Supporters say they are upset about a controversial ad they are calling untruthful. Ktvus alex savidge live now with details. Reporter good afternoon to both of you. Several Council Members here in oakland gathered in front of city hall a shot time ago to voice their concerns with this series of ads running on television and mailers that are going out to people here in the city of oakland. These ads are urging voters to say no to a soda tax that will be on the ballot this november. Now, have a look here at one of the tv ads thats drawing criticism. The last thing we need in oakland is a tax on groceries. Reporter this particular ad was put together by the no Oakland Grocery Tax Coalition. The Group Opposes a plan to put a one cent per ounce tax on sodas and other sugary drinks. Today several Council Members who support the proposed soda tax announced they intend to file a complaint with the fcc and also a complaint with the Oakland Ethics Commission about these ads, and also mailers that are going out. Now, they say the ads and the mailers are funded by the American Beverage Association and the Council Members call them deceptive. The fact that the American Beverage Association is willing to put out lies and not even talk about what this tax is despicable, and we want to make sure that the open public has the real truth about what this tax is, that they are educated, and that they understand that this is a tax on sugar sweetened beverages. They should be ashamed of themselves with respect to how they target this community, and particularly communities of color. They have come into our communities historically and told lies about the benefits of their products, and yet they never tell our communities about people who have lost their limbs. People who have compromised lives. People who go blind because of diabetes. Now, the city Council Voted unanimously to place this proposed tax on sugar sweetened beverages on the November Ballot because of Alarming Research showing more than half of californians are suffering from diabetes or prediabetes. Now, i also talked with a representative from the no Oakland Grocery Tax Coalition this morning. He told me this is not a soda tax. He says this is a tax on soda distributors and he says its one that will hurt local businesses. And this is very laughable that we have the proponents of this measure who are calling us disingenuous and misleading when they are the ones promoting this tax on sugar sweetened beverages, but its a tax on distributors of those products. It will affect mom and pop stores that will be hit the hardest by this. Reporter now, the oakland city Council Members are filing two complaints today. One the fcc about the validity of the claims in the tv ads. They are filing a second complaint with the Oakland Ethics Commissions about the mailers which were being passed out in east oakland and west oakland. Its unclear when those Council Members will get a response to those complaints they are filing today, and of course in the meantime those ads will be continuing to run on tv ahead of the elections this november. Send it back to you. Thank you. A grass fire raced through the hills of san jose lighting up the Early Morning sky and now investigators say fireworks could have been the spark of that fire.
