Good evening, everyone, im heather holmes. And im ken wayne. We believe in the south bay where San Jose Police shot and killed an man this afternoon after a pursuit. Heres new information on the shooting, debra. Reporter this shoot shooting caught a chase, in which the police say the suspect rammed three police cars. The 25yearold suspect was fired on and killed by two pursuing officers who say he refused their orders to surrender and behaved in a threatening manner. This is at the end of a chase which actually began many miles away in campbell. And it lasted some 2030 minutes at low and high speeds, during which they say he brandished a gun, threw articles out of a car, including a purse that had been recovered. At the end of the pursuit, the suspect was even driving on rims. One of his tires had been blown out. He was initially spotted for behaving suspiciously. If youre driving around, we believe youre involved in suspicious activity and then you point something at the officers and the officer believes its a gun and then youre Ramming Police cars, were thinking who are you, why dont you want to be caught . You must be a pretty dangerous person. Reporter how dangerous . What the suspects background is we have yet to find out. Again, this has san joses first officerinvolved shooting of the year and it is a fatality. A 25yearold man as yet unidentified. Theres some suggestion that he actually lives in this neighborhood, and thats why he fled here, because relatives have come out upset at how this ended. And it wasnt a San Francisco officer who fired the shot. Reporter yes, you can see a bullet hole in this fence near this mornings shooting. This morning, we are hearing that the suspect pulled a gun and San Francisco police say it was a Daly City Police officer who fired on that suspect fearing for his own life. San francisco and Daly City Police investigated for hours this morning following a pursuit that ended with a daly Daly City Policer shooting and killing a suspect. San Francisco Police say a daly Daly City Policer officer initially spotted the car at the intersection of barbara and john daily boulevard. One of their officers spotted the car in the city and gave chase. The driver brandished the fire arm at the officers. Reporter officers say the driver made a sharp turn from bay shore onto hester and jumped out of the car. The passenger surrendered immediately but the driver ran away with the gun. The Police Officers approached the fleeing driver who then raised his gun at the officers. A Police Officer fearing for his life discharged the fire arm at the suspect. That round hit the suspect in the chest. He died from his injuries. Neighbors say the road here loops around on itself making a get away nearly impossible. When they come through here, they have to come back up this way. Theres no other way to go. Reporter a San Francisco investigator says theyve questioned the passenger from this point in the car. Its unclear if hell be charged with anything in this case. Weve talked with Daly City Police and called them throughout the day. So far, they have not returned any of our calls. We are live in San Francisco, christian cappen, ktvu, channel 2 news. A United Airlines plane made a safe landing at San Francisco airport after the pilot declared an emergency. The airbus 319 was heading to sfo from vancouver. Shortly before landing, the pilot told controllers he had hydraulic problems. The plane landed safely but had to be towed to the gate. 107 passengers were on board but nobody was injured. Oakland police are investigating a double homicide. Police tell us they were called to apricot and glennheim streets for reports of gun shots just after 4 00 this morning. A man and woman were found in the street and both were pronounced dead at the scene. Police are still woshing to identify the victims and they have no arrests. The shootings marks oaklands 14th and 15th homicides this year. Police in pallo alto are also investigating a homicide. A 22yearold was killed and a juvenile was hurt in a shooting around 6 00 last night. Investigators say he argued with someone in a black vehicle and a person inside that vehicle then opened fire. Police tonight are still searching for the shooter. The Santa Clara Sheriffs Office says more than 1,000 guns were collected at a gun buyback today. Organizers say about 100 cars were lined up two hours before the buy back even started. The Sheriffs Office says most of the weapons collected were hand guns and rifles, which were worth about 100 each but several assault weapons were also turned in for 200. One participant said every gun collected counts. One in 100 might end up in the wrong hands and if you get that one off the street, thats a good thing. So far, no word on how much money was handed out during todays buy back, but sheriffs Officials Say they did not run out of money and even extended the hours of the event. The event was paid for by public funds for the county. In hayward, a road crew hit a gas main closing a major thoroughfare. Construction crews hit a twoinch gas line last night. A number of businesses, including restaurants, a gas station and a bar were evacuated while pg e worked to get the line capped. It took the utility about six hours to repair that line. A heelsberg man is in Critical Condition after a house fire this morning. Firefighters say they found 44yearold troy vocal lying outside his home. He had second and third degree burns over much of his body and flown to sacramento for treatment. Investigators say they believe it started in the kitchen, possibly in the stove. Relatives of a missing hayward woman spent the day looking for any sign of samantha tuya, she was last seen on february 19th. They said today she missed her scheduled visit with her sixyearold daughter. Police dont suspect foul play but they say her family is very worried because they say she has the mental capacity of a young teenager. Her family and volunteers spent the day posting flyers. There are reports tonight that a loop hole allowed an alleged santa cruz gunman to fall off the radar. He had a history of sex crimes before he fatally shot two Police Detectives on tuesday. They say he was accused of peeping through windows in three different cities and there were also accusations of rape by two women in hawaii and an attempted murder in oregon. The Santa Cruz Sentinel is reporting that police say he never appeared on two Law Enforcement computer databases that track criminals because he was only convicted of misdemeanors. The memorial for those two officers is scheduled for thursday, march 7 at noon at the hp pavilion in san jose. Its happening because congress chose this outcome over a fix on how to cut the deficit. President obama wants to close the fiscal gap with what he calls a balanced approach of spending cuts and tax hikes. Republicans, however, say they will not concede again on taxes after giving in during negotiations over the fiscal cliff at the new year. After a meeting with the president about the sequester, nancy pelosi was back in San Francisco addressing the coalition of black women. We spoke to the congresswoman about the impact of those cuts on bay area families. Talking about the sequester, what does that word mean . Reporter at a fundraiser for the San Francisco National Coalition of 100 black women, House Minority leader nancy pelosi talked about the importance of strong women and what it will take to bolster mothers and children. She says the sequester, billions of dollars in cuts now in effect, will devastate families across california, including thousands of children who wont benefit from Early Education through headstart. When those kids cant go to headstart, theyll be home, their moms will not be able to go to work. Think of what that does to the families. Reporter families can also expect student loan cuts and cuts in unemployment benefits. Proceeds from this afternoons team will go toward the groups employment and training program. The woman we talked with here say the cuts will disproportionately affect women and minority. Its devastating and so shameful that we cannot work in a bipartisan way. Reporter but the jobs continue. Instead of campaigning for higher taxes, the president should lead an effort to begin addressing our nations spending problem. Reporter but what theyre saying is, we want big oil over little kids in head start. Thats a debate that we have to take to the public. I dont think thats a blame game. Reporter the president seemed hopeful in his weekly address today. He said theres a caucus of common sense out there, and hell continue to seek out those leaders from both sides.
