To a major animal rehabilitation underway nearly 700 sick pelicans have been admitted to rehab facilities across california since may. Jd bergeron, the ceo of International Bird rescue has been a part of that project. Hes joining us now live here on the five oclock news and jd thanks so much for taking the time here. How many pelicans is International Bird rescue taken in what part of california are they coming from . Yeah thanks for having us on we have taken in 347 birds. So about half of them that have come into care since the beginning of this, which started in about may we have a center in los angeles, which takes care of southern california, and we have a Northern California center, which had a much smaller number. So really, the majority of these birds do come from san diego upwards to central california. What is happening here . Are we rented . These birds are sick. But this is not some type of illness. What kind of condition are the birds in . And when they are being brought in unfortunately, its becoming a bit like a mystery tv show. Um, the one thing that they all have in common is symptoms of starvation, emaciation dehydration, very typical things to birds that are not eating enough. There does not seem to be any evidence of a contagion of a contaminant or any other similar thing that can cause a large scale problem like this. The real question here, though, is that the fish that they prefer to eat and the temperatures of water that those fish prefer to be in actually seemed to be normal. So it is something of a mystery, though there are a number of theories of what might be causing it. The only thing they have in common is that starvation and then a lot of them have secondary injuries that are consistent with making extra efforts to try to find food chasing fishing boats getting entangled in fishing line or even landing on highways Pacific Coast highway and getting hit by cars. We heard that first theory from the California Department of fish and wildlife, saying that the primary i guess the primary note here. The primary finding was starvation. But as you mentioned, these anchovies are pretty much in full supply. So that really kind of doesnt really make sense. But what do you think of them, also saying that strong winds in april and may may have made it difficult for them to forge. Do you think that could be a theory that could pan out . You know, its hard to say theres any reason to discount any theory until you can prove it wrong. I mean, fortunately, we were able to rule out Avian Influenza and similar contagion. Or uh um, uh , poisoning of something called domoic acid. However i dont know that personally, i find the wind theory any stronger than the others simply because pelicans have evolved over many, many, many thousands of years and have faced winds of Great Variety one. In theory i heard is perhaps there was a particularly strong population of pelicans this year, um, competing one of the things that was observed by birder. Friends of mine is that the birds as they started appearing in large numbers in central california, like monterey bay. They were seeing large numbers of them collecting on the rocks, disturbing some of the other nesting birds there, and it seems to be that once they reached the Northern California area, most of them were finding sufficient food. Its still remains kind of a mystery to be reso
