Flight made an Emergency Landing in oakland after the pilot discovered trouble with that planes landing gear. The plane took off from oakland bound for chicago. Several passengers reported hearing a big grinding noise and a jolt as the plane took off. Then just like the flight today, the plane had to burn fuel over the Central Valley before returning to oakland international. No one was hurt. A blast of chilly Winter Weather is keeping temperatures across the bay area lower than average. This is what it looked like in alamo this morning. Frost covering the golf course. Along the iron horse trail, people didnt let the cold weather keep them from their walk. Mark tamayo has a look at weather. Very cold temperatures in the 30s and even 20s to start out sunday morning. Records toward oakland airport, they bottomed out at 30 degrees. The old record was 31. Mountain view, 29 degrees. Old record, 32 degrees. Heres a general map of the bay area showing you the overnight lows this morning. Look at the 20s up in the north bay. Santa rosa, napa, even San Francisco in the upper 30s. 39, san jose 30 degrees and a string of 20s for livermore, antioch, concord, toward fairfield as well. Outside right now, we do have high clouds on the increase as a weather system moves in from the north. But with the cool air mass still in place, temperatures still very cold out there. Right now, already in the 40s. In fact, all afternoon we were talking about 40s for afternoon highs. Now, we do have a few changes out there, as you can see on the satellite and radar, with clouds, even a few rain showers. You will see green on here, but a lot of this is falling way up above our heads and drying before it reaches the surface. I did see a light rain report toward hayward, even snow mixed in for the hills, up above 2000 feet. Theres a chance we could have flurries here. Some activity on the radar. Once again, not all of this reaching the ground. We still have scattered showers in the forecast for tonight and a few more changes for tomorrow as well. Several thousand homes in the east bay are without heat on this cold night because of a gas service outage. Those homes are in Discovery Bay in eastern contra costa county. Pg e reports the outage is currently affecting about 6200 customers. The utility said earlier those customers could expect to be without gas service for 36 hours. We are told a Warming Center is in the process of being set up at Timber Point Elementary School on newberry lane. With temperatures below freezing across most of the bay area, many people woke to the coldest morning of the year and it didnt warm much during the day. Christien kafton shows us more. Reporter subfreezing overnight temperatures turned this golf course in alamo into a winter wonderland, covering the greens with white. Signs of the cold snap were common in the south bay, peninsula, north bay, and east bay. At lake merritt in oakland, runners braced against the cold and got their hearts pumping to warm up on this chilly morning. In lafayette, most people were enjoying the chill in the air. Its a little bit cold. Its nice. Its fun. Reporter it wasnt just a cold start to the day. Here in Lafayette Reservoir at noon, it only reached 43 degrees. Im here with one of my sons. My other son is up on the bike. Were excited for the cold weather because well be hitting the mountains in tahoe in a couple of days. Were excited for the rain and the snow. Reporter parents say the cold weather has kept the kids cooped up and they needed a little outside time, even if some didnt embrace the cold. We did need to get out and get the kids some exercise. Were excited to be out here today. Reporter it was the same for pet owners. Put on his jacket and put on his leash, hes game to go. Reporter its not just pets that needed an extra layer. At downtown walnut creek ace hardware, experts are reminding people to cover their plants. Best thing for plants, you have two options here. This is called cloud cover. This is something you can put onto the plant beforehand and then you can cover it up with this. This is basically a blanket. Reporter and the cold weather can take a toll on exposed pipes. The video is disturbing. The video is recorded in fairfield in front of a home near texas and pennsylvania streets earlier this month. Police say the woman throwing the pug is named brandy chen and they are trying to find her. They believe the dog has been abused before. She was recently seen walking down the Business District in fairfield and she apparently had the dog by the tail and she was swinging it around. She got into a fight with her boyfriend, fiance, i dont know, she choked the dog. Took it and threw it. Basically. Authorities believe chen is hiding in the vallejo area. Once located, she will likely face felony animal cruelty charges and the dog named ben will be taken from her. The fire bombing of a mosque in tracy is being investigated as a hate crime. Someone threw a molotov cocktail yesterday over a gate at the Islamic Center on large road. It landed near a side door, with minimal fire dablg. No one was hurt. But mosque leaders say had the fire bomb landed closer to the building, the damage could have been much worse. I was actually astonished. Ive been living in tracy for 15 years. Weve never had any incidents. Its very clear to me its a hate crime. A Research Group at a California State University found that antiislammic hate crimes in the u. S. Have tripled since the terrorist attacks in paris and in san bernardino. Earlier this month, someone set fire to a mosque in riverside county. A 23yearold man now faces hate crime charges in connection with that fire. Firefighters are gaining ground on a wildfire burning in southern california. The fire is now 70 contained and evacuation orders for dozens of homes have been lifted. Also, a 50mile stretch of highway 101 and a portion of Pacific Coast highway are back home. The winddriven blaze started christmas night and burned more than 1235 acres. Fists hope to have the fire fully contained in the next few days. Investigators say it was likely caused by a downed power line. People in north texas are spending this Holiday Weekend mourning and cleaning up after deadly storms ravaged the area. A series of tornadoes ripped through the suburbs of dallas, leaving more than two dozen people dead. As Garrett Tenney reports, in some places, the storms left behind little more than rubble. Reporter local officials tell us there are still a lot of people unaccounted for. Search and rescue teams have been working since last night, searching through debris for anyone trapped in their homes. Theres a lot of ground for them to cover. The damage from these tornadoes stretches about 40 miles across the dallas metro area and includes more than 600 structures. Most of these were Single Family homes. The storm blew roofs off, threw cars from driveways in the living rooms and completely devastated neighborhoods, filled with families still celebrating christmas and the holidays. Despite the destruction, many folks are just grateful to be alive. By the grace of god. Im really grateful, you know. My wife works not far from here. If i didnt call her, she would be here right now, my kids, too. Lot of things. Reporter city leaders are still trying to complete assessments of damages, but say dozens of people were injured and at least 11 people were killed in the storms overnight. Five of those deaths happened at this busy intersection in the city of garland, where Officials Say a tornado made a direct hit, completely crushing several cars and tossing others off the road entirely. That same twister then moved east and caused absolute devastation in the city of rowlett, where the mayor says its amir cal that nobody was killed. I think the thing that actually saved us is the fact that we had plenty of warning. The sirens went off multiple times. We put calls out to the citizens. And i think the bottom line is thats why we were able to not have any fatalities at this point. Sadly, even his folks are trying to get back to their homes to start to clean up more storms, possibly severe ones forecasted to hit the area later today. In washington, Garrett Tenney, fox news. Former Oakland Athletics outfielder Dave Henderson died at his home in seattle this morning. Always a fan favorite, henderson joined the as in 1988 and was known for interacting with fans in the outfield. He spent six years with the as and helped the team win the 1989 world series. Henderson also played with the seattle mariners, boston red sox, Kansas City Royals and the San Francisco giants. The 57yearold had a kidney transplant about a month ago, but it is reported that the star player apparently died of a heart attack. There is outrage tonight in chicago, over yet another Deadly Police shooting that killed two people. Police were called early yesterday morning on a report of a domestic disturbance. They say 19yearold kenton la greer pulled a bat when he was shot and killed. His aunt was also killed. Police are asking the city to remain peaceful. While im tempted to feel hate for all Chicago Police officers right now, i know this is a time where, a difficult time we got to get past in our city. This needs to stop. No mother should have to bury her child. No mother. No mother should have to bury her child. La greers mother says her son had a mental illness, but adds he was never violent. The shootings come amid intense scrutiny of Chicago Police following the shooting death of a chicago teenager by a police officer. That officer is charged with first degree murder in that teens death. A journalist from the bay area being held prison inner iran was reportedly allowed to see his wife and mother on christmas day. The mother of Washington Post reporter jason rizion tells the post she spent several hours with him on friday. His mother and wife received permission from an Iranian Court to make the visit. The 39yearold reporter from marin has been in iranian custody for more than a year, convicted on espionage charges. Now to the race for the white house, president ial candidates on both sides of the aisle are gearing up for the final days of campaigning in 2015. They are looking toward the start of the primaries and caucus in just a few weeks. Heres the latest from new york. Reporter with just a little more than a month to go before the first primary caucus, the president ial candidates took to the sunday morning talk shows and some are coming out swinging. What trump does is he complains about everything. Its a really good top of the story, you know, trumps rising and everything. Wait till we start voting. Reporter the latest fox news poll showed donald trump polling 39 among republican primary voters, but trump says despite how others may paint him, his campaign is not all about anger. Im not tapping into the anger, and some people have said im doing that, but ill tell you what, if you have another four years of a hillary, that kind of thinking, were not going to have a country. Reporter most of the campaigns are giving no signs of slowing down. I get so amazed at people think this is all settled. Its never settled this far out. Why dont we wait until the voters mat decision. Then well have a better picture of where this is headed. Reporter on the democratic side, senator Bernie Sanders is trying to get back on message, saying he wants to put the data breach controversy behind him. There were two breaches. We threw it up on one and the other one, we did the right thing. I think for the american people, there are far more important issues, you know, having to do with the disappearance of the american middle class. So i think on both sides, we would like to focus on the real issues. Reporter the campaigns will be in full force as 2015 comes to an end. Hillary clinton heads back to new hampshire. Very cold day, as weve been talking about. Good day to sit in a movie theater. Well have to make plans to see the star wars movie. Typically its cold in the morning, recovering nicely in the afternoon. Today it was frigid all day long, even at 2 00 and 3 00. 40s out there for afternoon highs. That will set the stage for another cold night. But no freeze warnings in place for the bay area. Heres the national perspective, as you can see on live Storm Tracker 2. Storm tracker 2 showing activity centered toward texas. You can see this heavy rain towards part of the south here. Thats going to be a factor later today and into monday. Out here, you can see activity on the radar. Lots of green showing up. But i will say a lot of this is not reaching the ground. You could have a few scattered light showers out there. If this were to reach the ground, we could be talking about a few flurries in the bay area. Its that cold. In fact, we could have a few snow flurries up in the mountains, mainly up above the 1500 feet mark. Like we said, most areas reporting cloud cover. You could have a few light showers underneath some of this green. Probably a better bet later on this evening between 8 00 and 10 00. But nothing too major out there. Current numbers, of course, the big chill is the big headline. San jose at 47 degrees. Already in the lower 40s for livermore, walnut creek and concord and San Francisco in the mid40s as well. The high clouds on the increase. Right now, we do have mostly cloudy skies over the bay area. Overnight lows first thing tomorrow morning, i think well start out with clouds as well. No freeze warnings, but cold numbers out there. At least were not talking much in the way of 20s. Clear lake, 29. Lots of lower 30s, near freezing for santa rosa and petaluma and napa. Right around the rim of the bay, upper 30s there. Inland, youll find a string of low to mid30s for livermore, antioch, brentwood. San jose, 34 degrees. Milpitas in the mid30s. Warming up a little bit tomorrow to 42 degrees, but still pretty cold out there. So heres a system moving across northern california. With that tonight we could be tracking more scattered showers between now and midnight. Cold air remains in place. Were still talking cold mornings over the next few days, but a dry weather pattern will develop. Looks like well wrap up the rest of the year after tonight with a dry weather pattern that will take us right through new years eve, new years day, into next weekend as well.
