And we have been looking at the malls, we have been looking at the roads and one of the things that we know is that traffic is lighter than usual, if you are driving in most areas, as a matter of fact it has been a very nice drive across the bay bridge in the morning and no major problems. The morning commute looks okay in
San Francisco. We had an earlier crash on northbound 101 at the 80 split. Thats gone. I want to show you the mall here or i want to show you the malls in a moment. One of the things i want to mention, chp is investigating a fatal crash on east bay freeway that happened around 12 30 this morning on interstate 80 in richmond. A driver crashed into the
Center Divide, then got out of his car, he tried to leave the crash and walk across the freeway and thats when another car a hit and killed him. The chp says that driver stopped immediately and is cooperating with investigators. They do not believe alcohol is a factor in the crash, and one of the things i want to mention is the malls, this mall here in the emeryville area, were seeing traffic thats a little bit slow here on 580, but its not actually as much as we thought it would be. I want to show you, just one more thing. In the walnut creek area, downtown walnut creek not really a mall but a shopping area, but you can see that southbound 680 is actually doing pretty well and so is northbound 680. Driving to the shop areas is not so much as problem, but when you get there, thereto a lot of there are a lot of people shopping. Police are on the scene of a demonstration at the port of oakland. Hundreds of them say will be forced out of business because they cant afford the additional cost. Supporters of the new rule say the drivers were given plenty of advanced warning. Your time is 8 02. The

Tara Moriarty, youre looking at the crowds in emeryville, but first lets go to janine de la vega at the great mall in melodias. Whats it like out there. Reporter theres no too much foot traffic. It was probably crowded earlier. It comes in ebbs and throws, not wall to flows. Not wall to wall people here at all. When the doors opened at 8, we are told there were thousands of people here and they were packed. Its predicted that shoppers will spend more. There are a lot of sales happening here, offering 50, 60 and 70 off of items. People want to take advantage of that. Economists are predicting bay area merchants will do much better, the reason, the robust local economy. Outside the bay area, analysts say consumers may be looking for essential items to buy for the holidays. Theres a growing number of wealthy consumers in the bay area thanks to an improving housing market. The
Unemployment Rate is lower than the national average. We asked shoppers this morning if theyll be spending more or less this
Holiday Season. It was actually less. I have all the deals. Theyre doing like 60 off everything. I have only spent like maybe 50. What we spent last year, we typically end up spending, you know, roughly around a thousand per person. Mall management says shoppers who have more of a disposable income still want value and are looking for deals. Theyre going to be studying the sales trends. Theyre predicting a good season. Now, there is plenty of time to do more shopping here at the great mall, and it might be a good time to come right now, back out here to a live picture. Again, it looks kind of empty, at least where were standing. As i mentioned, they come and go. If youre sort of hanging on the fence, do i want to come out, its actually probably best to come now rather than later, you know, when the crowds might pick up in the afternoon. Reporting live, from milpitas, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. Black friday is the busiest shopping day of the year, but there may be less of a frenzy today as we heard just mentioned. We want to check with
Tara Moriarty live in emeryville, and youre seeing a little bit of a lull there as well. Yeah, a little anticlimactic here. Were not seeing crowds folks saw last year. Were at the target, and apparently last night they were swamped from about 8 00 until 1 30 in the morning. They do expect things to pick up again at 11, but many of the door buster deals were offered last night at stores. At 5 this morning, the doors to home depot opened. That was one of the few stores that didnt open yesterday on thanksgiving. Customers told us they were anxious to snatch up holiday wreaths and appliances where were the big ticket items. Toys r us was open until 5 last night. Shoppers told us the door buster deals were gone. They could find the regular sale items. One man loaded his fan as a rule of toys. He has shopping this year has been easier compared to last year. Last year it was crazy.
