We go to alex savidge who is in oakland monitoring the negotiations. It stretched late into the night. Alex . Reporter no one wants to characterize how close the sides are. But there are encouraging signs. Union representatives and bart representatives met for more than 13 hours here at the cal trans building. They left the building at 11 30 last night. The president of the amalgamated Transit Union said proposals were being exchanged and reviewed by both sides. They have keyed in on the major issues of pay, medical benefits and no breakthroughs yet. The leader fort bart said there is no movement and there might be a strike that would lead to gridlock around the area. The deadline is tonight at midnight. They might grow to extending the deadline if they felt they were close to an agreement. We are working hard to get an agreement. We need movement from the district and see what is going on. It would be unfair to speculate at this point. We have no problem working on a day to day basis. As long as we meet and there is a chance of something happening in a positive fashion. We will not shut down the system. We dont do that. Barts lead negotiate are said the two decided to end the bargaining session because it was getting late. One Union Representative decided to stop for the night because bart negotiators wanted to consult management about proposals that were on the table. There is a lot more time spent talking face to face. And both sides admitted as much compared with the previous days here at the bargaining table. Everyone understand that time is running short with the deadline coming up and everyone, bart and the Union Representatives are scheduled to return to the bargaining table at 11 00 in the morning.
