We are going to see another nice day. The clouds along the coastline into the bay this morning, temperatures similar for most. And into the afternoon, i think we will see just a minor change and it will be in the way of a start of a cooldown. For some of us, slightly cooler, and it will be a cooler path as we head into the first half of next week. Ill have your temperatures, coming up. We begin with developing news. The fallout across the country from the acquittal of murder defendant George Zimmerman. We, the jury, find George Zimmerman not guilty. So say we all, foreperson. Well, shortly after the verdict was read, zimmerman smiled and then shook hands with his attorneys, after the jury cleared him of all charges in connection with the shooting death of the florida teenager, Trayvon Martin. The jury, comprised of six women, deliberated for about 15 hours before they acquitted him. The verdict immediately sparked protests nationwide, including here in the bay area. In oakland, some demonstrations actually turned violent and destructive. Alex savidge joins us live from oakland where the store owners are cleaning up. Alex . Reporter well, yes. Quite a bit of cleanup to do here in downtown oakland this morning, following the zimmerman verdict last night. This is a lot of what youll see around the downtown area, a lot of smashed windows and store fronts, businesses that have been vandalized. What youre looking at here is the sears store on telegraph. You can see just how many windows were smashed up last night as the protest moved through this area. Quite a few windows broken during what became a heated demonstration. In one case, some protesters even set fire to a dumpster in the middle of the street last night. Well over 100 people initially gathered outside city hall, then began to march through downtown oakland, following the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin. Police officers were called in to disperse the crowd. They came from several different agencies, including the Sheriffs Office and the chp. Many of the protesters wore masks as they broke store windows, vandalized a bank and spraypainted buildings. Some of the graffiti called for violence against zimmerman. Some called for violence against Police Officers. The Neighborhood Watch volunteer claimed he shot the unarmed teen in selfdefense. Demonstrators last night say the guilty verdict is an injustice. I dont feel like its self defense. No. You killed a little boy. That little boy aint gonna have a chance to do nothing because you felt like it was okay and that you were so big that you couldnt handle him by fighting. You had to shoot him. Like it wasnt that serious. Reporter vandals also targeted the superior courthouse at oak and 12th street. There was spray paint around the building and at least one window of the courthouse was smashed as well. While there was a lot of damage done in the downtown area last night, i just got an update from Oakland Police. Say they during this demonstration last night, there were no injuries. And Oakland Police also say there were no arrests made. But obviously, a lot of cleanup for a lot of the store owners to do this morning. Smashed windows everywhere you look in the downtown area. Trayvon martin last night, protesters marched down valencia street. Organizers say they had been prepared in case of an acquittal and they had made hundreds of picket signs declaring that zimmerman was guilty. Thats why were here, to say that Trayvon Martin deserves justice, not this travesty that happened in florida. San Francisco Police had patrol cars and vans following the demonstrators. Officers say the rally was peaceful. Todays protest is set for 4 00 this afternoon at market and powell. When do want it . Now demonstrators gathered to protest the verdict. As a precaution, the lapd issued a citywide alert. It extended the shift of officers and police did not respond to lowpriority calls. But the demonstration stayed peaceful. New this morning, police are looking for the person who shot and killed a teenager in East San Jose. It happened around 1 00 this morning. Officers responded to a party and found a 17yearold boy inside a car with a single gunshot wound. He was taken to the hospital where police say he later died. Anyone with information about this shooting is asked to call police. All lanes on interstate 580 on oakland have reopened after a shooting shut down the freeway for several hours. Police say a gunman shot into a car and injured one person. The victim was taken to the hospital and is said to be in stable condition. The incident shut down most of the interstate near seminary avenue but the freeway reopened just about three hours later. So far, no arrests have been made. A vallejo woman is facing child endangerment charges after police say she abandoned her oneyearold son in a gas station bathroom. Police released this still photo from a Surveillance Video. They say the video shows the woman pushing a stroller into the bathroom, staying there for nine minutes, and then walking away. 22yearold joia hulkill was arrested after someone recognized her from the still photo. Police say the child was left alone for about one hour but was not hurt. The time now is 7 06. Now to our continuing coverage of the asiana flight 214 crash. The families of the first two teenagers killed in that crash say theyre touched by the outpouring of support. More than 100 people attended a memorial in burlingame just across from sfo. While a Buddhist Organization organized the event, other groups also took part, as a show of solidarity. The parents of ye mengyuan and wang linjia offered their thanks. Due to the loss of their daughters, theyre unable to share with us today, so they had their friend to express this gratitude with us. Organizers of the memorial say they wanted to show the families just how many people in the bay area truly care about them. Now, more information is emerging about the third teenager killed in the crash. The San Mateo County coroner confirms that liu yipeng was 15 years old. Chinese news outlets say all three teens came from the same school in china. The Associated Press reports she was still in her seat when rescuers arrived on scene. Now, sfo is going to hold a blood drive tomorrow to help replenish the blood supply used for the crash victims. The event will run from 9 a. M. To 3 p. M. At the baggage claim area of terminal 3. Walkins are welcome, based on availability. Happening now, there is a strike at Oakland International airport. A group of nonunion fastfood workers are picketing inside and outside the airport. They say they will be joined by union groups. The oneday strike is to raise attention about what they call unfair labor practices by fast food subcontractors. They say workers have been fired up for speaking up. We have not yet received a response from the food vendors. San Francisco Giants pitcher tim lincecum took the hill and threw an absolute gem high in the air and catchable. Its a nohitter for tim lincecum the 29yearold pitched a no hitter against the padres in san diego. Its the first of his career and the 15th nohitter in team history. Lincecum was brilliant, striking out 13, while tossing a careerhigh 148 pitches. Lincecum credits his teammates, from Pablo Sandoval to hunter pence, to keep that nohitter intact. I was pretty much speechless, because like i said, i dont know where to be in my head, just kind of the way things have been going. I just am thankful for the way theyve played.
