Tell us about the bay bridge crash. Westbound as you get on one of the first San Francisco exits. Harrison and fremont right there. We have a live camera on it. This crash is blocking one of the middle lanes. You can see the traffic is getting around it but they are still trying to put the cars up into a tow truck. One of the cars is one of those really tiny cars that you have seen that you may have noticed. I think they call them smart cars. Its hard to tell what brand it is. The other car is a normal sized car. It doesnt matter because the middle lane has been blocked. Traffic is backed up across the bridge. When we go to the toll plaza, its almost at a standstill. No more room for traffic on the bridge. On the peninsula, northbound 101, theres a crash at sierra on the shoulder but traffic is backing up on nged 101. New this morning a freeway fire blocked traffic on highway 101. The fire started early this morning near sees cesar chavez in San Francisco. Tara moriarty joins us live where she spoke to the fire captain. Reporter an arson investigator was called out to the scene. The fire happened were on the back side where it happened, just through the grove of trees of the freeway is right there. Were next to a park as well where a bunch of Homeless People live. Authorities have already questioned some of them about what they saw around 1 30 this morning. Thats when flames broke out around 101 southbound before the cesar chavez offramp. Two engines responded. Crews were able to snuff out the flames within 15 minutes. Were very close to whats known as hospital curve. Its a very dangerous bend in the roadway. The chp had to shut down the southbound lanes while firefighters got the flames under control. We add foam to get some of the deepseeded fire and some of the chainsaws to break up the wood and the ivy burning deep. Reporter does it ignite pretty quickly . It seemed to take off a lot faster than i thought it would. We got it knocked out pretty good. Reporter the chp was allowing traffic through by 2 30 this morning. The backup lasted for a little while. Meanwhile, the fire under investigation. We heard that authorities detained someone close by on 25th and rhode island. But that person was later released. It started shortly after 3 00 this morning at a home on vegas court. Our news crew was on the scene a short time later. No one was hurt. But the flames damaged the garage. Fire investigators are still looking for the cause. Also new this morning, an elderly woman was transported to a hospital early this morning after a fire inside her san jose home. This is a picture from the Fire Department from the scene on tokey court. They tell us the curtains inside the home caught fire. The woman was woken up by a smoke alarm and had to be treated for smoke inhalation. The exact cause is still under investigation. 7 06. Now were hearing that the navy yard gunman went to a gun shop and shooting range two days before he carried out the assault that killed 12 people. Aaron alexis bought the gun in Northern Virginia on saturday. He also reportedly did some target practice there with an assault rifle. State senator mark leno says california has a database that crossreferences firearm purchases and people with a history of Mental Illness or domestic violence. Reporter dave, caltrain is operating old trains and commuters i spoke to say that its pretty evident one man even told me that his friends used to take caltrain from san jose here to San Francisco for work. But they ended up finding jobs down here in the south bay to avoid using caltrain because delays were getting so bad. Caltrain told the examiner it has an aging fleet and 25 of the locomotive diesel engines are 25 yearsing old. Theres a plan to become electric. But that wont happen until 2019. A caltrain spokeswoman said it doesnt make Financial Sense to upgrade the trains because of that. So commuters are forced to deal with waiting. Stopping in the middle of the night is not good. I had to wait one time coming home in san mateo for two hours because the train broke down. We had to wait for another train to pick us up. The train breaks down, you have to deal with it.
