these product just make sure you are getting the whole grain or whole wheat varieties. Thats just what we recommend for everyone. Sheila is there a certain gram level you want to focus on . Or, just does it vary person to person . Whitney no, it just varies person to person. I am not in a position to give out medical advice. Person to person you should know your carb level you need throughout the day. Sheila and, stay away from the bad sugars. Whitney yes, they will make your blood sugar spike really high. And, again these myths are what we kind of say for everyone when it comes to advice. Sheila and, theres one final one. Whitney the last one is fruit and low fat milk and yogurt are healthy i can eat as much as i want. While they are healthy and should be part of some healthy life style these also raise your blood sugar. These just make sure you are watching your portions and if your counting just make sure your adjusting your insulin appropriately. Just keep in mind its more than your pical grains and starches that raise your blood sugar. You can keep these things in but just be counting them appropriately and working with your Health Care Provider to work out your specific needs. Sheila thats the big things for sure. Of course you have 10 total myths that well link on our website if you go to ktiv. Com and go to our webpage to check out more on this weeks Centsable Health and other Centsable Health topics.
