Arrest. So far im told by police there have been at least four to five. This would make either number five or number six. This gentleman identifies himself as steve hall. A short time ago he was placed in handcuffs and loaded into a Police Vehicle here on alston way in berkeley. It is not clear what he did. Steve smith said all he did was sit and express his right to free speech, because he was arrested. And sew was put into a Police Vehicle and taken away. Its ironic because thats what this whole day has been about. Freedom of speech. Thats what the organize verse this rally in the park trumpeted all day, freedom of speech. This is ground zero in the defense of the constitution in the most important part of it, the first amendment. If you dont have the right to free speech and assembly, you are not free. I dont agree with everything ann coulter wants to say but i think she has a right to say it. I didnt even vote for trump. I voted for the guy in utah. But i think people have a right to speak, and thats why a lot of these guys around me who are veterans put their tails on the line for us so we have a right to speak. Reporter some of those guys are still here at this hour although they are slowly but sure sel leaving. On a side note we have not had any reports of injuries, but five to six arrests so far. Thats what were hearing. Five to six because of the latest one, steve hall taken into custody, and we dont knowy but taken out of here a short time ago. Jesse gary in berkeley. Now to tear tarn berk well the other group of demonstrators. Tara. Reporter thats right. Like we have been mentioning, the crowds have really dwindled. Come on over here. I want to give you a look. Jesse gary is on the other side of the street. Were here on the side of the street with the people would did not agree with the fact that ann coulter was even being considered as someone who would speak at uc berkeley. At this stage, the street is clear. There are no officers in the middle. But there are some officers on the other side of the street, sort of squelching some of these squabbles. I did notice a kkk flag over across the street, and that person obvious hall been answering a lot of questions. Joining me live actually is ali. You are a student at cal . Yes, i am. Reporter what due make of all this especially the fact that ann coulter was invited and a lot of people didnt like that . I think its really unfortunate that her ent had to be canceled. I think most cal students believe that everyone has a right to free speech, and that right cant be restricted based on the content of what you are saying, but my understanding is that the cancellation of her event had more to do with logistics as opposed to an attempt to suppress free speech, because frankly the administration got notice but it couldnt make arrangements. Its just that the administration knew this was such a contentious issue that there was a high chance of protests and they couldnt guarantee the security of the students. Reporter do you feel like if you dont come from a liberal standpoint that you are sort of on the outs . Do you think thats something necessary to survive at uc berkeley or do you seat as a mishmash of all different political views . I think most of the student population is probably more liberal, but most of the colleges tend to have a hey amount of liberals. I think it might have something to do with age or the sort of courses they take, the and so i mean, if you are a liberal, then im definitely sure that its easier to con forms but at the same time i will say there are no restrictions in that i know a couple of people what are conservatives, and i think they feel quite secure. Reporter what do you think about this protest down here . There were a lot of antitrump people down here on this side of the street. The Trump Supporters are on the other side of the street. Theyve sort of been yelling back and forth at each other for the past hour or so. What do you make of all that . Do you think thats a healthy thing . I think its very unfortunate. I also think that the last two events in berkeley that had to be canceled, its unfortunate because then the discussion isnt on the merits of what the person is saying, the discussion just changes to a free speech issue. As you can see i think its impossible to have any meaningful communication of ideas in such an environment because the issue has been lost. I think part of the reason why such, i say french people get so much traction is because of the cancellation because then the discussion is one about how theyre not getting the right to speak, it becomes a free speech issue. So i do think that if you let them speak it is going to be feign. Thank you so much for joining us. We appreciate it. As you can see there are still a couple of skirmishes breaking out. Over here seems like a really big discussion going on with this group, and police, as you can see, Berkeley Police are on the scene. So a lot of shouting i can hear. We did witness three people being taken away. The man that jesse was referring to, a witness told me that he was actually arrested because he had taken off his backpack and challenged somebody to fight so that was the reason why police led him away. That was the guy whose name was steven hall. There have been some other people who have also been arrested, some of them for stepping into the street when police told them not to and they were taken away. But i dont know if they were in fact backed on any charges. Behind me weve got Police Coming through in these motorcades here. Theres some more suvs coming through. So people are still sort of milling around, police as well as fire actually as well. So Debora Villalon is going to take it from here. Live in berkeley, im tara moriarty. So the police were lining there on alston way to keep the two sides apart. Whats to keep the people noun the side of the street that youre on from going onto the other side of the street and confronting the people there . Reporter you know, really nothing, but i think what was sort of going in to minds of police was sometimes having police there does make more tension. I think they felt the numbers were so low at this point that if they left it wouldnt be that bad. So they still do have Police Officers on hand to deal with minor little arguments that seem to be breaking out. Im looking across the street. I can hear somebody yelling. We can seat now. Reporter show the guy with the red helmet. He is yelling at somebody who is gesturing with his articles in front of him in what looks like a camouflage outfit. We talk about free speech. Theyre having it here. At least there is a discussion but obviously what the residents of becialg and what police want is for this to remain peaceful. Tara, im just curious, the gentlemen standing right behind you, holding a big, large black banner, what does it say and how long do they plan to stay out there tonight . Reporter okay, lets go take a look here, julie, without getting run over. This is talking about it says its not about free speech, its about bigots trying to normalize hate. So that is the message obviously that you guys wanted to spread, right . How long do you intend on beg out here . No comment. Any comment over here . No, people are covering their faces. They dont want to talk. But the banner i think says it all, the fact that theyre out here protesting the fact that ann coulter was even considered as a person that would speak ought c berkeley. Im not sure why they wouldnt want to tell us how long theyre going to be out there, but okay. Tara, thank you. Conservative pundit Gavin Mcginniss read coulters actual speech to those gathered at civic center park. American citizen, american immigrants and american millennials feel more thankful at this incredible country that thousands of years of evolution has brought us. Now taking a live look at the situation in berkeley, this is on the side of the street by alston way which has been opened up to traffic, it looks like this group here, there was some tension between the people gathered there, but it looks like it has broken up for now. Police are standing by watching these groups of protesters. We dont have any idea how long people intend to remain on the street but alston way is where police had lined up in the middle of the street as groups from the far right and the far left were on opposite sides of the street. That line of police now has backed off, and that street, alston way has opened up to traffic. Its right next to civic center park. We are of course continuing to monitor the developing situation and we will have the very latest throughout this newscast. Were also posting updates on twitter, facebook, and ktvu. Com. Now to twoing news out of walnut creek where tonight police are actively searching for a gunman who shot and killed a woman near a park. The shooting happened in broad daylight about 1 30 this afternoon. Its the first homicide in walnut creek since last august. The victim was on first avenue right near the front of the lindsay wildLife Experience. Ktvus Cristina Rendon is there with what police are telling us about the king. Cristina. Reporter frank, theres still an active search for this gunman in the entire neighborhood here on the north vend walnut creek. For those familiar with this area theres a shelter in place for all of the residents who live along buena vista avenue between san luis and geary roads. Within the last hour a s. W. A. T. Team has come and left but theres still an active search. Theres a lot of Police Presence about one block down where were told there is a robot in that area. Its unclear what exact thal robot is doing but police are here near san luis and lynnville lane where there was a report that they received about locating a possible suspect vehicle in this area. This is about three streets down from the lindsey whiled Life Experience in marquee park where the woman was shot and killed around 1 30 this afternoon. Police say she was walking down the street when a man shot her multiple times. Police responded. First responders tried to revive her but she did die from her injuries. She was found lying on the street. So this is not at the park and not necessarily at lindsay wildlife but she was on the street right there on the 1900 block of first avenue. That sparked a massive Police Presence. Police are now asking the residents again to shelter in place as well as search their Surveillance Videos or cameras for any video of this possible suspect. Theyre doing all the things they need to do in order to properly investigate. Theyre using as many resources as they can. We do have several officers doing neighborhood canvass right now and following up on leads that do come in. Reporter as we saw earlier there was a helicopter in the air, a chp helicopter assisting in the search as well as s. W. A. T. Teams. Weve been walk around the neighborhood. Weve seen Police Officers in the backyards of homes searching around fences and bushes. Again, there was a report there was a possible suspect vehicle or a possible suspect in this area near lynnville lane and thats why this entire area has been shut down. Its two to three streets down from lindsay wildlife and larky park where the woman was shot on the street. Unfortunately theres no description of the suspect and no description are of the car. So police are asking anyone with Surveillance Video or if they saw or heard something to please give them a call. Cristina rendon in walnut creek, thank you. Ktvus rob roth was there as one of the conductors made his first court appearance. Reporter its one of San Franciscos most popular tourist attractions. Awesome, fantastic. Reporter most passengers bay the 7 cable car ticket on board and pay the conductor in cash. Conductors are required to turn in that money at the end of the day, but Police Say Two conductors were pocketing some of that fare money, they wont say how much or for house, but long enough to anger this San FranciscoMunicipal Transit Agency which operates the cable cars. Last month Albert Williams pleaded not guilty to similar charges. Authorities say they found 32,000 in cash in williams home. They wont say if that money is from cable car fares. It is embarrassing. This is why i think we have to get out of the cash business. Reporter the Transit Agency is considering bog to a cashless system in stead of bag tickets on board perhaps passengers would purchase tickets in advance. What would be required would be things like particular machines in key locations as well as what i call the Distribution Network so someone could go come in and check into their hotel and get a cable car ticket.
