KTVU KTVU FOX 2 News At 4 August 4, 2022

Have been more than 6600 new confirmed cases in the u. S. So far, the virus has been identified in nearly every state and with cases on the rise, the federal government is ramping up its response. There is definitely a short of supply. You know we are in a race the manufacturer has given been given marching orders to have more millions of doses available within the last week. California illinois and new york all declared a Public Health emergency officials in those states, saying they need help keeping up with the demand as lines continue to grow so happy i got it because i dont know. After going through covid i dont want to be susceptible to anything else that could hurt me and also just figure my face or body while some states are doing their part to get everyone vaccinated, others are taking a more targeted approach in states like florida and minnesota. Only those who have been exposed to the virus are eligible to get the monkey pox vaccine. The Sunshine State is now fourth in the nation for infections we have heard from individuals who have had their appointments for the monkey pox vaccine canceled unexpectedly right before they were supposed to go in because they were not eligible. The cdc says. The us is leading nations and monkeypox cases with more than 6300 confirmed so far in new york. Steve rappaport fox news for more inside and how the white houses declaration will help the response. Were joined by dr Peter Chen Hong Infectious Disease expert at u c s. F dr. Always appreciate your time youve been calling for a national strategy. The issue has obviously been vaccine supply. So how can this help bolster getting more shots in arms . I think everyones focused on vaccine because that is probably going to be a way out of this salvation. But we just dont have enough of it. Whether or not we used different strategies trading e card, more doses from the same vial administer it in a different way. It will only get us so far. So i think really, the way i think about the national, uh, designation as a Public Health emergency is the three ms for the benefits will get. The first thing is, of course, money money talks. We need money for personnel to be redistributed to really be laser focus on nipping this in the but the second m is from meds. A lot of focus has been on vaccines, but we have about two million doses of tea packs with which is really, really, uh, a good option for people while we wait for vaccines because we are going to see more cases. And if we can get an emergency use authorization that would be great. And then the third. Im of course, is metadata. Of course, i used matter because something had to begin with them. But um, it means that the different states and communities need to communicate with each other. Because right now were acting like vaseline on eyes. Uh jurisdiction doesnt even have to give their data to the c d. C we do during covid because it was a Public Health emergency, but not consistently during monkeypox. You just touched on this here. Here and were talking about the officials are considering does sharing or splitting a single dose multiple ways. Do you think thats the best thing to do is the time for that . You know, i think its a good response. Thats what the w choose also thinking, because theyre only 19 million doses. I think for the whole world, were taking a big share of that. Um so there has to be a way to think about splitting. The dose is, um, i think that immunologists are working on that. Make sure its of the right efficacy and i trust in a Public Health leaders when they do chose choose that route that will be sound and associated with a robust immune response. But its still not going to be in tough. We need millions and millions more. Even if you look at San Francisco, we have a fraction of the 70,000 shots that Public Health things we really need in San Francisco doctor in addition to the three ms that you talked about part of this declaration is also driven towards education and awareness. How important is that peace, especially as the Lgbtq Community feels like theyre being stigmatized here. Its a huge deal, greg. We already have reports of flat bottom ist and other parts of the country, refusing to draw blood from monkey pox patients, which makes no sense from an infection. Uh just some, you know, transmission perspective if youre drawing blood from other Infectious Diseases like hiv is completely safe. If you make the right choices, we have reports of people on trains taking pictures of people they think of monkeypox and posting it on social media. We have probably reports of people are free to hug people because theyre afraid of catching monkey box. So i think de stigmatizing is something thats going to be very up front and center, because what drives uh you know, hate and stigma is fear and anxiety. So if we use science to help educate everyone has to, really how you get monkey pox and what happens. I think that goes a long way in terms of that trickle down effect. Yeah, we just spent the last two years going through a pandemic. And here we are talking about another outbreak. Granted, monkeypox is not on the scale that we have seen with covid19. But when you talk about the tests, the vaccines the treatment. Do you think all of those lessons are going to help better contain the monkeypox outbreak . Given what weve learned with covid . Well i think, christina we feel the first test, which is that speed is everything. And i think we didnt act enough. The longer you wait, the more expensive its becoming, because if you think about what happened in me or or or april when they were a trickle of cases, um you could have used very few vaccines to then. Cordon off the area. But again they were challenges. But the longer we wait, the more and more vaccines youre gonna need, so it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy of doom. But, you know on the bright side. Having this designation is going to make a big difference. Absolutely dr peter chin hung, Infectious Disease specialist at ucsf. Thanks so much for joining us always appreciate your time. Thanks so much bragging, christina.
