And Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval may be on the short list. Cbs news has confirmed from a source close to this process that the white house is vetting governor sandoval. As a possible pick to replace justice antonin scalia. Sandoval would be an unusual pick for a democratic president. And that could shake the stalemate in the white house and the Governors Office both declined to confirm the story today. Sandovals Office Released this statement. Saying quote neither governor sandoval nor his staff has been contacted by or talked to the Obama Administration regarding any potential vetting for the vacancy on the u. S. Supreme court. However we do know that the governor met with senator harry reid in washington on monday. Senator reid says. Although he would prefer a more progressive nominee, he would support a sandoval nomination. Reid hes a good person. He has a great record, and hes been a tremendously good governor in spite of having to deal with some very big problems there. President obama has said hes looking for a nominee with impeccable legal credentials. And he hopes Senate Leadership will reconsider its position on blocking a hearing. You may recall that governor sandoval served as a judge for the Us District Court before he was elected governor. In campaign 2016. The dust is settling after Donald Trumps but disorganization with both the Nevada Democratic and republican caucuses has some voters wanting to go back to a primary system instead. But just whats the difference . Well, a primary is run and paid for by the state. Its where you just go in and cast your own vote. And its what we did up until 2008. But nevadas primary election is in june which gave us no say in selecting the president ial nominee. So senator harry reid lobbied the National Democratic party on our behalf. And republicans followed suit. Herzik reid got nevada on the list of early states in the nominating process. With him gone. Theres nobody in the state with that kind of clout to keep us there if the parties decide to move away from it. Going back to a president ialonly primary in february in addition to our regular primary in june would take a referendum and support of the legislature. Candidate visits weve seen this cycle. And push us back to june to vote. As the republican candidates look ahead to super tuesday, the democrats are still focused on south carolina.
