Right now in california a felons right to vote is restored after he or she completes their parole. Now opponents of the legislation say that the right to vote is the appropriate punishment for committing a felony. But several organizations say that the restriction is an outdated carryover. California is one of four states that restores Voting Rights after the completion of parole. And in ten states someone with a felony record may lose their right to vote forever. The arizona one, there is just a check box that says im a felon. I cant do jury duty. Reporter many former felons are confused on their rights after incarceration. Tiffany was incarcerated in arizona after finishing parole in 2012. She moved to San Francisco. She registered to vote and has yet to cast a ballot. I think that i was more scared about showing up and then telling me i couldnt vote. Reporter not knowing if their rules could cost someone their freedom. This is an indictment from north carolina. Here a felon still on parole would vote, violating the parole. The indictment states that he did not restore his right of citizenship prior to voting. Did you complete it and that it has little to do with punishment. Reporter they agree with none, calling it a franchise. That their bill on the governors desk would allow low level felons to write back. It is strongly opposed by the californias sheriff association. Donny youngblood believes that there needs to be consequences and people held accountable for their criminal actions. I think that they deserve the right to vote because all of these things are still affecting me, even if i am a felon or a former felon. That it is not like the taxes dont affect me. Im still paying the same taxes that everyone else does. Reporter she believes that they would read up on their ballot measures and vote. And you have a lot of time on your hands to make a difference. Reporter they believe that people behind bars may not affect their president ial election, but they could make a difference in local politics. We could probably dictate who will be getting elected for stuff like district attorney. That we could determine who will be sitting on our school board to determine who sits on our console. You cannot possibly conceive that it will be occurring to hold Public Office that most people who see this, they have no idea just how important that it really is. Until they actually lose it. Reporter and now if Governor Brown signs that bill, only lowlevel felons in county jails would have the right to vote. The law would not apply to those serving in the state or federal prison. Today the house of representatives passed a controversial bill allowing the families of 9 11 victims to sue the saudi arabia in u. S. Court. Senate passed a legislation back in may and it now goes to president obama who said that he would veto it. However that congress may have enough votes to override the veto because democrats as well as republicans, they support that bill. There has been suspensions that the government, they may have been connected to the september 11 attacks. 15 of the 19 hijackers, they were from saudi arabia. Critics of the bill say that they would damage an important relationship though with a key ally in the middle east. Well for those that grew up after the twin towers fell that the world is a very different place with a legacy of fear anxiety and permanent changes in the daily routines of the millions of americans. Many of todays High School Students though, they are too young to really remember 9 11. Ann rubin explains that it presents a challenge for educators. How to make the terrorist attacks relevant and relatable. Reporter most of todays High Schoolers were toddlers when it happened. Some werent even born. And so for them 9 11 is just another chapter in their history books. It is not very significant because i was very young at the time that i was only two years old. But in history class, we do take moments of silences, as we will be talking about it. Reporter but at san jose high school, teachers say that we need to do more. As they would try to engage their students by sharing the personal experience and someone that would enlist it in the air force when he was not much older than the students are now. And a year later, 9 11 would happen. And that it is truly affecting me because now im in the front lines literally. Reporter when he teaches the subjects, he brings in the uniform, showing their personal photos, trying to explain what it was like to be there. You can show the artifacts and the examples for them to grasp what happened in 9 11. Reporter over at college prep, its a group of students who were trying to help educate their peers. Each year that the Young Americans for freedom club would place flags on the quad, one for one life lost during the terrorist attacks. When you see the hill over here covered in flags, it hits you. It is like thats a lot of people. Reporter the idea to get teens to engage and ask questions. It is important to remember our parents and our grandparents who went through those to have those experiences, trying to remember them and the pain that they went through. Reporter they say it is just a question of helping the students see the impact on everything from the economy to the security. When they cannot remember what things were like before. It is important to just not gloss over it like any other day. Because it is definitely like one of the key turning points in modern american history. However facebook blocked the image last week when it was posted on a norwegian authors page saying that it violated facebooks policy of nudity. Well that norwegian Prime Minister then posted the photo on her profile and facebook deleted that image as well. And they will send sensors to help create a three dimensional picture of the area around the fault. Scientists say that the picture will tell them which ones of those nearby faults are connected to the hayward fault. We need to know if they are connected and how wide that zone of connected fault is. Other faults out here are connected to the hayward fault too that were going to look at.
