Henry lee caught up with the new part police chief. What is he doing about these new assault reports . Reporter has officers have made arrests and most of these cases. He has heard the message that they want to see more officers on patrol. There have been seven rates reported on bart property for the first half of 2017 which is the same number reported for 2014 2015 at 2016 combined. This is a low number considering the number of people that go to bart every day. Reporter there up and 28 Sexual Assaults so far in 2017, the same number for all of 2016. Its too many in any community and any transit district. The police chief said part of the solution is proactive policing. Is working on fast tracking the hiring of more officers to fill 40 vacancies. We will look at ways to be more proactive and to be more visible within the system. The key to that is hiring personnel. Reporter last month bart announced their trains are equipped with surveillance cameras and not decoys. The footage cannot be reviewed in realtime, only later after a crime occurs trying to monitor every camera live is impossible when you look at the thousands of cameras in the system. Our concern is that people feel safe and feel like its not a place for the going to be a victim of this type of crime. Reporter riders that we spoke to had different thoughts. We live in an urban community. It is just sarben. Just be aware of your surroundings. People should be able to go on Public Transportation without having to worry about being assaulted for people like myself, it is concerning. I have felt uncomfortable in some situations sometimes reporter after the jeep arrived in may, bart stopped issuing daily logs with details on crimes the agency said it didnt want to offend writers of color. Bart confirmed they heard the criticism loud and clear and will now once again release that information. Reporter rape and Sexual Assault are often underreported. It is possible the data released by bart maybe lower than what is actually occurring. That the police chief say anything about a timetable on hiring these officers quick he did say there are 40 vacancies currently. There is a process. They hire and train these officers. They want to get that accelerated so the officers can join the department sooner rather than later. Im sure a lot of people would like to see more officers out there. More and more people are finding drug needles in public spaces, especially in the bay area. The Associated Press that that in march alone, more than 13,000 syringes were found in San Francisco compared to 2900 during that same month last year. You may remember back in april the board of supervisors president propose creating a task force to look into the idea of safe injection sites. Places for drug users can shoot up legally. We are joined now i done. I apologize for my voice. Can i get your reaction to the number of needles collected in just that one month . 29,000 which is an average of 935 every single day. Well, i wish i could say that im surprised by that number, but im not. I get email complaints from my constituents on a regular basis about needles found. Not just the major corridors, commercial corridors, but neighborhoods and places where you think you wouldnt like parks and playgrounds. We have a lot of folks who are out in San Francisco cleaning up the streets every single day. This continues to be a challenge. We need to do better as a city. How does the city plan to address the growing drug use . One of the things that we do is the Needle Exchange program, with those programs they have folks who also clean up the streets and try to collect some of these needles. Working in places like vancouver , they have space injection sites. What were doing is looking at a task force to understand a safe injection site and how it might work in a place like San Francisco. What do we need to do . Will this reduce the number of needles we see out on the street . With the save lives and money . In vancouver, over 3500 people were referred to detox and not back in the system. In the first year they had 1. 8 million in savings from City Services as a result of opening up a site in vancouver. I do think that we should look at the data. We should look at where it is working on the possibility that this may be something that could potentially work here. I do not want to see the needles all over the street. We need to do better as a city. This could potentially be a solution to help us to so. Give us an update. This task force has started looking into the viability of a safe injection site. How far along is this task force, and what happens next they have been meeting for about a month and a half. I will be attending the next meeting. They are expected to wrap up and get information from the public. Hopefully by the end of august. And then they will issue a report for the board of supervisors and the mayor. Sometime in september with a recommendation on how to move forward. All right. Thank you so much for joining us. I think most people will agree that right now San Francisco is one giant unsafe injection site. Anything to change the status quote. Thank you so much for taking the time. A bill moving through the state Assembly Calls for requiring dogs, cats and rabbits sold the bed stores come only from shelters or rescue organizations. The pet rescue and adoption act is intended to reduce the number of animals run in state run shelters. Turning we now joining me now we will learn about the new bill that hasnt been passed yet. Is currently in the assembly. It is in the senate. It went to the assembly and is currently being processed through the senate. Hopefully, we will get everyones approval so that we can ensure that pet stores are acting responsible and rehoming animals that need a home and not necessarily supporting puppy mills or industrial pets. Okay. The idea is we have shelters, many of them are exploding with overcrowded conditions and too many pets in there. Some of them are being put down and some shelters across california. Most of the bay area once or no kill shelters. You want to avoid animals being put down what people are buying a pet when there are nice and healthy pets that could be euthanized. 8485 is active in over 30 siri eight cities currently. This makes sense to continue to give people who were looking for pets an opportunity to save a life and not support when you purchase a puppy from a pet store, you can have a questionable backgroun
