Oakland police now say a conflict between a group and a gang led to the mass shooting at the king of states campus on fontaine street wednesday. It appears that the shooters came into entry of the scho an individual or target and they begin to fire investigators dont get know who they were specifically targeting. But they say at least two shooters, maybe more used handguns with illegal extended magazines. Their idea. Identity is still not known. We also know that there were over 30 rounds fired on this campus. That is wholly unacceptable. We thank god that many more students were not injured as a result of this action, the chief says officers wasted no time going room by room, breaching classroom doors. We learned all six adults shot were connected to the school. Two of the victims are students. One is a counselor, one a Security Guard. The other two employees. Three of them are still in the hospital following yet another incident of gun violence in oakland. We will provide healing. And support and continue to work to change the conditions both at the Community Level and the individual level. To ensure that people do not result to violence. This shooting has raised questions about school security. Police are unsure of the front school doors were unlocked or wide open. The School District commended teachers and staffs quick thinking to lockdown classrooms at the staff, especially but also the students acted heroically yesterday in in getting this situation to a point where the peoplely affectt injured, were protected and safe campus. Will stay closed, at least for now. The key focus for investigators is reviewing video and othere out who these shooting suspects are and the gang. They may be tied to. We believe that our city, and well continue to follow up on leads to identify those responsible. Chief armstrong said today that back in august there was another incident at this campus and it did involve a firearm. But someone was arrested. But in this case, there is no indication that there was any warnings and the threats that are shooting would occur at this school. For now, it remains closed as there is a lot of repair work that has to be done following the shooting. And the subsequent search. My colleague henry lee will be joining us at five with a deeper look at the victims, but for now reporting live in oakland, brooks jarocz ktvu fox two news. Brooks the School District spokesman, really going into details today about how much damage was done there on the campus is Law Enforcement scoured each of those buildings looking for the suspected shooters. Its really a testament to their work, as those Law Enforcement officers rushed in and wasted no time. They even said that they didnt wait for the keys. They were just going room by room and breaking open the doors, making sure it was safe, making sure all the kids the teachers, the faculty were moved out of there to a safe location, and obviously those repairs will need to be made now, brooks jarocz thank you. For more perspective on yesterdays School Shooting and the recent spike in killings in oakland. I talked earlier with the chief of the Citys Department of violence prevention. This is an agency that does Community Outreach in the hopes of deterring people from picking up guns to settle conflicts. Guillermo cespedes tells me this approach is effective. But he says more federal funding is needed for the program. Organized doing despite what were hearing, um, a tremendous job at putting together a comprehensive strategy with local resources, and this is a as all mayors across the country are saying this is a bigger problem than just oakland. We have facing and National Crisis around the issue of violence. Do you look at what happened yesterday and see that maybe as some sort of an Inflection Point in in in in the city. Where where this might prompt some more action than weve seen in the past. My job is to focus on block by block neighborhood by neighborhood. I dont do the federal work. My blog is the family around the corner. And so to that end, um weve been very busy this past few weeks would actually been very busy since july, 17th right after we finished. Um ive come down nights strategy. So um, Inflection Point, um, its another Inflection Point. I think weve been watching the post covid pandemic on top of the pandemic. For two years now and not just tracking oakland. But whats happening in urban america across the country . Do you look at a period like what we have seen over the past week and think that there needs to be a shift in the strategy . And if so, what does that look like . No, i dont think the strategy needs to be shifted. I think that the resources to amplify the strategy needs to be needs to be expanded, for example. Were at seven of the daughters. The high schools with the most levels of violence. For data. This occurred in a school. There was not one of the target schools because it didnt have that history of violence. We dont have the resources to cover every high school. Now, having said that i have to be very mindful not to just simply say to the public that we need more resources. This strategy itself has been identified, um, past. Um, the second best strategy across the country. Um for a city very small, and if you look at the amount of funding it is a very, um um its a strategy that its were spending less money than many cities. Um so no, its we need more resources. The strategy is evidence proven evidence based assessment is tells me the department of violence prevention in oakland has a staff of 30 people, and only about half of them do direct work out in the field. He says. More people on the ground doing that outreach work will truly help to make a dent in the citys homicide rate. You know what . For today, the dublin pleasant imparts station has reopened following a hazmat incident that temporarily shut down operations. Police closed that station around one this afternoon with employees and riders evacuated from the station. Firefighters and hazmat crew arrived on scene with employees telling ktvu that smoke near the base of the escalators prompted the station closure. We later learned from sources on the scene that a battery left inside a trash can was smoking. Our cameras captured that hazmat crew working to ensure the area was safe. I understand like if its hazardous for us to be in there that they keep us waiting, but im just eager to go visit my family. The station was cleared in the platform reopened riders around 2 30 this afternoon. There was no word from bart officials who left that battery behind or what caused it to emit smoke.
