If we can save even a few lives, its worth it. New recommendations were announced to reduce the number of newborn to die from sudden infant death syndrome also known as sids. Joining us now to talk more about these guidelines is dr. Larry. Thank you for joining us. Lets talk a little bit about sids. When does oppose the greatest risk . Sids is sudden infant death syndrome. Children especially between one month and one year die unexplainably. Say what an autopsy and tests and we dont know why it happens. It is also called crib death. It often happens in sleep at night. These new recommendations came and were trying to figure out what can we do to prevent this. When it happens, there is nothing you can do. We will make we want to do everything we can to prevent this. Lets get to the safe sleep guidelines. The first one thats a big change is that parent should share a room with their child. Why is that . Its an association. Several studies have come out that have shown that when children are in the same room and this is not the same bed, it is not bed sharing which we do not recommend. When they are in the same room, its associated with a lower risk of sudden infant death syndrome. That is something you can do to lower the risk not in the same bed. They recommend the infant be in a crib or bassinet. They need their own sleep space. Right. When theyre in the same bed, that can increase the risk. We dont know exactly what happens with this but theres factors associated with it. In the early 90s, this is when we emphasize sleeping on the back. That seem to make a difference. A brought the rate from one in 1000 to about half reducing a 50 . Im sure pediatricians are hopeful that issuing the statement will further drive that down and to prevent what is the number one cause of death in children between one month and one year in age. Some of the other recommendations but the child on a firm surface. A tightfitting sheet. Crib bumpers, blankets and soft toys out of the crib. If you think about it, we lump sum of these other things together. Anything that could potentially of 60 at them or suffocate them, you want that stuff out of the bed. So they are sleeping comfortably on a firm service. Surface. The things we know from research, we want to make sure that is exercise. The new one is room sharing where they are in the same room. You mentioned a reduction in the number of children affected by sids. Theyre hoping these new recommendations will lower that risk by as much as 50 . And 2014 the last year where we have numbers, 1400 children die of sids. Again, that is the number one risk of your child between one month and one year. Dr. Larry, thank you for taking the time to talk to us. We hope to parents take these recommendations to heart. A new study firm a Bay Area News Group is saying that Sexual Assault on campuses are up. Students are not always notified when theres an assault. Heres why. Reporter most of the students we talked to say they would like to know every time there is a Sexual Assault reported on campus. In the last week students got to alerts letting them know about two reported Sexual Assaults that happen in the fraternity. Under federal guidelines, Campus Police everywhere must alert students when any crime including rape or Sexual Assault poses a threat to the student body. There is some discrepancy when an immediate how an immediate threat is determined. Five major bay campuses were looked at. The study found that stanford and uc berkeley had the biggest gap when it came to the number of sexual offenses reported and the number of time students were alerted. In 2015 stamford had 39 cases of reported sexual offenses and only one alert was sent out. Uc berkeley have 45 reported sexual offenses and 11 alerts were sent out. I think it is important for students to know if they are safe on campus are not a lot of us get the alerts and we dont understand the full danger unless it happens to someone close to west. Too many crime alerts might make students numb to the problem. Victims advocates say its better to keep the student body informed and raise everyones awareness about the problem of Sexual Assault.
