Ktvus Azenith Smith is there. People were inside when this happened . Reporter i just got an update with the fire department. Everyone was able to get out safely. They searched the building and nobody was inside. We want to show you a picture, this was taken inside. This is what is looked like around 4 00 p. M. This afternoon. Right now crews are assessing the buildings stability and power has been shut off. Lets show you what it was like earlier. 4 00 p. M. This afternoon the safeway had a partial roof collapse over the prusiks. Employees, customers were inside. They were able to get out. A San Jose Police helicopter spotted a hole. There was one minor injury. A customer reinjured his leg yet refused medical transportation. Here is what he had to say when i asked if there is a risk of the roof collapsing again. The roof is hanging on. It could still collapse. That is why we have the building secure. We are not going to allow anybody to go in it. If the building collapses we dont have somebody getting trapped. That is why crews will be out here into the night, engineers will be out here to assess the damage to see how they could fix the roof. It is still under investigation how the roof collapsed but initial reports that it could be standing water. We will keep you posted. That is the latest from the safeway on capital expressway. Thank you. Boy was injured when he was trapped under a tree that was toppled by the storm. It fell on two students on the playground at gatewood elementary school. One boy was pinned for 15 minutes. Firefighters had to use chain saws to get him out. The storm also knocked down trees all over the bay area. Ktvus ann rubin in san jose where an effort is underway to clear the fallen trees. Reporter it is no easy task to move a tree of this size. Crews were out here all day trying to saw off the branches. As you can see there is a lot more work to be done. Reporter a massive oak tree fell in san jose crushing a house and an suv. In the willow glen area, a tree came crashing down. They were asleep. Myself and my three kids asleep at 5 45 a. M. We heard a big boom, crack, crash. It felt like an earthquake. It was very like oh, my goodness what was that. Reporter no one was hurt in either case and now crews have their work cut out for them. We are still doing jobs from the last round of storms we had. I imagine we will get busier. Reporter heavy rains and high winds made work difficult. Flooded roads slowed travel around san jose. The 280 on ramp one of many covered with standing water. Crews were hard at work trying to clear flooding that threatened homes. We have pumps going. We are making progress. Reporter residents were told they could evacuate volunteerly but the flood watt voluntarily but the floodwaters cleared out. I can go back in the house and decorate now. [ laughter ] reporter this neighborhood had been built up around the oak tree. They held their block parties underneath it and neighbors will be stood see it go. All right. Thank you. In berkeley the storm turned a street into a small lake and stranded one car. You can see the roof was submerged in floodwaters. Water rose to the top of the vehicle. There is no word on what happened to the drove. There was nobody in the driver. There was nobody in the car. Roads and freeways are inundated with all the rain that came down in a short period of time. Both sides of 101 were flooded today in south San Francisco. It is a trouble spot. Our crew was there as couple of cars became stranded and we saw a caltrans worker up to his knees in flood water clearing the storm drain. Was cleared at 2 50 p. M. This afternoon. In sonoma county, highway 12 is shut down tonight. One of the many trouble spots in an area that saw heavy down pours. Ktvus mike mibach is live now in napa with a look at the storm damage there. Mike . Reporter yeah. The napa river here, it just got about 6inches from reaching flood stage. That is close. It since started to recede. As have other bodies of water here. Including streams and creeks. You can tell the rain continues to fall but nothing like earlier today. Reporter the napa river, it has gone over its banks before and folks thought it could do it again. We havent seen this before. Reporter businesses dropped the sand bags and popped up signs telling customers sorry, not today. We know once it hits that we need start moving. He is talking about this marking locatedoon tree right there on his property located on a tree right there on his property. Flood stage at 16, we can take 17, maybe touching 18. Reporter flooded roadways, vineyards under water. Some of the sights of the december storm and one thing we saw besides the rain, no one taking too many chances. Reporter i was going to say the rain was starting to taper off here and then it just starts to pour again. Another thing i noticed, that is the cold temperature. Starting to get chill a out here. Pg e says the number of customers without power dropped in the past hour or so. Down to less than 17,000. San francisco has the bulk with 7400. South bay 2700. North bay 2500. The peninsula 3300 and the east bay a thousand people do not have power. We are getting a look at a transformer explosion in San Franciscos union square. Pg e says there was an incident at 7 30 a. M. At post and stockton streets. 90,000 customers in San Francisco were without power at the peak of the storm. Dozens of street lights went out and many stores in union square were without power. You can see how the outages starting from 5 00 a. M. This morning and spreading all over the bay area. The red indicates 5,000 customers without power. Orange between 500 and 5,000. And yellow is 50500 customers without power. Green is fewer than 50. A lot of schools canceled classes today because of the storm. Most but not all plan to reopen tomorrow. San francisco and oakland Public Schools are expected to be open. School districts in alameda, berkeley, fremont and hayward will also reopen tomorrow. However schools in the novato and south San Francisco and san bruno are among those that will remain closed. The snow is coming down fast. Take a look. With near white out conditions, interstate 80, chain requirements are in effect. Drivers must use chains to the donner lake interchange. The only vehicles that dont need chains are four wheel vehicles with snow tires on all four wheels. The unlikely place that turned into a surfing spot because of the high winds from the storm. And new at 6 00 p. M. A man pointing a gun at a protester in oakland last night. We know that man was an uncover police officer. Ktvus Eric Rasmussen just spoke to the Highway Patrol about this controversial incident. New at 6 00 p. M. Ktvu channel 2 news got off the phone with the california Highway Patrol. Officials are responding to this image of an under cover officer who pulled a gun on protesters last night in oakland. Ktvus Eric Rasmussen is live now at the chp where he got answers about the controversial incident. Reporter i got to tell you, we were moments from doing live interview with the commander of the chp but the chp canceled the interview however we were able to tuque the chief over the talk to the chief over the phone and she responding to the images showing one of his officers pointing his gun at demonstrators protesting police brootality last night. Brutality last night. Photos prompted an outrage. The chp says the officers were trying to identify someone in the crowd who vandalized a person in the business when their cover was blown. One of his officers was punched from behind. The chp said a woman kicked the officer in the head and that is when his partner pulled his weapon. Identified himself as a Law Enforcement officers [ indiscernible ] reporter do you support your officers decision to draw his gun . Yes, i do. I support his [ indiscernible ] his life was in jeopardy. He said i didnt know if i was going to live through this. Reporter critics told us they dont buy that explanation that the officer feared for his life. The chp said the District Attorney is now investigating what happened. The chp says it is not releasing the names of the officers that were involved in the incident. They dont want tocompromise to compromise other investigates. The officers have not been placed on leave. We spoke with a law professor who has greater concerns about the chps vomit in this kind of crowd involvement in this kind of crowd control. A bulldozer cleared a mudslide that spilled on to the road. It happened this morning near interstate 580. Crews shut down both lanes as they cleared up the mud. Slides are common on this road because of inefficient drainage in the area. A retaining wall came crashing down into a home. Behind me is what can happen when heavy rains cause a retaining wall to give way. These neighbors lived here for 10 years with a retaining wall separating their property. The retaining wall gave way and crashed into her home. She thought someone was breaking into her home so she called 911. They illo tagged both hopes and yellow tagged both homes. And now they are wondering what their next steps will be. I dont know. They probably have to leave for a while until we can get it off of their house. It is dangerous for them. I am hoping that my Insurance Company and my neighbors Insurance Company that they will resolve the problem. Reporter it is still unclear when anything will be done to fix the problem.
