As fox 2s janine de la vega reports, several high schools have shortened their school day over concerns of heatrelated illnesses. Reporter at branham high school, it wasnt hard to find students wearing shorts. Thats one of the ways kids can cope with the temperatures. Some teachers had cold water. Some kids have to go home sick. But its kind its distracting. Its really distracting. A lot of us kind of dread going to school more than normal because of the heat. Reporter one student told us how bad the heat affected a fellow classmate. We were doing laps around the track. And i think he was dehigh crated dehydrated. Thats a big issue. Reporter so what happened . I fainted. Reporter the superintendent at the Campbell Unified School district said all eight high schools are having classes ending at noon. Less than half of the districts classrooms have air conditioning, something parents are not pleased with that. Thats terrible. They should probably leave. It does get hot. You have 30 students in a classroom, and it can get hot. We open within a year or so, that well have air conditioning in all of our classrooms. High priority for us. In the meantime, we should be safe. Reporter the district is canceling most Outdoor Activities and moving them inside such as football practice. Most teams were happen teens were happy to get out of school early. I almost fell asleep twice in history. It was its pretty hard because you are thinking about the heat. You are not thinking about the teachers and what they are saying. So i go home after a hot day and dont know what i learned. In a few hours, the ceremony is about to get underway in san bruno marking five years since a massive gas line explosion killed eight people. Alex savidge has more on the rebuilding efforts and the mayors pledge to hold pg e fully accountable. Reporter san brunos crestmoore neighborhood is still recover, five years out from the explosion that tore a hole in the city, there are more than a dozen properties, either vacant or under construction. Clarences home was spared but he says rebuilding this area helps everyone heal. Im glad to see it mainly because it finishes off the neighborhood. Triggering this massive fire that destroyed 38 homes and left eight people dead. Since that unforgettable day, san bruno mays san brunos mayor has dogged pg e over pipeline safety. Its about a city that lost eight people in a flash that didnt have to happen. Thats what its all about. It could have happened in any of our communities. Reporter pg e was fined 1. 6 billion and is also facing criminal charges for improper recordkeeping and obstructing justice. But days ago, the company filed several motions to have the charges dismissed. A move that angers the mayor. This was not an accident. In my mind, somebody should do jail time. Im very happy and we would be honored to throw away the key. Reporter pg e gave me a statement that says we do not believe that pg e employs intentionally violated the employees violated the act and even where mistakes were made, good faith was made. San bruno continues to rebuild this neighborhood, repaving roads, putting in new sidewalks and a new park is coming. All those improvements wont be completed, though, until 2017. And tonight, the mayor and members of this community will mark the fiveyear anniversary with a remembered ceremony here near the blast site. Oakland police say a man is under arrest in a deadly shooting near the oakland zoo last week. 31yearold Shawn Singleton was taken into custody in the shooting death of 22yearold charles mcelroy. He was killed last thursday morning on bur street. Police say singleton was in possession of two firearms at the time of his arrest. Investigators believe one of the guns may have been used in several other shootings. The personal information of 80,000 California State University students has been compromised after a data breach at eight campuses. The breach affects students who took the Sexual Violence prevention course required by state law. Information including passwords, login names, email addresses, relationship status, and gender were all exposed. Students at sonoma state, san diego, los angeles, cal poly, north ridge, channel islands, san diego and Maritime Academy are all affected by that data breach. If you have ever seen a solo driver cheat their way into the carpool lane, you are not the only one. In fact, some new numbers suggest its happening more and more especially in the south bay. A new survey shows that an average of 41 of solo drivers were driving seen driving in carpool lanes in Santa Clara County this year. Thats nearly double what it was five years ago. Other trouble spots include highway 101 near whipple and redwood city where 30 of solo drivers were caught cheating. And thats up 5 from just three years ago. But bay area drivers say they are seeing this everywhere. I get a little frustrated, you know, i commute with my three girls. Several people have been told to evacuate their homes as well. The rough fire continues to grow, triggering a new round of mandatory evacuations in fresno county. 103,000 acres have burned. Mostly in the Sierra National forest. The fire began over a month ago. According to the u. S. Forest service, its just 31 contained. Wind and rising temperatures are making it hard to figure out where that fire is moving. The hot and dry weather is gonna affect the fire behavior. With that we have some winds that were concerned with. The winds will push fire in directions that we may not want it to go. The fire was sparked by lightning july 31st.
