This is the scene of an accident involving a police car and another vehicle. You see those two cars right there at the center of your screen with some serious damage involved. Some of our coldest temperatures of the morning Still Holding on. We have 20s and 30s with that freeze warning until 9 00 for the entire bay area with the exception of San Francisco. Low 20, fairfield, napa, 29 walnut creek, 29 in livermore. Mid to upper 30s at the bay to about 40 in San Francisco. Half moon bay, 32. Received a tweet from pacifica, 33 there. And the heat is on as we get into the north bay, widespread 20s, hillsborough, calistoga, petaluma. You know the drill. Bring along the winter coat, dress the little ones, bundle them up. We have another cool day in store. And then big changes coming our way. This system will bring us rain tonight and by tomorrow, snow to the local hills, definitely a possibility. Well have a live report from almaden, the reporter is on the sceent. Other things are going on, including an earlier crash at the bay bridge toll plaza, westbound. It was there in one of the lanes. They had the paramedics show up. Its not causing a huge delay. Theres already a delay at the toll plaza. Its not as bad as it would be on a wednesday. The traffic is moving along nicely. If you are driving in san jose, 101 is slow. 7 03. Back to the desk. We begin with breaking news from san jose. Its where a San Jose Police car has been involved in a serious crash. And officers have shut down the busy intersection of almaden boulevard and west san carlos street. Janine de la vega arrived on the scene just a few minutes ago. She joins us live. Janine, what have you learned . Reporter police are not tell are now telling us this intersection will be closed for an hour or two while they investigate. You can see that a police car has been involved in a crash, the northbound lanes of alma done are closed. The eastbound lanes of san carlos are closed for about a block area. What were learning here is that at about 5 45, the police car was stopped and almaden at san carlos, when another car, a cadillac, was traveling at a high rate of speed and then crashed into the back of that police car. At some point, were hearing that the driver of that car tried to get away and it was a Security Guard who was working nearby in this downtown area that was able to catch him, apprehend him and wait until other officers arrived. I asked a Police Sergeant why wasnt the actual driver of the police car that got hit able to do that and she said,ing you know, he must she said, you know, he must have been in knock. Were unsure how bad his injuries are. He and the other driver were taken to the hospital. They are being treated for injuries. Nonlifethreatening. A little more information about the officer. Were told hes a 13year veteran with the department. The driver, were not sure why he was trying to get away from police. I asked if it was a stolen car. They didnt think so. The spokeswoman for the Police Department wasnt able to tell me that. But she wasnt sure. Well definitely follow up on that. They are still investigating this and they are unsure if alcohol is gonna play a factor in the crash. Were live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. All right. Thank you. Happening now thousands of people are in the dark and in the cold in benicia because of a major power outage. Ktvus Claudine Wong joins us live to tell us when some people could get the power back and the possible cause for the outage. Claudine . Reporter good morning. We got an update from pg e a couple of minutes ago, telling us all about 2300 folks have been restored. That means they have their power back on. This outage affected more than 4100 people including all of the folks here at the South Hampton shopping center. And this is huckleberrys a restaurant. These are the regulars who come here every day for coffee. Danielle, you usually open up for them. How long have you been waiting in this parking lot to see if you can open up . About 6 25. A little more than half an hour. Reporter this update i got from pg e says maybe not until noon. What does that mean . We probably wont be opening until noon or 1 00. It was a watery mess overnight in mrsz after a water main break sent water rushing through a neighborhood. Take a look at that. It all happened at 9 30 on martinez avenue near pacheco boulevard. Crews say the cold weather and shifting ground caused the break. The water went into the garage of one home and rushed through two businesses. At one point disrupted business to 50 homes. Service was restored for about two hours. It took all night to make the repairs. This is new video that we shot before 3 30 as crews were making the scene and patching the street. The chp says the driver, 24 yearold john holly, was going too fast and could not make the turn. He crossed the other lanes of traffic, hit a tree and took off running. The chp says this girlfriend was left his girlfriend was left trapped in the car and was taken to the hospital and treated for her injuries. Dianne feinstein is pushing to keep a deadline for installing new technology on trains that she says would prevent crashes like the one in new york over the weekend that killed four people. Senator feinstein introduced legislation back in 2008 that requires all trains to have whats called positive train control installed by december 31st, 2015. The technology automatically slows down or stops trains if engineers exexceed spi. Nelson mandela has always said the movement by uc Berkeley Students back in 1986 calling on the University System to divest 2. 5 million from the government was a crucial step in ending apartheid. Nancy skinner, recalls the visit mandela paid to the bay area shortly after being released from prison in 1990. He came back to the east bay, to the Oakland Coliseum to thank the hundreds, thousands of people that had been there, americans in solidarity with south africa trying to get that regime done. The company made the announcement last night. It comes after an order by the fda last month. The kits launched more than five years ago and claimed to tell customers if they are at risk of more than 250 diseases. Customers who bought the kits since the fda order came out last month they will now be eligible for refunds. A new study says eating healthy might actually be cheaper than you think. Its a little bit heavier than normal for a friday. 20minute delay. No problems. No problems on 24 getting through the caldecott tunnel. We still have the Police Activity here at the corner of almaden and san carlos. Its a good area to avoid. You might want to think about using other routes.
