What was going on before this happened . Its way too early to talk about motive. Were still only three hours into our investigation. Our investigators are just now getting on the scene to map out exactly what happened. As i stated earlier based on that broadcast, thanks to some great witnesses, the Richmond Police department detained some possible suspects so were working to learn what occurred. Reporter we have video of a silver dodge on a tow truck in a residential neighborhood and apparently thats the suspect vehicle. Correct. Reporter can you talk about how they were apprehended . No, all i can say is we have some great witnesses so that the Police Department was able to detain that witness. Reporter without any resist if. Im not sure what occurred during that arrest. Reporter so these were 911 calls coming from people on the freeway who had to be completely floored at what they were witnessing at 3 30 in the afternoon. Absolutely. We dont want people to get involved. We want you to be a good witness. In this case we had some great witnesses. Thats what led to us detain these possible systems. Reporter we know from past shootings on freeways that these are frequently gang relayed. I know it is early in your investigation but could you talk about what dynamic soften at play when these happen . Yeah. I mean, every incident we handle individually, whether we link them up later, its up to the investigators. Right now its really early to say. Right now we dont believe theres any danger to the public. So what we want people to take away there this, a, bea good witness, dont get involved. B, were Still Closing eastbound 80. Were well into the evening commute. If you havent left work yet and can stay late this is a great day to do it. Your alternate is 24. Reporter those have to be jammed. Absolutely. People need to pack their patience, maybe have some dinner near your workplace. Reporter to recap we have two people hospitalized after a freeway shooting on eastbound 80 in richmond. Three people detained as possible suspects in a residential neighborhood. They were identified by witnesses here on the freeway who saw what happened, called 911, called in a description, and so at least they have made progress in this investigation. But the bottom line for drivers, this freeway is going to remain closed for another hour or more. So this is definitely a bad night to be coming out of oakland and headed east toward sacramento. If you can find alternate routes or use Public Transportation or delay your travel that would definitely be the way to go. Back to you. Deborah, authorities have said they believe this was a targeted shooting. Do we know at this point why they think that . Reporter they have said they think that based on what they know about the suspects, the possible suspects that they are questioning now, and what they know about the two victims. They wont go beyond that other than to say that this would appear that these parties know each other. In the past, as i mentioned in the interview, we have found these are often gang related. They arent going that far with it other than to say they know it each other, its targeted, and its not ran document clearly, though, it still puts innocent drivers making their way along the freeway in incredible danger to have bullets flying on this major public thoroughfare. We did see pictures of that suspect vehicle that dodge where they arrested those three people or took them into custody. Did Authorities Say whether that dodge vehicle was a stolen car . Reporter they havent said yet. I think its still too early in the investigation as they are trying to connect all those dots. Deb before we let you go, do we know how many shots were fired . Also, thats pretty impressive for that person in the red volvo to stop and try to help out those two who were injured. I dont know whether you have had a chance to see that person. Do we know male, female, anything at all about that person . Reporter i asked the officer whether it was a man or a woman, and he didnt have details yet. He said theyre still really biz he would the investigating officer. As far as how many shots fired i was also interested in whether this was any kind of a gun battle, was there an exchange of gunfire between multiple vehicles, between both vehicles, and he said he wasnt sure is. As far as we are aware there arent any bystander vehicles that were hit with bullets and damaged. Those havent come forward yet. Thats happened in the past as we know. So far we dont have any reports there. That good samaritan, the officer said that might be a little more involvement than what chp would actually recommend. If you stop and get out of your car, you are not really sure what danger you might be putting yoursism, but for this person, they felt comfortable pulling over and trying to help these people who are bleeding from gunshot wounds. The shooting actually took place right up that hill so its only about 50 yards away. So these people, aussie them get off, are are a little frustrated. Some are very vocal, some are very loud, a few people honking their horns. I would imagine a lot of people relieved after beg stuck on a highway for an awful long time. A lot of folks are asking us. They didnt tune into the radio or check their phone. They want to know what happened. Weve been filling them in a little bit. This all happened a little after 3 30, right in the height of the commute when it was just starting to rev up. On a good day on highway 80, its not all that good. So you throw in two helicopters landing on the freeway and a shooting as you might imagine, its been very difficult. We talked to a few of the drivers and commuters as they got off the freeway and here is what they had to say. Reporter so almost an hour you have been stuck . Yes. Reporter how many exits did you go . The third exit i tried to go, but its jampacked. I just pull out right there. Reporter highway 80 is pretty busy on any given night but you have a shooting investigation going on 20 yards from here. Thats what i heard. Listened to the news. Oh, man, my son was in traffic for over two hours. He just called me. Pretty bad. Reporter weve got a live view of whats transpiring above us as investigators continue to comb the scene looking for shell casings and try to put together exactly what happened around 3 30. There are some alternatives that you can use, but they are a long way away. You have got to take 24. You can get off in orinda and take the dam road, but that might take you awhile because a lot of people are moving on the side streets. New at 6 00, reports of hags by Football Players at Napa High School are now being investigated by the district Attorneys Office. More than a dozen people, including a coach, could face charges. Ktvus Cristina Rendon is live in napa with the latest details on this story. Cristina. Reporter julie, frank, a spokeswoman for the napa Police Department says they interviewed more than 150 people on this case. They have identified 15 alleged offenders and 16 victims. Napa police say what started as an assault investigation grew into a case of hazing with separate incidents dating back to the 20152016 school year. Once the investigators started talking to the witnesses, the offenders and the victims, they determined that it was a span of multiple years but it wasnt solid throughout the year. It was the weeks leading up to the big game. Reporter its a rivalry game between napa and vintage. Investigators have identified 14 alleged offenders and a coach who allegedly failed to meet proper mandated reporting requirements. It hit an unmarked patrol car right in front of police headquarters. Two officers were taken to the hospital with nonlife threatening injuries. There were three people that were detained. The driver, female, approximately 25 years of age. She is being investigated for her so bray team. Reporter officers say smith was stumbling and too intoxicated to stand on his own sew was taken into custody. Officers found a rum bottle and other alcohol inside the suv before it was towed away. New figures show the number of people caught illegally trying to cross the u. S. mexico board hear plunged to its lowest level in five years. Homeland security secretary john kelly says last month Border Control agents stopped almost 19,000 people trying to cross the border. That is down 40 from the previous month. Some immigration experts say its the president s hard line stance against illegal i am gages thats likely behind the drop. Others say it is far that early to assume any trends. Joining us now is political analyst brian sobel. So a 40 drop thats a big number. Huge. Question. Do you think the president s hardline stance has anything to do with this . So it is growing from that perspective. But when the first order was held up by the courts, the Trump Administration went back and recrafted it.
